Dolfan in NYC Posted October 8 Posted October 8 No more timing... Each tear that falls from my eyes... WHOOPS, there's a show tonight! And on the same week as a PPV! (I haven't read the details, but are they still going to be PPV's when the new TV deal happens? Wait, scratch that question. I don't really care.)  I`m not hiding the remedy.... To cure this old heart of mine Wheeler Yuta has a BIG match to show where his TRUE loyalties are.  There's certainly no way that a professional wrestler who has professed his disdain for his opponents and former friends would EVER betray the person he's teaming with!  I can dream about you! If I can't hold you tonight.... I can dream about you! You know how to hold me just right.... All that and MORE tonight on TITLE TUESDAY~! Only one thing to do... (Always fun to see gay singers in the 80's singing their love songs to a woman with whom they zero chemistry.) Enjoy the week!   6
The Natural Posted October 8 Posted October 8 (edited) Bryan Danielson is going to get the condition known as Stupid Sting Syndrome. Edited October 8 by The Natural 3

It would be cool if he anticipated the Wheeler turn and outsmarts them but that isn't going to happen because this version of Bryan Danielson is d.u.m.b DUMB. And that is why evil will always triumph.....because good is dumb. 3
Matt D Posted October 8 Posted October 8 Glad to see Emi back. She's got such a string of good matches with everyone in AEW. I can't believe this won't be good. I guess Britt is supposed to be a babyface coming in vs Willow but yeesh. I assume that ends in a three way? I have high hopes that the tag will be fun one way or the other. Komander vs Hologram should be spectacular. Looks like a good show overall. 1
AxB Posted October 8 Posted October 8 If you're going to try and make the Wrestling unpredictable, when there's a number one contender's match the week of the PPV, that should end by anything other than the Champion running and and forcing the DQ/No Contest, then celebrating that they've avoided having to defend the belt... only for the babyface authority figure to announce that now both contenders will be challenging, in a three-way title match! The champ can lose the belt without being involved in the decision, oh my, how unprecedented. Willow should just, like, win. 5
Technico Support Posted October 8 Posted October 8 (edited) Yeah, Britt losing to Mercedes, beating Serena, and then getting put right into a #1 contender's match is insane. Can we find a happy medium between ratings and and TK just pulling contenders out of his ass? I don't know why we have eliminators, tournaments, various battle royal types, etc. when apparently a top wrestler who is 1-1 can say "I want the next shot," another top wrestler who is 2-2 in her last four matches can say "nuh uh," and then they're the top two contenders. We don't need to religiously stick to ratings and won/loss records but fuck, at least build people up a little. This is something TK does a lot. For example, they needed someone to job to Mariah May on a Dynamite defense, so they had Nyla Rose, who was barely on TV, beat jobbers on back to back Rampages to "earn" the shot. Yes, you too can have a shot at the champion of the world if you just beat two wimpies on the C show. This isn't "heating people up," this is microwaving them on high for 30 seconds. Matt D Posted October 8 Posted October 8 To be fair, Nyla's a former champ. She's also huge. If she went on a huge losing streak it'd be one thing. Nyla's always credible. That's why each new champion faces her. Britt just lost a title match so that's dodgier. But some of it is like Nigel whispering into Tony's ear, right? What sort of matches would a matchmaker think would be compelling? 1

Ok first of all this line is tremendous, and must be highlighted - well done But secondly, I agree - to me, it almost paradoxically feels like a holdover from the days of rankings. Three years ago, there would've been a little blurb from Ex like, "Nyla is 9-1 in her last ten matches coming into this bout" but without mentioning the fact that like 7 of them were on Dark against an oddly pale waitress on her day off from Hogan's Beach Shack. Now that these nuker matches have the visibility of happening on TV instead of YouTube, I think it's simply a matter of the audience being both A) more in the loop about em, and thusly B) less forgiving about em. To a degree (and I'm not painting you with this brush at all, just speaking in generalities) I think there's also a strong argument for an "audience re-training" aspect, too. NXT is probably what I would consider WWE's C-show, but with it being officially developmental, it's a much different animal than what we grew up watching on weekends from the big 2 (which is probably more where Rampage and often-but-not-always Collision land tonally). 3 1

AxB Posted October 8 Posted October 8 I mean, post-title Nyla has been in the Kane spot for like 4 years. Every champion faces her in their first defence to legitimise themselves as Champion because she's really good in that role. But sooner or later, someone has to win either of the Women's championships, go to defend against Nyla on TV a week later, and lose in her first defence. Because whilst Nyla is a really good Kane, she's not at the level of 'overexposed spare part that has somehow retained credibility despite losing every big match' that Kane was, when he was put in the Kane spot. 3
Curt McGirt Posted October 8 Posted October 8 PAC up there lookin like he got ahold of that good coke. 4

Curt McGirt Posted October 8 Posted October 8 Yep. Perry always loved that ready rock, which was the first thing I thought of when I heard. 2

What sort of matches would a matchmaker think would be compelling? Sure, but it's not just Nyla. Kyle Fletcher was losing almost every match on the main shows, but as soon as they needed him for a title eliminator vs MJF (International title), they hit the "popcorn" button on Collision vs Bryan Cage. It's a TK booking formula. Idea for a banger with a top guy vs a great guy who's currently treading water? Plug in that microwave for a one match push. AxB Posted October 8 Posted October 8 I mean, it's better than a guy getting a World title shot on the back of having been off TV for months, and on a ten+ match losing streak. 1 1

Best that can be done if you're booking week to week unfortunately. Obviously the answer is not to book week to week but it's also a byproduct of having to do big matches on TV and try to get people ready for them in short periods of time. When you have to have a champion face 2-3 people between PPVs it's a bit of an issue regardless. 2

Go2Sleep Posted October 8 Posted October 8 That main event tag is just a pure doomsday scenario. We either get the idiot Sting trope or the tag champs who hate each other trope. I also dislike Title Tuesday having only one title match that's a heatless obvious winner situation. The last Title Tuesday had 3 title matches including Shida getting an upset win over Saraya. Show looks like dog shit on paper, so it'll probably be awesome it follows AEW ppv trends.
Phantom Lord Posted October 8 Posted October 8 Yeah this isn't much of a Title Tuesday. Some of the matches should be good though. I don't get why they broke up Statlander and Stokely. They were good together. 3

Zimbra Posted October 9 Posted October 9 Jack Perry didn't have to bring up the shmeat like that. He could just look respectfully like the rest of us. 4
