Control
WALKER is fun, though if you’re interested in the historic figure, check out BURN! with Marlon Brando. As far as Alex Cox goes, I’d recommend HIGHWAY PATROLMAN, his Mexican ACAB film. Under-seen gem of a film. I think it’s on Tubi.

I'm pleased that the "Shadows in the Dark" documentary is on that Val Lewton set. It's very good, and I hadn't seen it for a long time on TCM, so I'm excited to get a copy of it with two great films. Never in a million years would I have picked this as a Criterion release, but here we are.

colonial
Today is the first day of a week-long vacation, and I decided to take my daughter, who will be 13 on Friday, to a collectible store and her favorite Chinese restaurant in a town about 20 miles from home. On the drive there, she pointed out a video store and asked if we could take a look as, in her words, "I've heard of them but I've never been in one." So we did. It's called "(Super Store) Video News" and it has a ton of DVDs available for rental and/or purchase, plus a U-Haul rental area and a flea market that sells clothing, jewelry, etc. There was a decent crowd there on a Monday afternoon (about 8-10 people) and my daughter picked up a two-for-one DVD deal for $15, getting "Up" and a straight-to-DVD sequel to "Atlantis." Owner was nice and gave my daughter a lollipop for her birthday. He also mentioned that if he didn't have a DVD we wanted, he would order it for us and we'd pick it up at the store. And it was 80s video rental store to the max -- there was an "adult" section separated by a curtain. Some of the DVDs available for rent (think it was five days for $10) were a little out there. Didn't know there was a "Backdraft 2" made. But they had some rarities, particularly with TV -- saw some 70s and 80s Britcom collections for sale. When we left the store, my daughter asked if there were any Blockbusters left. I mentioned there was one in Bend, Oregon, and that's it.

If you're into Italian exploitation, they're good. If not, YMMV. I dig the Fulci, Franco, and horror stuff.

elizium
2 hours ago, Control said: Have you seen any of these? I’m not sure if they’re the trash I like or the trash I don’t. Burial Ground and Eaten Alive I have, the rest no. Eaten Alive is, I think, the best of the cannibal movie boom of the early 80s (think Cannibal Holocaust, Cannibal Ferox, etc). It mostly takes place in a Jonestown like cult encampment, which I think is pretty fun. Burial Ground is one of the myriad of movies that tried to capitalize on Zombi's success. Moderate gore as far as these things go, and has one of the creepiest kid characters in film. This little weirdo (he's actually played by a diminutive adult) with a very unhealthy infatuation with his mother, has one of the more fucked up scenes I can remember seeing in one of these films. The rest were the ones that had the most interesting write ups in the $10 section
elizium
Because I didn't spend enough this weekend, pre-ordered that Lewton set from Criterion, The 7th Victim is my favourite of his films. Wanted to grab the Gregg Araki set as well, but couldn't justify the $150 CAD the two would have run me
Curt McGirt
Burial Ground I found out recently was actually intended as a parody by the filmmakers! And nobody realized it! Anyway, it's truly godlike in its oddness as well as its ineptitude. Eaten Alive is also probably my fave cannibal pic because it's the only actually fun one. I mean Holocaust is a masterpiece of transgressive cinema, but it ain't a good time. Now Dr. Butcher MD/Zombi Holocaust, THAT is a fun picture. It is just a riot of a mashup -- zombies + cannibals + mad scientist. And it has one of the best zombie kills in any movie ever (kills OF a zombie, not BY a zombie). Gummo is going to be an immediate purchase from me. I'm not really sure why it doesn't belong, seems like Kids or Julien would be in first but Gummo is right up their alley too. Not everything they do are Truffaut movies and this is as likely a candidate as anything.
odessasteps
I mean, criterion has always been more than just artsy European b/w movies. I mean, criterion 100 was the Beastie Boys set. And wasn’t The Killer like number 5 or 7 ? And Robocop was fairly early, iirc. edit: the killer was 8. And Hard Boiled was 9. Robocop was 23. And SpinalTap was 12. HarryArchieGus
That Gummo cover is outstanding. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see more Korine films show up in the collection. A lot of his catalog is long out of print and he’’s clearly an innovator in the same vein as his heroes (Herzog, Alan Clarke, etc). They've been showing (I’ve watched what I’ll watch and no more of) trash hunpers on the channel as well. That said, I own a copy of the original Gummo dvd release, but feel like Ive been hoarding it. Seeing as I have no intention of revisiting it. That Doesn’t make it any less as a movie, but far less as a physical archive. Im not at all into trophy items. I’m feeling that way about anything I don’t need on hand to view immediately. All this to say, how do you all feel about having a large collection of films you’re unlikely to revisit? Assuming like me you have great streamers like Mubi and Criterion Channel. Edited July 16 by HarryArchieGus
Curt McGirt
I don't feel bad. I have good memories associated with those purchases. Sure, I can steal anything I want off Soulseek and watch it, but I went to the trouble of picking through Best Buy and other places for YEARS finding this shit (once I found Paul Bartel's Private Parts for $5 at work at a supermarket!) and I'm proud of that. Having a full DVR of cool shit is cool but it ain't full collection of DVDs cool.

Assuming like me you have great streamers like Mubi and Criterion Channel. I'm split on physical copies versus streaming services. If I feel like I won't have enough time in the month to watch it, I'll purchase a physical copy. Criterion Channel and Mubi are indeed great....since I started watching movies about every day, I found myself enjoying more what's on those services versus what's on the other platforms. I don't feel like I'm missing out on not having seen Taken 2 and Taken 3 versus watching something like If Beale Street Could Talk or Seconds.
RazorbladeKiss87
I'm torn on the physical media issue. On one hand, collecting is fun and I love just seeing my collection. On the other, I have an addictive personality and that's just another facet of it. I'm trying to only buy things I know I'll watch more than once. Otherwise, a well curated hard drive will suffice. At least that's what I'm telling myself. 1

Having a full DVR of cool shit is cool but it ain't full collection of DVDs cool. I'm with you on having fond memories of collecting. Don't get my previous statement wrong - I've been an avid collector for years. I have a large wall of Blus/DVDs and a large wall of CDs and a room of records. Bins of Laserdiscs (bought after the fall of the format and mostly for 5-10$ each) and video cassettes. I'm not ready to part with any of them. I just feel confused by this era of incredible collector movie releases. Here in Toronto we have a remaining rental store called Bay Street Video that carries, for rent and sale, everything you could imagine from Criterion, Arrow, Severin, Indicator, Shout, etc. etc. It seems like everything is being packaged with the same care Criterion has been doing for years. I just feel conflicted by the want for new blus while the top format is changing again to UHD and I have far too many movies already on my App Watchlists. I do still watch my physical copies. I make a point of it. I have at least 25 titles in my Movie collection, some still sealed, that I've yet to watch (Friends of Eddie Coyle included). And I feel conflicted with having all these collections as I try to free myself of STUFF and a bit of an itch for more STUFF.
