Curt McGirt
Ed Wood is the only one I really come back to. I think I slept through Sleepy but caught it later in life and yeah, I can see why the parents complained, it was pretty dark. I liked it well enough but Christina losing the weight was a disappointment... though I've always got Buffalo '66 for that. God, by the time Black Snake Moan came out she was a cadaver. Ed Wood is one of the best films of the 90's, for some reason it's never on the streaming services! Sleepy Hollow is really good, I think a lot of people avoid it due to it being another Burton-Depp flick. Even though it's a mess I really like Dark Shadows. Curt McGirt
Speaking of Depp I caught the end of From Hell again recently. Just brutal. I can't think of many period pieces as bloody as that, unless we're talking Caligula or Titus or something. (Also, Titus is my favorite Shakespeare adaptation next to the Russian Macbeth cartoon.) I like Titus a lot, but the Richard III set in the 20s with tanks and fascists and stuff whips all kinds of ass.
Curt McGirt
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_III_(1995_film) Oh man, I really need to see that. The cast alone looks worth it.
odessasteps
The McKellan one? Very good, id also champion the 1948 Welles version of the Scottish play, made by Republic on a shoe string budget on a spate Western set.
Curt McGirt
Forgot to mention that I caught most of Julius Caesar with Marlon Brando on TCM last week. I came in right as the conspirators were starting to talk behind Caesar's back and it struck me how... conversational? the conversation they had was. Through the language there was such a level of snark. I don't remember it reading like that; I suppose you have to see it acted out.
odessasteps
I wish we had film not just still of some of the stuff Welles did in the 30s, like Voodoo [Scottish Play] and gangster Julius Caesar.

Keeton set an impossible standard to playing Dogberry from here on out with this. It was also fun to wach Keanu *way* the fuck out of his depth doing Shakespeare (at the time, he might be able to pull it off now)

He might have a great King Lear inside of him.
elizium
In January 1995 Keanu Reeves, in the first thing he did post-Speed, came to Winnipeg and performed Hamlet for a month. The City lost it's mind while he was here. It wasn't a touring production either, it was only performed in Winnipeg http://www.canadianshakespeares.ca/essays/reeves.cfm https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/multimedia/fp-slideshow/Keanu-Reeves-as-MTCs-Hamlet-1995-288070511.html Edited April 29, 2021 by elizium
