Yeah as a Tottenham fan my honest expectation is that Swansea have a realistic shot at being ahead of us at the end of this season due to a lack of meaningful signings, despite having Eriksen and Kane (who I feel very confident saying are fantastic pieces to build a team around).

It's particularly the shits when UEFA tried to rein in the big spenders with Financial Fair Play and then decided to castrate their own regulation because of pressure (legal and political) from the big clubs. If that had been successful, I could've seen one day moving towards a more formal salary cap but now that UEFA's backed off, no fucking chance. And it's not like salary caps aren't without their own fault. I think the NBA has it best, as they allow teams to keep players they develop with exceptions. Can you imagine where the Blackhawks would be if they had those exceptions to work with?

I'm thinking all three of the players mentioned would not be looking at "small" pay cuts if they left Liverpool.

They are showing their true colors and signaling that they also (consciously or subconsciously) agree they aren't worth what they are getting paid, and are highlighting their loser mentality.  Real winners have a hunger and drive to be the best, no matter what.  They would take a pay cut to go elsewhere and prove the naysayers wrong and EARN that same salary again (or more) somewhere else.  It's like Oyaji said, it's like they understand their careers are on a downward spiral, but instead of fighting to improve their situation and be the best they can be, they are just gonna take the money now and run (or sit tight).  This is chess not checkers, and any good manager will avoid putting losers like Balotelli in their teams in the future.

Loser mentality? These guys signed contracts, and expect the team that signed them to honour those contracts. It's not like they aren't at the training ground every day, working to try and get in the lineup. Taking a massive paycut to possibly make that money back in the future is a massive risk.

Indeed, but no risk no reward.  This is like winning the lottery and choosing to get a lump sum now, or get 25% more over 10 years or whatever.  SO maybe he gets a pay cut from $4mil a year to 2mil a year for a couple years, and then in 2 years he's back to 4mil +.  But if he chooses to warm the bench for 2 seasons, maybe he never again has the potential to make $4mil a year and stagnates and wastes his earning potential.  He's already rich anyway with 35mil+ net worth, how will a few more mil here and there really change his lifestyle?  He will lose endorsement deals and respect and waste his talent by staying though, and that will ultimately affect him more for years to come than he realizes.  He's being a short-sighted loser.

I'm just glad the contract is up in 2017 and not one of those stupid 6 year deals (Kovacic). There were a bunch of clauses and provisions in terms of behaviour too.

I can see both sides of the argument. As a fan, I'd of course like the player to have a hunger to play competitive games but he has every right to chill and get his moneys for the next two years.

I love how the guy who cheers for the team that got caught paying off refs is talking about who is a loser and who has the "right mentality".

I'm sure if Liverpool offered to pay some salary, they could offload all three of the players in question.

If being short-sighted means having your sight set on a big bean-bag chair filled with doritos, cocaine, Xbox controllers and Super model booty now rather than later then pencil me in for short-sighted.

I haven't been able to conjure up hate for Balotelli since that Man City victory parade where he could bring a member of his family to share the experience, so he brought his dog.

Damn, forgot my Champions League review for today:

Didn't watch the Lazio match, because I can't stand them or their neo-nazi fans. FUCK that team.

Watched the United match. Was nice of them to score on themselves early to bring some drama, but they were in charge most of the way.

Not really a big pasta guy...

But okay, fine.

The notion that he owes your club some financial relief because he didn't succeed for them is a laugh, and please stop going on about endorsement deals and market value like you give the tiniest of shits about his future earnings, it's ridiculous.

That you're doing so AFTER Balotelli took a big pay cut to come to your side in the first place is just sad.

So how 'bout that Memphis?

Huh. I could have sworn he said something about Liverpool being his favorite English club. Well, my mistake I guess. I apologize for slandering your good name, SGB. You're still wrong, though.

So, according to Igli Tare (sp?) the Nazio Fans didn't say "Buh", which in his view is racist (how?) but "Uh Uh Uh", which is only to scare the other teams players.

Yeah, I also make ape sounds, when I want to scare someone...

I don't really have an EPL team I support, but I liked Pool a lot when they had Suarez, and last cpl years I rooted for them as they had some good runs as underdogs.  But I like to watch all the big English teams really, just don't have a particular favorite in that league.

I'm more disappointed by Balotelli ruining his chances to ever get back into the Italian national team after his great performances in the last Euros and being such a bright hope for the future etc.  If he sits out for 2 years without a promising loan, his career is effectively DONE.  Even though that's what he really needs, he needs to go back to a smaller club where he can feature regularly and be the star player the team is built around, and gain his form and confidence back.  I don't care about how much money he makes per se, but I do care about him as an Italian and that his future potential is being wasted and him never reaching that level many people wanted him to for his country.  And I think that goes hand in hand with making money, and i'm surprised he doesn't have a better agent telling him the same things.  But this sort of activity from him really makes it clear he's playing for the love of money, not the love of the game anymore, and not many managers are going to want to take a chance on him again because he's become such a liability with that attitude.

That last second goal was a killer for Celtic. Hoops won 3-2 but now have to go to Sweeden and can be knocked out on a 1-0 or 2-1 loss.

Also United supporters need to use the song "Walking in Memphis" somehow.

Any time (in pretty much any sport) you have a player with the 'talented but difficult' tag, you'll be able to find a manager or coach who thinks they're the one to make a team player of him. And there are more than a few who basically specialise in doing that. So I wouldn't write Balotelli off entirely yet. I'd just mostly write him off, mostly.

Today's back pages were mostly going with the 'All The Way From Memphis' puns today. But if he keeps his form up, there's plenty of other songs that mention his namesake city.

Celtic are quite a fun club to watch even if it's a bit of a heart attack. 3-2 lead on Malmo, going back to Sweden. Anything is possible, but two away goals against is tough with those current rules.

Was Crew Stadium built on an Indian burial ground or something? Also Poku is city's best player. Every time I've seen him this year he's always a goal threat.
