RIPPA Posted November 2, 2020 Posted November 2, 2020 This is will serve as the debrief thread. To keep the other thread somewhat tidy - I am going to close that one and move the discussion here. The Master List is updated and I posted the remaining movies that got votes in that thread too. If you so choose - feel free to post your full ballots here. PLEASE PUT THEM IN THE SPOILER BOX!!! Some people just mention the things they voted that didn't make the list. (You also don't have to do any of that) I am going to continue to post things in the Facts and Figures thread too. In fact now that I posted the full list - it allows me to tackle a couple of things there.

Argo (Affleck, 2012) - 83 Within you will find my ballot, which also has noted the placement on the countdown and an asterisk denotes that I was high voter. My ballot was 65 movies and 78% of them placed, 14 missed out most of which I was the only voter for. If I redid the list today there probably wouldn't be many big changes other than The Shape of Water and Coco would probably both drop a bit.
RIPPA Posted November 2, 2020 Author Posted November 2, 2020 Of the stuff on your list - Hidden Figures is probably the biggest from my "pile of shame" that I still haven't watched. My only excuse is my wife wants to watch it too so I've held off - which just keep choosing other movies to watch. I had thought about watching Always Be My Maybe but I figured I would wait post-poll since I didn't expect anyone to vote for it. I am still irrationally angry at Straight Outta Compton for how much it fucked over my Blockbuster entry 1

I'm not a horror guy so I can't add much to the Horror ballot you guys are doing. But if we do a specific decade or in the future re-do All Time I could join that.
RIPPA Posted November 2, 2020 Author Posted November 2, 2020 No chance I revisit trying to do the Horror Ballot I am deciding between two projects (that I will probably put out for a group vote) but the earliest I run those would be next summer.)

Lamp, broken circa 1988 Posted November 2, 2020 Posted November 2, 2020 (edited) So. I don't really like movies that much. That's why I never post in this subforum at all. But when the pandemic started a lot of my friends were scared and needed something to do, and so to give us something to focus on and talk about that wasn't the horror of the world, we did a mock version of this whole process. We watched movies, submitted ballots, I put some math on it, and we submitted our top 50 under my name. Nine ballots were submitted to our thing, including mine (because I watched enough movies in the process to have opinions). The first place movies on our ballots were Annihilation (Mine), The Lighthouse, Under The Skin, Spiderman Into The Spiderverse, OJ Made In America, Get Out, Your Name, Doctor Strange, and Cemetery of Splendor. Now, the last two didn't make it onto our top 50, but they were first place votes, so, that's why they got honorable mentions. Sorry Octopus. We did make one other adjustment to our list. In our balloting process, our winner was Mad Max Fury Road. But the margin between Mad Max and Sorry To Bother You was six points. So when we submitted the ballot, we agreed to move Sorry To Bother You up to 1st place, because we were worried it wouldn't get enough support to make it to the top half of the ballot without that vote. So, mission accomplished there. Watch Sorry To Bother You. Another fun result of this list comes from that whole thing posted about "the highest ranked movie that didn't make the list." Mine is, allegedly, Bad Times At The El Royale. I HATED THAT MOVIE SO MUCH. IT'S A COSTUME DEPARTMENT THAT WISHED UPON A STAR AND WAS GRANTED LIFE BY A FAIRY GOD-CD COLLECTION. so of course that's the movie tied to my name there. Seeing that made me regret this whole process, but it's not like eight accounts joining with no posts to all contribute to this and then disappearing would have looked better. I wont post the full ballot, but after remembering Jae being unhappy about Thor Ragnarok's high placement and how I'm allegedly the high vote on that, I thought I'd share my top 17 along with the group's top 17, to prove that at least I didn't want it to go down like that either. Spoiler Our top 17 Mad Max Fury Road Sorry to Bother You Annihilation Under the Skin The Lighthouse John Wick Parasite Beyond the Black Rainbow Nightcrawler Spiderman Into the Spiderverse Inherent Vice Dredd Get Out The Rover Knives Out Bad Times at the El Royale Thor Ragnarok My Top 17 Annihilation Sorry to Bother You Nightcrawler The Lighthouse Inherent Vice OJ Made in America Hold the Dark Under the Skin Exit Through The Gift Shop The Favourite Good Time The Act of Killing Beyond the Black Rainbow Mad Max Fury Road The Rover Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping A Field In England (after watching it again recently this is my #9) EDIT: btw @RIPPA could I get a copy of the spreadsheet you used? I'd like to see if I could make a version of this combining y'alls ballots and ours to see if anything interesting happens. No worries if you'd rather not. A lot of movies on my list I'm very surprised that didn't make the cut (Little Women, Boyhood, Shutter Island, Blindspotting, Dope... to name a few). Judging by the new thread, Frances Ha seems to be the movie with the votes that didn't make the Top 248.
John from Cincinnati Posted November 2, 2020 Posted November 2, 2020 Was I the only vote on First Man? When I saw the trailer, I wasn't all that enthusiastic about it. More boomer stuff about the Apollo program? Doesn't feel like something anyone needed. But the way the space travel is framed is fun as hell. You're inside the cabin or you're watching a stationary camera on the side of the ship watching space whizzing around you. Very few wide external shots, and I think the couple that are in the movie are near the end. You're in the shit and it feels dangerous as hell. I was blown away. I know La La Land and Whiplash got more buzz, but I appreciated First Man a lot more.

