2024 VIDEO GAMES CATCH ALL THREAD

Recommended Posts

PS Portal update: very nice looking little device, feels good in the hands, sceen looks good. We've got decent Internet because the wife works from home. 400-500mbps wired, 200-300 wireless with Eero mesh networking. PS5 is NOT currently hard wired (basement) but had less of an issue streaming to the Portal than I normally do using the wired PS4 in the living room (main level). Pretty stoked so far, played some Dredge with only a wee bit of lag during fishing mini games and general boat steering.

No regrets thus far.

I saw a video on this. A retro version of a Ultima like game but Lovecraftian.

Tempting depending on the price.

The folks in my Ultima Facebook group are loving this game.

TLDR: the founders of Rocksteady didn’t want to make another superhero game, WB asked them to, they were super unprofessional and didn’t give clear direction to employees and new hires, came up with terrible ideas (some implemented, some scraped) and eventually left the studio before the game was released - probably in an attempt to salvage their reputation and let the Arkham fanboys online defend them because no one at the time knew the real story.

Also, fucking LOL at taking inspiration from Endgame and Infinity War for a DC game. You literally had two Suicide Squad movies to pull from, one especially better than the other. What the fuck?

They made a superhero game where like all you do is shoot guns. What the fuck did they think people were gonna think

For what it’s worth, people working on the game were confused by it - with the example of Captain Boomerang being used. Melee was going to be a bigger mechanic, but “the founders’ vision kept changing” for the game. One of them wanted to implement vehicles, and the dev team was confused by this too, since each character already had mobility mechanics. But they spent MONTHS making this and testing it, only for it to be scrapped.

One of the things that stuck out about it to me watching footage was how basically the entire game takes place on rooftops. It's like an exec saw the dope Spider Man games and just said "hey do that" but they forgot they don't actually have, you know, Spider-Man, so it doesn't make sense.

I really feel like an underrated part of why it flopped is that the end of the Arkham timeline is now Batman and the rest of the Justice League becoming brainwashed mass murderers who have to die for the good of humanity. The first Injustice ends with Our Superman beating the shit out of Dictator Superman. That works. "Hunt down and execute the specific version of Batman you played as in four games you may have loved" is a fucking insane choice.

Wow, that's shitty.  But from my handful of years in that industry, it definitely tracks with the personalities of "games industry professionals."

Hey, Dark and Darker is back on steam. It still fucking sucks, and now it's even more pay to win than ever, but don't worry all the same people that shilled for it in 2023 are back on board baby!

They should have renamed it to Shit and Shittier.

PS Portal update: after experiencing some stuttering while playing, I tried a trick I saw many people mention - unplugging the HDMI from my PS5 when not using it. I've got nearly flawless streaming to my Portal now. My wife is happy to have me gaming in the same room with the fam.

In summation, the whole "perfect for parents/partners who have to share the living room television" is 100% true.

$600 high-end heavy-duty dance mat comes in the mail and the bar that comes with it is missing a bracket. I have to e-mail the King of Poland about it tomorrow or something.

Outside of that, I'm doing time machine gaming. Ratchet & Clank 2? Really good! Baldur's Gate 1? Great! Drakengard? The biggest gap between bad gameplay and great story on the entire PS2. It's like all the things I've been told for 20 years are completely true.

The Double Dragon Collection for Switch includes the NES ports of 1,2,3, and the SNES game, Double Dragon Advance and 4.  None of those uggo 3d games included.

In Capcom news, SNK characters Terry Bogard and Mai for SF6. But I haven't really liked SF art direction since 4, so eh. Capcom Vs SNK crossover might be possible again.

Sixty hours later, I have the 100% completion badge in TTYD.

I've got it behind SMRPG and in front of Paper Mario 64, but I admit that I will always place SMRPG first because I irrationally love it.

SMRPG remake sold over 3M copies, and TTYD remake seems to be on pace with that, so maybe someone at Nintendo will decide to make another Eastern RPG with Mario in it, preferably with these unique Goomba, Koopa, etc., characters. Goombella is a prize.

Can we skip remaking Sticker Star and go right to Color Splash?

Sticker Star was not good, but I liked it more than The Origami King.

I think I'm just not interested in Paper Mario games that aren't RPGs. Maybe I would be willing to play Super Paper Mario to see how I like it again again, even though it's more of a platformer with light RPG elements, but after that, Paper Mario might as well not exist for me.

Stepmania, thee major dancing game clone for PC (DDR, PIU, ITG, etc). It's been around for maybe 20 years and has always had a pretty big community around it. I used to play a ton of DDR in high school and I've reached an age where I needed to buy exercise equipment that I'd actually use. So I downloaded every offical DDR song ever released (rather easily) and the pad itself works like a dream. Playing proper with shoes and it hasn't dropped a note, although my schlubby ass hasn't done anything harder than a old-8 new-11 footer.
