OCT WRESTLING DISCUSSION THREAD

I said, and I quote:

Management and corporate says you're out of your fucking mind and get back to work. They know what works, and you don't, and that's why they're up there, and you're down here. They know what is best for business, regardless of what you can prove to them.

That's a pretty cool idea but if you're truly assuming that's what WWE writers are going for -- an accurate representation and/or spoof of corporate culture -- then you are giving them far too much credit.  I sincerely doubt anyone is thinking too far past, "well they are evil authority figures out the screw the babyfaces."

They have said as much. Repeatedly so, in fact. I don't know why this is a hard concept to grasp. HHH has practically said, word for word, he's in the position he's in because he knows what is best for business. HHH gives the interviews with Maggle discussing the "business" side of the WWE shows. Everything about the Authority is their perception that what they know is right and they're going to enforce that, damn what anyone else says (not to mention they rub it in the fans faces when they're right, like with Daniel Bryan and the told ya so promo HHH and Steph cut).

Then Lesnar should be doing these wounded veteran ads.

If that is what the storyline culminates at then there is no way a babyface can ever get revenge on them because even if the babyface wins, a la Bryan at wm, the Authority will be proven right in the long run. It's a horrible position to put your babyfaces in.

I can see where you're coming from. Back when it was supposed to be real, blading was part of the con, a trick used to get the marks more into the match. Now that only the mentally infirm and small children think this shit is real, taking a chunk of metal and carving your head is pretty fucking dumb.

That's what deathmatch wrestling is like for me now. We all know it's a con. We know all the spots are contrived. So when I sit here and watch these guys put needles through their cheeks or Takeda take that ridiculous over the top rope power bomb through glass onto the floor it's like... why?

Because there's a market for torture porn, which explains something like CZW still existing.

Actually, CZW's been gradually turning away from Deathmatch stuff and heading into standard Indy Wrestling territory since they've come under new ownership.

Yeah but BJW is still pretty disgusting.

I give Hyde a lot of credit in trying to expand the product. Even the TOD has been very mild lately compared to the multiple ambulance trip shows during Zandigs reign.

I was reading an interview that Jericho did recently and it really stands out how big of a douche Punk is.

(From Jericho's interview with Alvarez)

"We used to talk quite often and not really about wrestling stuff. ... We always had great chemistry and he's one of my favorite guys to work with. And then when he left the WWE he never talked to me again. I never heard one peep or squeak or anything from him again. I reached out to him a couple times just about, you know, 'hey, I'm watching The Clash from '78' or whatever and nothing. That's his decision, and it's kind of a drag. I understand professionally not wanting to be open but kind of leaving your friends behind?"

It seems that Punk is handling this whole thing in the worst way imaginable.

True. They are showcasing the old school grappler-style guys now like Thatcher and Busick, right? Poor example on my part, though my point about why that sort of deathmatch wrestling has an audience still stands.

I heard that podcast this morning and thought the same thing.  Between his brief appearance on Cabana's most recent podcast and hearing about him being a dick to a fan who recently asked for an autograph at a Blackhawks game, he really does come off like a miserable, joyless asshole.

A few weeks ago Alvarez had this thought of like "what does Punk do? He's got money. No worries. But jesus what does the man get up and do all day? We never hear about him going out except for the occasional baseball game. I'd go fuckin insane if i had nothing to do."

All I cab think of his Punk and Aj arguing about what to watch on Netflix every night.

I can't blame the guy.  If I had that much money I would get out and relax.  He was in the spotlight internationally for years.  He probably just wants to watch a hockey game.  Why does he have to do anything?  Why does Bryan Alvarez care?  Jericho is like the biggest dweeb.  I wouldn't call him back either.  "Dude I just watched the Clash from '78".  Seriously....your like 46 years old Do you really have to call your punk rock buddy and tell him about it?

This is craziness to me.  "He's to money.  No worries. But jesus what does the man get up and do all day?" Umm, how about just enjoying his life.  If I had money and no worries, I would just enjoy it.  What's wrong with that?!

Yeah, fuck trying to be friends or trying to catch up with friends when doing something reminds you of that person. Fucking assholes should just mind their business.

They worked together.  If the people who i work with called me on my off hours there is no way I would pick up.

Who calls anyone anymore? All these kids are texting and sexting with their new fangled cellular phone devices these days.

Vince mostly exorcised blading from the company during the mid-80's, and it was definitely banned outright by the early 90's ("the Ric Flair get screamed at for blading against Savage story after Bret swore up and down the blood against Piper was hardway" story) but the company damn sure embraced it in the wake of Wrestlemania 13.

Hell, in his book Bret says they convinced (or at least "convinced") Vince that the blood in that match was hardway, and Austin was still maintaining that line when he did new commentary on the match with JR for the big Austin blu-ray from a few years back.

I have to think a lot of these "oh we convinced Vince it was hardway" stories are basically just the workers coming up with some half-assed story to give Vince plausible deniability. You'd have to be a complete moron to think that Austin's blood was hardway. I get that accidents happen in the ring but you can see the cut on Austin's head. That's not what it looks like if you bash your head into a guardrail by accident.

Look closely when Austin is resting on the guardrail and you can see him, Shamrock and the timekeeper play Pass The Exacto Knife.

I still have Punk fatigue. I never thought he was that good in the first place, and now that's he's gone, I'm enjoying the break from him even more than he's enjoying the break from us. I guess Jericho thought they were buds, but they weren't really. Meh, whatever. I can't think of a person that would probably be less fun to hang out with than Punk anyway, dude. Make more friends.

In the meantime, Punk is probably watching hockey games and playing PS4 all day. Wish I could do that for a month or two. I'd get bored at some point, but until then...yeah.

WWE style is the bump and feed, rigid heat segment in the middle, build to a specific finisher while hitting signature spots system that defines the company.

WWE main event style is all that when a stronger emphasis on drama, and 2.9.

You know what I'd do if I had CM Punk money and didn't have to work anymore?