I'll push back in this a bit. I had two Linklaters on my list, with Before Midnight being just a few places later than where Everybody Wants Some! landed on yours. And Bernie is definitely an "Oh shit, that was this decade?!" omission for me. I'll attempt to make up for that omission by sharing some Texas geography, Linklater-style:

I've had Whiplash at #5 and La La Land at #13 as you can see, but First Man was a total snooze fest in my opinion, huge disappointment. 31 minutes ago, Andy in Kansas said: I'll push back in this a bit. And Bernie is definitely an "Oh shit, that was this decade?!" omission for me. OK, I'll give you that. You also voted for Boyhood, whereas I only had it in my honorable mentions. I think I moved it down there at the last minute, I had it somewhere in the 80s before then. As a bonus here's a list of the only 19 movies from the Top 248 list I have not seen yet: Spoiler 24) HOLY MOTORS (Leos Carax, 2012) 101) MEEK'S CUTOFF (Kelly Reichardt, 2010) 116) UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES (Loong Boonmee raleuk chat) (Apichatpong Weerasethakul, 2010) 146) BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW (Panos Cosmatos, 2010) 152) HARD TO BE A GOD (Trudno byt bogom) (Aleksey German, 2013) 154) THE WORLD OF KANAKO (Kawaki) (Tetsuya Nakashima, 2014) 161) FAST COLOR (Julia Hart, 2018) 163) THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND (Orson Welles, 2018) 170) OUTSIDE SATAN (Hors Satan) (Bruno Dumont, 2011) 175) THE TURIN HORSE (A torinoi lo) ( Béla Tarr/Ágnes Hranitzky, 2011) 192) THE FORBIDDEN ROOM (Guy Maddin/Evan Johnson, 2015) 193) COLD WAR (Zimna wojna) (Pawel Pawlikowski, 2018) 199) COSMOPOLIS (David Cronenberg, 2012) 200) FREE SOLO (Jimmy Chin/Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, 2018) 210) A DANGEROUS METHOD (David Cronenberg, 2011) 217) ELLE (Paul Verhoeven, 2016) 226) GOODBYE TO LANGUAGE (Adieu au langage) (Jean-Luc Godard, 2014) 232) 20 FEET FROM STARDOM (Morgan Neville, 2013) 233) TIM'S VERMEER (Teller, 2013) Free Solo and Tim's Vermeer have moved to the top of my watchlist. The Other Side of the Wind might be my biggest omission. I've been wanting to watch that since it came out, but always put it off for something else. I've recently watched First Cow and if that one's any indication of what Kelly Reichardt's movies are like, I won't touch Meek's Cutoff with a ten foot pole. Edited November 2, 2020 by The Z 1
Control Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 I’d post my list but I can’t figure out the spoiler tags on the mobile site.
Curt McGirt Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 Okay, I've been waiting for this. I followed the entire process of going down the list here and noted every film that I actually saw out of the entire 248. I haven't looked at all the spoilered ballots but I think it's safe to assume most of you did either 100 films or at the very least 50. This is how many of those films I have seen out of 248. Spoiler 65. When I hit #50 it was Guardians of the Galaxy. At first I was gaining no ground at all. I thought there might be a chance that I saw at most, 30-35, was shocked when I hit 50, and landing on 65 was... well, I'm kinda glad it didn't go any higher. I would have had to watch 35 MORE FILMS to hit a hundred. Some of these movies I did not remember seeing. I think I saw Under the Skin, but if I didn't remember it at all (and had to watch the trailer AND read the Wiki on it to recall anything about it) then I wasn't going to claim it. I sure as hell rented You Were Never Really Here but who knows if I watched it or not. So even if I wanted to make a list and fight against the tide of stuff I hadn't seen I'd have to rewatch stuff I didn't recall! I probably couldn't have even made a solid 50, because out of those films I did see it's not like I thought they were all incredible enough to be in a top 50 of the decade. I DIDN'T EVEN SEE THE TWO CRONENBERG FILMS THAT MADE THE LIST. But hey, I'm a COWARD~! Anywho, for any interested, here is what I DID get around to watching over the past ten years (boy it feels weird writing that)... Spoiler 237) BONE TOMAHAWK (S. Craig Zahler, 2015) 234) SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS (Martin McDonagh, 2012) 231) THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (David Fincher, 2011) 230) DOLEMITE IS MY NAME (Craig Brewer, 2019) 221) HELL OR HIGH WATER (David Mackenzie, 2016) 218) PROMETHEUS (Ridley Scott, 2012) 209) BERBERIAN SOUND STUDIO (Peter Strickland, 2012) 208) JODOROWSKY'S DUNE (Frank Pavich, 2013) 204) COLD IN JULY (Jim Mickle, 2014) 197) MARRIAGE STORY (Noah Baumbach, 2019) 191) THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI (Martin McDonagh, 2017) 185) TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY (Tomas Alfredson, 2011) 182) IT (Andy Muschietti, 2017) 180) JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI (David Gelb, 2011) 176) MIDSOMMAR (Ari Aster, 2019) 169) THE RAID 2 (Serbuan maut 2) (Gareth Evans, 2014) 166) SHIN GODZILLA (Shin Gojira) (Hideaki Anno/ Shinji Higuchi, 2016) 162) A MOST VIOLENT YEAR (J.
