So Peoria is a real place, then? It sounds so made up. Like "Wallawalla, Washington".

A few years ago I met someone who actually lived there and that's when I realized it was a real place. I'd always assumed "Rancho Cocamunga" was a made up city name until fairly recently.

This was another in a string of steadily improving shows that AEW have been putting out so far. Shit was pretty dire for a time but they look to have regained their footing. In between running smaller arenas, tightening up the booking, and putting together really good in-ring product AEW has some momentum again.

The women's Owen seems tough to call with Mercedes and Athena on the same side of the bracket. Nobody jumps out as an obvious Toni opponent to win, or Bayne could win the title before. While I'm sticking with/rooting for Ospreay in the men's.

Tornado opener was a lot of fun, as was Penelope/Toni. Loving Penelope's continued involvement and the build up to Toni/Megan. Ospreay/Knight ruled as a team and I'm glad to see Archer get some shine even with Cage out. Solid main event from Cope/Claudio and I loved the chaotic ending with the Hangman/Swerve confrontation feeling like an important moment.

Random shit:

Props to the fan with the "Boring me to Death Riders" sign

Swerve's punches on Mox to start the match were baaaad

That mixed tag was awesome.  I guess limited man on woman violence is okay.  Really smart how they worked around that, deftly avoiding it until the Moxley DDT on Willow, which made it all the more impactful.

Dax needs to visit Cody's acting coach.  My dude only has one way of emoting and it's pretty awful.  Also, SHOOT NAMES HAVE BEEN UTTERED!

I died at Taz's reaction to Dax's "don't cash that until Friday" line.

Men's wild card has to be Jarrett you'd think? Unless he was already in and I missed it

That's the other name I thought of with Darby Allin. No, Jeff Jarrett isn't in it.

Last year, wasn't Hangman a wild card entrant who eliminated Jarrett? So there'd be some poetry to it being Jarrett this year.

Yes. Hangman Adam Page was the Wild Card last year and eliminated Jeff Jarrett.

Peoria is close-ish to Chicago.

You'll get it, but not in the way you want it.

I still have it going like this:

  • Swerve loses to Mox. Maybe Hangman comes out to negate interference from the Death Riders at Dynasty after what Swerve said on Dynamite, but has second thoughts, and decides not to. Swerve gets the Wild Card entry, Hangman wins and moves on to the finals.
  • Finals are Hangman/Ospreay. Ospreay wins.
  • Hangman & Swerve need to finally settle this. They're at 2-2-1 after the Owen quarter-finals match. Ya'll In Texas, baby.

Your top three matches at Ya'll In are Ospreay/Mox, Hangman/Swerve and... Storm versus someone, those brackets have me a little more confused for fantasy booking purposes.

Swerve/Hangman is the men's division version of Toni/Mariah. Finish their story, and you can always revisit it down the road with new wrinkles added. But in the women's case, you've got love, but here, replace it with hate.

Ospreay vs Mox only to have Mox take the title off of Mox, a person he hasn't been remotely involved with, would be extremely questionable booking. Hangman is the face of the company, their franchise, and the best actor in the company. If Hangman is 1A then Swerve is practically 1B. They have the best history against each other, their booking has practically been perfect, each have shown a ton of growth, and the DR stuff has more than run its course. You're far better off having Swerve win the title this weekend, have Hangman go through hell to win the Owen, and set up the biggest match ever on the biggest stage between Swerve and Hangman. Hell, if Darby is actually ready by All In, you can still do Moxley vs Darby, Ospreay vs Okada for the Continental Title, Kenny vs whoever for the International Title, and then have Ospreay get a huge achievement at Forbidden Door in a title unification match between him and Kenny.

Or Guelph? 😛

Ha, where did this come from? I can tell you that Guelph is very real. A very nice, quaint city here in the very real Province of Ontario. When I was a kid, I saw a closed circuit screening of WM5 at Guelph's Memorial Gardens. Coincidentally, this incredible Randy Savage WM5 promo found me in the algorithm yesterday. https://youtu.be/nG71K9VC0U0?si=RNyNZxePt_vfX0zh

i've typed this in some form in the past but the downside to these EPIC~! title reigns is that you're left to look for the epic way to end the reign so that it all seems worthwhile

I've always found Hangman corny as hell, but that interaction he had with Swerve at the end was one of those brief but incredibly powerful character building moments for both of them. I kept thinking he was going to come to help Swerve, but I'm guessing they save that for the PPV.

Speaking of corny, that Rated FTR segment was rough. FTR are one of my favorite tag teams of the past decade, but they've looked like chumps for a while and this dissension angle isn't helping.

I'd argue having Swerve take the title off Mox with a few weeks build is questionable booking, too. Mox was still feuding with Cope at least a week or two after Revolution, and him and Swerve didn't start to have screen time together until the very recently. At least with the Owen and the promise of a title shot in July, that's a couple months worth of story telling right there for Ospreay/Mox.

Let's say Darby is ready by July (if he's actually doing Everest, I'm pretty sure he'd be super fresh off coming back down the mountain) - so they pay off Mox essentially stealing Darby's title shot with... a singles match for nothing? FWIW, I don't expect to see Darby until late summer or fall, but anyway.

I'm pretty sure it's been reported they've heavily considering Omega/Okada to be a unification match in July, so if that happens, there goes the Ospreay achievement you mentioned. Plus he's one of the most over guys in the company, why keep him fighting for midcard titles? He's ready, he's been ready to be in the World title picture. He made Fletcher, had to endure a terrible MJF feud, etc. And since you mentioned Forbidden Door... I'm not sure TK could resist having a British World Champion for their annual big British PPV.

My point is, Hangman/Swerve is so good that it doesn't really need the title, so why do that?

My fantasy booking is Athena beats Mone in the tournament to set up those two in a match later (maybe for All In also) and frees up Hayter to finally have a big match since returning and challenge Toni Storm at All In.

Dax has two emotes:  “Put hand in air, gesture vaguely with hand, repeat” and then the same thing but step 1 is “put hand on forehead.”

Don’t forget Moose Jaw.

Aside from the obvious Heyman joke, it took me back to my shitty late teens where a postdated check with the admonition “don’t cash that until Friday” was a typical Christmas and birthday gift.

Mance Warner being billed from Bucksnort, TN always gets a pop from me.

Now I need some guys or gals to use Nutbush or Yum Yum. Other TN favorites: Christmasville, Sweet Lips, Stinking Creek, Bitter End.
