Doragon Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 The PS5 version of Palword is out worldwide. But the PS5 Japanese version of the game is delayed. One of the newer patents in question for Pokemon seems to be throwing Pokè Balls in a Open World, and on a field. Which debuted in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. In the old days it was during wild yet RPG battles you could catch Pokemon, but if that mechanic had a patent, it expired years ago or nearly decade ago. There is also the different ways to catch wild Pokemon in Pokemon Go and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.

I couldn't even get past Colossus in Children of the Atom. Gotta work on some techniques or something. I find that I am far too used to the friendlier difficulty curve of the console ports, and trying to play them solo with the arcade difficulty settings I have to turn it down to one above the minimum (or for some games, the minimum.) Meanwhile, Atari 50's first DLC is out this week with new interviews (including Evelyn Seto, who designed the "fuji" logo) and some new games. 3 Sears Telegames exclusives for VCS (Stellar Track, Steeplechase and Sub Commander), Berzerk (4 versions) and Frenzy which Atari bought the rights to right after the original package shipped, and some odds and ends (Sky Diver for arcade and VCS; Avalanche for arcade and 8-bit; Atari Video Cube, Desert Falcon, and Off the Wall for VCS and Red Baron, Football, Super Bug and Destroyer arcade games.) I don't know Super Bug or Destroyer at all, and Football seems like it'd be really difficult to play with a gamepad, so the Stern games and Red Baron seem like the stars. It'll be eight bucks, not sure if there's going to be a discount for getting that and the Intellivision-themed "First Console War" pack out in Nov. 1

dogwelder Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 Welp, I somehow got lucky with the PS Direct queue and snagged one of the 30th anniversary PS5 Pros

They took a decade to iterate on a pirate ship game that they already had a base for from AC: Black Flag. They failed on their most recent ventures with licensed games (M+R Sparks of Hope, SW: Outlaws, etc.). They waited so long to do an AC in Japan that Sucker Punch ate their lunch on that one. Why would I spend money on Shadows when I can just wait a few months and get Yotei? Etc., etc. Gonna be a subsidiary of Tencent before too long.

SirSmUgly Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 Lil' toybox Zelda is just too adorable. A too-adorable, monster-copying straight up killer, mind you. But still.
odessasteps Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 I watched a couple streams of Zelda and it’s not grabbing me. But I also barely played TOTK.

I got quickly bored with BotW, but couldn't put TotK down. I tend to like the less conventional TLoZ games, though. It's sacrilege to say, but I have tried to play through ALttP like ten times and always get terribly bored with it. I find OoT to be dull. BotW is a 7/10 at best to me. But I love LA (which is aesthetically unconventional for the series) and MM, and I dug TotK quite a bit. About the only unconventional TLoZ game that I don't like is Skyward Sword. EoW isn't hard, and I doubt cutting on Hero Mode would do much to change that, but it's satisfying getting to an out-of-reach heart piece or fighting a gang of moblins using echoes, at least to me. I am only a couple hours in. Edited September 27, 2024 by SirSmUgly
NikoBaltimore Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 My wife beat every single part of BotW but didn't do DLC yet she maybe at best got through half of TotK before giving up. She couldn't put her finger on what exactly it was and hell if I know either. But maybe one day she'll come back around to it. But Echoes is one that's definitely on the radar though I didn't realize it came out this week.
Doragon Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes were made by ILCA and not Gamefreak. Some of ILCA staff used to work for the defunct company Cavia. I dunno if ILCA will develop Black and White remakes, that gen wasn't very popular. There is more demand to remake Gold and Silver again.

