Death From Above
I totally get why the Leafs went all in on Babcock because if not now, you never can. But most teams going into a rebuild go Fire Coach (Carlyle) > transitional fall guy coach > Actual coach reaps rewards (Babcock) and they just have basically had to skip a phase. The short term interem coaching staff really doesn't count, because nothing much of significance happened in that period. Babcock could turn wine into water and the Leafs are still going to struggle this year so it's going to be really interesting to see how long the media honeymoon lasts. I'll give him this though, he's certainly not a guy that is ducking a tough situation. Babcock knows what he's got himself into. In general I think Shanahan and his 372 assistant GM's are off to a good start but obviously it's a big 12 months for them.
sabremike
O'Reilly signs extension for 7 years/ $52 million. PEGULIA BUCKS~! For those of you in the NY area the Isles are hosting a Blue-White prospects scrimmage/game this Wednesday at Barclays. If you buy them online tickets are $10 (think they are $20 at the door). Anyone who needs a live hockey fix, there you go.

Serious Darius Bagfelt
There isn't a hell of a lot left to trade if rumours are to be believed. It sounds like Phaneuf is being given an opportunity to impress Babcock/other teams for part of next season so he's not going anywhere this summer and guys like Kadri/Rielly/Gardiner are seen as young/good enough to be part of the rebuild. The only ones people are mentioning are Bozak and Lupul both of which are gonna be very difficult to move. The two players I'd have looked at are Bernier and JVR. Both are 26 which, for a team looking at a 3-5 rebuild, could make you expendable based on how old they'd be by the time things get turned around. JVR has a great contract and there was a pretty strong goalie market which isn't always the case. Probably could have got some good value there. Then you're pretty much left with a bunch of placeholders on one/two year deals that I'd hope would be flipped for picks if they were to catch fire next season. Shanahan has continually stressed patience so it wouldn't surprise me at all if things get pretty quiet in a hurry. They figure Bozak will be moved. Problem was they asked for a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him and only got the sound of crickets in return. As soon as they buckle and move him for a late round pick he will be gone. Jiji
Question: who actually watches The Reporters? Not one of those guys has any clue what he is talking about. I mean, when mainstream political/news journalism is all but dead in North America, it's not very surprising to see just how atrocious sports journalism is, but it's still pretty depressing to see these butt babies making a living doing something they're completely unqualified to do. Fucking Steve Simmons. They're like having the NHL/NBA retired vet-turned-pundit at the draft to talk about players they've never seen play. In summation: fuck the Steve Simmons. Death From Above
Bruce Arthur isn't a complete fool but no, I don't watch The Reporters either. As for Simmons... listen, one of the things I have discovered about social media through twitter over the last year is that a shocking number of blue checkmark'd people (and this is especially true in the holy field of sports journalism) are some of the worst trolls in the whole show. Simmons is so far beneath top level bloggers there's no reason at all to even follow the guy except for irony.

Charlie M.
I never watch the Reporters but mainly see them on the Trade Deadline and Free Agent Frenzy discussions. Bruce Arthur can be a complete fool in his own way. It's just in the opposite direction. He's part of the echo chamber that happens on Twitter. I don't know if that's even the right term for it but someone like Steve Simmons says something dumb and then all these like-minded individuals pounce on him in an equally disturbing manner. Simmons is only irrelevant if people ignore him. The only reason I'm ever really alerted to these old hacks is because people I like will start arguing with them or even point out how dumb they are. Damian Cox isn't so bad on TV during hockey. He seems to have educated himself on analytics. He's more of just a straight troll on Twitter who is clearly trying to get a rise out of people.
Jiji
Agreed. I just don't know of anybody who actually watches The Reporters and how it's still a show and how those people are still on TV. And I'm with you on Cox. I hated his editorial stuff but he and Friedman were voices of sanity in an otherwise insane panel on SN/CBC this year. Cox does his homework at least. Death From Above
I get what you're saying on Arthur. I say this as someone that pretty clearly identifies as a socialist at this point, but Arthur (who is one of the few sports reporters that talks a lot about non-sports issues on social media) is in that subsect of slightly dangerous neo-liberal groupthink where if you don't CONFORM to THINKING CORRECTLY like you are supposed to, you are OSTRACIZED by certain people pretty quickly. He's only about a 5/10 on the Chris Kluwe scale there, but still. This is a thing I am a lot more aware of now than I would have been 5 years ago and I at least try (and probably fail) to avoid it, at least some of the time. Jiji
Points predictions for McDavid? Totally unfair comparison: Crosby had 102 points in his rookie campaign. That's unfair for more than a few reasons but mostly because it was the post-lockout season with all them penalties and now we're worse off than the dark ages of the early 2000s in terms of penalties per game. What would be considered a success? What's the baseline that he should need to hit to not disappoint Edmontonions? Would a 50 point season be "solid"? I guess it depends on a few things, but most importantly his minutes and linemates.
mco543
On Hockey Central a month or so ago one of them predicted 80 points which seems highly unlikely. I think anything around or above 60 points should be viewed as a great success.

Death From Above
Oilers rookie record (reminding people Gretzky never qualified as a NHL rookie) is 75 points, Jari Kurri. That's lofty company but is also, given the situation, probably a reasonable over/under, I think. I will say 70, I guess? I don't know. We live in a world where Ryan O'Reilly scored 20 goals once and is a franchise player now.
