Learning that it was another game entirely with the Mario cast plonked into it made a lot of sense because at that point in time, 2D Mario games didn't stink, and this game stunk bad. It still does. At least it gave us Birdo, Mouser, Wart, and playable Peach and Toad! And I guess it gave us the trope that Luigi can jump farther, but is a bit harder to control, which really became fun in the 3D games (clearing Galaxy with Luigi is the most fun that that game ever gets). But otherwise, what a stinkfest. (...) The Luigi having longer jumps while being sluggish to control started with Lost Levels (which came on the market two years before SMB2 in the US did).

Granted, in the same boat over here.

But otherwise, what a stinkfest. Super Mario 2 was the first game I ever loved as a kid. I have a complete in box copy displayed in my house. I was given the first issue of Nintendo Power when I was little and remember poring over it, because I desperately wanted a NES and my family couldn't get me one, so I lived vicariously through that issue until we could get one. When we did, obviously it came with Super Mario 1 and Duck Hunt, but I had already played those as a friend's. I ripped open Super Mario 2 first and dove right in, and never looked back. Games with timers stress me out, and I had the feeling like I could actually explore and have fun. Also, it let me play as Peach, and that's all I wanted in a game until I heard rumors that Samus wasn't a boy in Metroid, and then I wanted to play that too. The whole reason I fell in love with games, though, was Super Mario 2.

DragonZombie
I remember the PS1 port of DOOM having coloured sectors and animated burning skies and other graphical differences and exclusive foreboding music. And the game can have DOOM 2 enemies in the Ultimate DOOM levels on the Ultra Violence mode. The exclusive Nightmare Spectre enemy and several other differences that are too numerous to post about. Most DOOM ports for consoles from the 90s to the portable 2001 GBA DOOM port reused the Jaguar port maps. But the PS1 port had 7 exclusive maps. DragonZombie
There's Voxel DOOM, which replaces the old digitized sprites with 3D Voxel models. And there is raytraced DOOM which people combine with Voxel DOOM sometimes. Looks pretty.
twiztor
i love SMB2 (USA). as a kid, it absolutely felt like a Mario game, albeit a different one. But it was a different time, and a lot of the NES sequels didn't follow the lineage of their predecessor (Zelda 2, Castlevania 2). I never understood the 'picking' mechanic, but accepted it as the next iteration. I didn't learn until a few years later that it was originally released as a different game. I actually wish we'd see more of the SMB2 cast of villains show up in the mainline series entries. HOW HAS TRICLYDE NOT MADE A COMEBACK? I could take or leave Clawgrip, but Mouser, Fryguy, and Wart should all have recurring appearances. SMB2 (JPN) is a whole different story. I've had a repro NES cart of it for years and years, but finally made it my mission to complete last year. WHAT A CHALLENGE. the original Japanese release is quite a bit tougher than the Lost Levels SNES version. And yes, while the USA version is what made me a Luigi fan, this is where his jumping mechanics (my uncle always called him "Crazy Legs Luigi"...a tradition i continue) began. SMB3 > World. there, i said it. Kid Icarus. man, that NES game is hot garbage. The GB sequel is a marginal improvement, but still pretty subpar. and the 3DS game is the epitome of "fine". NES Metroid is perfection. Yes, i played through the whole game without a walkthrough. Yes, i have hand-drawn maps. No, i wouldn't have it any other way. While the Super Metroid definitely holds up better, i will take the OG any day of the week. Like Stef with her SMB2, i have a CIB copy of Metroid on my gaming shelf (alongside Zelda 1 & 2).
SirSmUgly
I accept that I'm in the minority on SMB2 (USA) in general. I'm glad people like that game because oh man, it is not for me. Stefanie Sparkleface
Super Mario Wonder melted my brain immediately in World One when I got to the piranha plants. I don't want to spoil what happens if you haven't played it yet because it was genuinely delightful for me.
Craig H
My only issue with Wonder is that it’s really short for how much it costs. Beautiful game though that really pushes how wild the Mario universe can be.
SirSmUgly
I don't mind paying sixty bucks for twenty-five or so hours of high-quality gameplay with incredible (IMO) art direction. Besides, I think I got to thirty hours of gameplay in my original playthrough because I spent five hours trying to get through the last half of the final post-game world. The only complaint I had about the game is that they added Peach and Daisy, but not Rosalina. I wanted to play as Rosalina half the time and Luigi the other half, dang it! EDIT: Oh yeah, regarding Wart showing back up in a Mario game, I am still waiting for my villain team-up mainline Mario game in which Wart, Tatanga, and Fawful kidnap Bowser because he keeps failing to defeat Mario, and Bowser Jr. comes to Mario again for help in freeing his dad. Nintendo's ethos has pretty much always been that you CAN complete a game quickly if you want, but there is plenty available to you if you want to mess around and explore, anyway. I always feel like they respect my time and focus on making things as fun as possible, while also giving me the option to explore and goof around if I want to. Their games tend to have a ton of replay value that way.

I thought the remake was a fantastic experience. I don't think I could put TTYD over SMRPG just because SMRPG hits differently for me from a nostalgic point of view, but TTYD's not far behind for me. I'm a huge Geno fan, but I'd put Goombella and Vivian on that level as well. I love Paper Mario 64, too, but other than Lady Bow being pretty cool, I don't think the partner characters were nearly as good as in TTYD. I like Bobbery and Kid Yoshi a lot, too. I know that Nintendo put PM64 on the N64 NSO app a couple years ago, so that wasn't a priority for a remake, but I hope Intelligent Systems does a full remake for that game three or four years down the road, too. It'll offset the next new Paper Mario game that I won't like and have learned by now not to even bother with unless it goes back to the PM/TTYD roots of the series. Craig H
Oh my god. I know I'm late to the party, but I started playing Vampire Survivors. Someone please send help. I'm addicted to the point where I'm going to be like Howard Hughes in a dark room full of jars I've pissed into because I won't pull myself away from a badass run. Last night I thought I was hot shit. I played a few times on the first level and unlocked a bunch of, uh, unlockables, and then played the second level where I hit level 61 or higher in a 25 minute long run. I could have gone longer, but I fucked around and found out. I thought I was unstoppable and decided to plow into a huge hoard and I think I moved too fast and wound up taking on too much damage. But I'm only a couple thousand away from getting the extra life unlockable, so I got that going for me, which is nice. Death From Above
Vampire Survivors is one of those games where almost every time you swear this has to be the last thing you unlock it turns out there's another layer. Fucking crazy game and I think it's the only game I've actually paid for on my phone (and it might be the only game I ever have more phone progress than my PC save).
