2024 VIDEO GAMES CATCH ALL THREAD

Recommended Posts

I never finished Disco Elysium, but all I remember is that my character ended up as a fascist early on in the game, and I was pretty bummed about that.

I don't find DE to be as depressing or as thinky as people claim, but I suppose that's because a lot of its questions and existential dread are just "Tuesday" for me.  But it's good.  Really goddamn sick of the music you hear coming out of the hostel, though.

Also really fucking sucks that Cyan decided to remake Riven after all this time, but for whatever reason, they couldn't remake a 25+ year old game that could run on my current computer.  But somehow BG3 will.

There is the DS port, Ultimate Mortal Kombat, it isn't exactly the same as the arcade game but is near arcade perfect. The game is slighty faster and the ai is slightly harder too. Gameplay is bit different in some ways. Has the usual omissions and additions.

Certainly is the best handheld port of UMK3.

Balatro is amazing.

If you had told me that someone could make a deck-building roguelite that I would even be able to tolerate, much less that I would love, I would have laughed at you. Alas, there is at least one game in every genre, subgenre, and genre-mashup that I will like. I just need to be alive long enough to play it. I'm glad that I lived long enough to play Balatro.

I think my only minor complaint is that some of the conditions on the jokers don't make immediate intuitive sense. I've had to look up what a few jokers do, and I've totally misinterpreted some of the cards after reading an explanation.

I got stuck on the black deck for quite a few runs before finally getting the right stew of multipliers (and buying an extra hand) to clear it.

I keep hearing people talk about it, and I feel like it's the perfect thing for the Switch I don't play enough, but I've yet to pull the trigger on the $15.

In the world of GOG sneaking shit out...

The original PC port of the OG Resident Evil has been slyly released on GOG, optimized to run on modern systems AND with XInput support, so no fucking around with fan patches and other stuff to get it to work with a control.  GOG is selling a 3 pack with all 3 PC Ports of the Original Racoon City Trilogy, with 2 and 3 coming out later.  I'm guessing it'll be the US Windows ports and not the Japan Sourcenext ports, but it'll still work.  The PC ports were graphically better than the PSX versions anyway, but it'll be nice to play the originals without having to run a bunch of fan patches.

I got it on PS5, and I regret it; this is a perfect portable game. I'll probably wish list it and wait for a sale on Switch, then buy it again for when I'm traveling.

I, personally, find it basically unplayable in portable mode but my visual impairment is well documented here. I haven't gotten very far since "portsble" is the way I'd most like to play it, but on a TV it's much more legible and I like it a lot.

That is a fair point. The text explaining what the different cards do is very small. I'm surprised that they apparently don't have a text re-sizing option. I hope they patch one in.

Dino Rex  1992 Arcade fighting game by Taito

https://youtu.be/TzoK9LFiMHI?si=OHu4G2CCDFndUqYh

Stop motion animation using models were used and digitized sprites before Primal Rage was even a thing.

There are emulated arcade ports available for the PS2 and Switch in their respective Taito collections. Also available for the PS4.

The game was available in JP and Europe when it came out in the 90's. Planned American version was aborted.

I noticed the last couple days that playing TTYD on Switch, I keep missing ledges and needing multiple tries to enter pipes,so that game doesn’t agree with my depth perception.

I'm near sighted in one eye and far sighted in the other eye. Depth perception isn't my friend. Also, my late 30s is where my eyesight is starting to wane more than it has. I need to go to the eye doctor and get new glasses, but when does one have the spare $4-500?

Not that you asked for advice, but if you've got a Costco near you you can get an eye exam with no insurance for like $125 and you can get decent glasses off Zenni for under $50.  Still expensive, but not quite as painful.

I've also got shit depth perception so anything that tries to trick my binocular vision like 3D or VR is a no go for me.

The unreleased game Pit-Fighter II was planned for the Sega Genesis and the Sega CD. Would had contained characters from the beat 'em up Guardians of the Hood. Sterling Silver Software who developed the Genesis port of Pit-Fighter, also developed the canceled sequel, TENGEN was set to publish the game in 1993.

i hope the game gets obtained and leaked and dumped for play someday.

I caved and got Balatro on my Switch last night. I'm sure I'll toy with it tonight since I was a bit distracted by the US's Copa game last night. I also have been troubleshooting my turntable to frustrating results.

Any Stellaris enjoyers? Mostly all I've done with it is build custom alien races lol one day I need to actually dig deep in.

I try to avoid the game because it absolutely sucks all my time into a blackhole. But I actually got through the end game. Sadly my federation became subservient to another culture. I was hoping I could low key weaken them behind their backs, to the point I could get my freedom back, but it never happened.