There is more demand to remake Gold and Silver again. Pokemon was guilty pleasure of mine way too late into my life, but man I just have zero faith in the games at all anymore. The DP remakes were the saddest excuse for remakes they’ve ever done. BW2 was the peak of the series and it’s been a steady downhill decline since then, no interest in seeing remakes given their awful games lately. Besides the vastly different profit margins, Pokemon reminds me of Harvest Moon. A once great series that got worse and worse once it moved to 3D, and the team became completely out of touch with how to improve mechanics. Then Stardew Valley came along and showed them up, returning to 2D and instead of trying to have great graphics and follow trends, just completely improved all the core mechanics and understood what fans actually wanted. unfortunately you can’t do that with Pokemon because so much of it is proprietary and branded you can’t take inspiration from it without being a cheap knock off. So the best we can get is fan games. I’m playing Pokemon Unbound now and it’s so incredible and also sad to play a game that actually understands what fans would want in terms of QoL improvements and refining the gameplay. To me the series lives on in some of these incredible fan games than the garbage GameFreak is putting out now. And they never need to change because people keep buying the slop and they’re the most profitable gaming company ever. 1

SirSmUgly Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 I think the best Legend of Zelda games are the weirdest ones, as I noted, and Echoes of Wisdom is suitably weird. I am so happy that the platforming segments from Link's Awakening have finally made their way into another TLoZ game. No Goombas, though, which is sad, but it's not a hazy dream world, so there shouldn't be. I've finished three dungeons and plan to lazily make my way through this one. It's very easy and would make a perfect "child's first TLoZ game," I think. I'm sure at least one dungeon will be a pain in my ass, though, as is tradition for these games. 1
Doragon Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 I think Nintendo should remake OOT and Majora's Mask into top down style. 1
assfax Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 The echoes in the new Zelda are boiling down to what I thought they would be. I'd say the bed would be all you need if it would have trampoline effect as well. Which it should. Combat vacillates between slow turret necromancy and throwin' shit at a preoccupied enemy. It's keeping me playing so that could be an endorsement. Only beat first dungeon but have traveled quite a bit and about to focus on whatever the water temple is. It's got the Zelda stuff you're going to want. It also has me playing my switch for the first time in a looong time. Maybe I'll finally play past world 2 in Mario Wonder and beat Metroid Dread. Metroid I should probably just restart because I'm less than 2 hours in but I need to reacquaint myself. Mostly just trying to finally clear GG Aleste 3 though. Blue Revolver got a beta with the Double Action update. Very cool. 120fps is looking damn sweet. This isn't on switch but I wrote this part here in the middle. Played about 4 hours of that Bakeru game and it's the drizzlin' shits. Boring. Wanted to love it but there just ain't what there needs to be there.

I don't give a tastefully-choreographed fuck about how we're defining the mainstream these days, all I know is UFO 50 has an idle resource gatherer, a deckbuilder, multiple tower defense games, two avant-golf joints, a proper Metroidvania, and an at-least-over-ten hour RPG on top of a lot of other games that push the point home that the game design involved is much more modern and QoL driven than the aesthetic lets on. Maybe not across the board as there's some deliberate obtuseness and arcade-ism in the top third of the "chronology", but those have their own charms and feel a lot more fair than your standard 80's score attacks. The games want to be played. Ugh. The Rally-X/Splatoon thing. The reverse Downwell actually made by the Downwell guy with the Kid Icarus vibes. The grid based chain reaction demon blower upper. The one where you use your spent 1UPs as meat platforms. The art game with the dumbest controls. Golfball Zelda. Two very different and brilliant polarity shifter/VVVVVV/Gravity Man-likes. Subnautica as Metroid. The Elevator Action? train heister. The physicsy shuffleboard/carom Stratego. The rock-solid Pocky & Rockylike. The Disney-license-Capcomesque with the smartest shrink mechanics I've ever encountered. The joy in being this overwhelmed is kind of hard to turn into words but tbf my brain has been reduced to absolute mush. Edited September 30, 2024 by John E. Dynamite 1

Sorry for the double-post. This board hates me. I just made it to say that Downwell rules extremely hard, so as much as I was planning to get to this game eventually, maybe I need to bump it up the list. It's just been a loaded year for games, y'know? But this sounds like something that might be a personal GotY contender on its own, much less packed in with 49 (50?!) other games.

Yeah, Ojiro Fumoto (Downwell guy) is one of the core half-a-dozen designers. We don't know exactly who made what because all the credits are in-universe and part of a fictional game company, but he's listed on Wikipedia as also having worked on Pingolf (sort of explains itself) and the... sidescrolling Outrunner shmup. Half the list is incomplete and I'm curious what else he did. 1
