It's not fun. Sports gamblers are among the least fun people to watch anything with. It's tense and kind of ugly and sucks the joy out of the room. So yeah let's bring that to every social space we possible can. This is the same reason I gave up fantasy football. For a while the NFL became about me caring that 6 players, 5 of them on teams I fucking hated, had good days. It was miserable and dumb so I stopped. 3
DangerMark Posted July 1, 2024 Posted July 1, 2024 I find it's fine watching RedZone through the Sunday, but I wound up only being to watch Monday Night games when I had no FF riding on it. Mostly I find it's an excuse to chat shit with people I would have fallen out of touch with.

Cobra Commander Posted January 18 Posted January 18 new gambling scandal just dropped https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/43457643/emu-basketball-games-scrutiny-suspicious-betting Quote Betting integrity firms are investigating Tuesday's men's college basketball game between Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan after multiple sportsbooks reported unusual wagering activity. On Wednesday, sports betting monitor Integrity Compliance 360 distributed an alert to its clients, which includes sportsbooks, state gaming regulators, leagues and NCAA conferences, stating that a bettor had attempted to place "their largest wager to date" on Central Michigan to cover the spread in the first half of its home game against Eastern Michigan. "While investigating, the operator also found two other high stakes wagers from two accounts in a different jurisdiction, both on Central Michigan 1st Half spread," the alert states. The activity happened in Connecticut and Tennessee, according to a copy of the alert obtained by ESPN. The alert noted Tuesday's game was the second involving Eastern Michigan that had been flagged by sportsbooks this season. IC360 also sent an alert regarding suspicious betting activity on a Wright State-Eastern Michigan game on Dec. 21. In both instances, the suspicious betting was against Eastern Michigan.
Zimbra Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Terry Rozier is being investigated for 'manipulating his performance' for the same gambling ring that Jontay Porter was taking money from.
Brian Fowler Posted January 31 Author Posted January 31 Apparently this gambling ring/line fixing scandal investigation also includes "multiple colleges."

I feel like we've lost the ability to weigh consequences as a society. There is no way we should think that putting a mini-casino in everyone's pocket was going to lead to anything else. This is literally the most likely outcome to making gambling legal and accessible. 1

Indeed. And college feels like a much more vulnerable target than professionals. We already have one definitive and one looking very probable NBA player caught up in it, one of whom was making almost half a million a year and the other nearly $25 million. If you can get those guys you tip you off/pull themselves from games early, I feel pretty damn confident you can find a mid-major point guard who is lucky if his nil deal gets into the mid-four figures who is willing to shave a few points here and there. The only good part about this is that legalized sports gambling does make it easier for abnormal betting trends to be connected across multiple books, spotted, and investigated. So at least the dumb crooks are getting caught (see the college baseball shit earlier in this very thread.) But hey, use code MASSIVE SCANDAL to get a $50 bonus on your first three game parlay at...

Cobra Commander Posted February 3 Posted February 3 feels like sports officials with gambling accounts is a bad thing even if they're not obviously gambling on their sport
odessasteps Posted February 3 Posted February 3 So are the leagues being in bed with the casinos, but that genie is put of the bottle.

Brian Fowler Posted February 4 Author Posted February 4 In addition to the already known Jontay Porter, Terry Rozier, and Eastern Michigan, we can add at least North Carolina A&T and Mississippi Valley State to the list of "connected to this gambling ring and the unfolding scandal." 1

Contentious C Posted February 7 Posted February 7 Yeah, a lot of these guys are giving off "Peyton Manning's mom dresses him" vibes lately.
DangerMark Posted February 8 Posted February 8 The days of elite athletes being well adjusted human beings are long gone; to become a famous athlete in a well paying sport needs a level of single minded dedication that only the truly psychotic can manage.
Brian Fowler Posted February 8 Author Posted February 8 And then you toss in that Ohtani speaks little English, and that a lot of foreign MLB players are basically fully dependent on their translators, often not just in baseball related manners, but in life in general... Well, it's a combination that can lead to *gestures at the stories*.

RIPPA Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Turns out that 4 men's basketball players from the University of New Orleans have been on suspension since the end of January for possible NCAA violations related to sports gambling It seems to be related to the same betting ring that has ensnared all the Universities that Fowler previously mentioned It is also the same betting ring that got Jontay Parker banned from the NBA

It's still mostly a fringe issue right now, with the schools all being pretty small and Rozier the only real notable player, and it's not yet clear if he was directly involved or if someone close to him was at fault. But it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and it feels like it's one major name ot power conference team away from hitting "oh shit" levels.
