It was said that Scott left the project because they didn't want it to be a 'horror' movie and then they bring in Raimi which suggests that it will still have those elements. Raimi's brand of horror still has an element of campy dark humor while Derrickson prefers his horror with a slightly harder edge. Perhaps that was the sticking point but it still doesn't make sense given that Marvel seems poised to usher in very horror-centric content to the MCU and other Marvel Studio's projects. We already have Morbius and the New Mutants on the horizon and Blade can't happen soon enough for my liking. Derrickson would definitely be one of the directors I'd want working on a scary MCU movie. As you said, it's also possible that Derrickson did not want to be tied down by an extensive shooting schedule or be attached to other MCU projects given that he's got Locke & Key on the way and IIRC he's also working on an adaptation of A Winter's Tale from Stephen King's novella collection, Different Seasons. Yes, he's only in talks, but Scott Derrickson is treating the news of him being in negotiations as a sign that he's actually directing the movie. I'm sure they've been in talks with a lot of people since he left the movie, but this is seemingly the only one that's gotten through to places like Variety, so I'd say it's close to being a done deal.
