It's always been sort of a boutique channel, running on decades now. That made sense when Turner was in charge. I'd read a good book on the channel if there was one. Bustronaut
I honestly have no idea HOW it stays so free of corporate malfeasance, but I welcome it. Also, the demise of FilmStruck has highlighted just how wonderful a resource TCM remains, and got them to finally port the app to Roku.

There were a few years there where AMC went from showing classic movies to showing a lot more "New Classics" from the 80s, until it became whatever it is now. S.K.o.S.
Surprised by Vice getting a Best Picture nom over Beale Street or Widows. Also was a little surprised to see a Best Original Song nom from a documentary, but looking back through the last few years, I guess that's not really an exceptional thing. Disappointed but not surprised that The Guilty didn't make it past the Best Foreign Film shortlist.

J.T.
Well fuck. Spoiler I was kinda hoping that the Adopted Screenplay category would be a walk for Spike since he probably won't win anything major for BlacKKKlansman, but beating fucking Beale Street is going to be a five hundred pound bench press. JD Washington not getting a Best Actor nom is fucking criminal. "With the right white man, we can do anything?" may be the best delivered line I have heard in a movie in a long time. Ace
First Reformed being shut out for Film and Actor is a surprise. Also a surprise that the strategy for The Favourite (Entering Colman as Actress and Weisz and Stone for Supporting) worked.

I'd consider Stone, Weisz, and Colman worthy of equal billing. At the very least, I don't consider either Stone or Weisz "supporting." So yeah, this definitely looks like the system being gamed. Business as usual. I'm stunned by how much of the nominated fare I've seen.

Craig H
And for the best picture list, I still need to see Vice, A Star is Born, Green Book, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Out of all of those, Rhapsody is probably the one I want to see the least just for all the negative word of mouth I heard or saw. Roma's probably winning anyway. Or maybe BlacKkKlansman sneaks in there...? One can dream, right?

Deserving? Sure. But then you get into how fair it to put heavyweight leading performances up against actual supporting nods. We all know awards are stupid. But they should make sense if we're going to insist on handing them out. For Best Picture, I haven't seen Green Book or Bohemian Rhapsody. Since I'm not interested in either, looks like my work is done!

GuerrillaMonsoon
Haven't seen Roma, or At Eternity's Gate yet, but having seen everything else: Best Picture: I hope Green Book wins, but I'm more of a "anything but Bohemian Rhapsody or the total piece of shit that was Vice" wins. Everything else pretty deserving. I feel like The Hate U Give was unlucky not to get a nom here. Best Actor: Should Bale really get it? It screams to me an award for commitment to the cause in putting on such an absurd amount of weight rather than a reflection of his actual performance. I think Bradley Cooper deserves it for going out of his comfort zone and singing, something Rami Malek didn't do. Viggo Mortensen was fantastic. Best Actress: Flip a coin between Gaga and Glenn Close. I'm cool with either. Best Supporting Actor: Anyone but Sam Rockwell. That's an SNL skit impersonation, nothing more. Also thought Flea deserved a nomination here. Best Supporting Actress: Ehhhhh?
