My question of WHY still stands. Were they on a TV show or something? Did Tay-Tay pimp them in an interview? Favorite cup of a Marvel character (Natural would have mentioned something about that, I think)?

I've used some form of a Stanley (dunno the brand name) for years myself. I got a big black monstrosity that will keep ice rattling in a 90 degree car for at least a couple hours.

Re: Shogun, they are apparently gonna axe the show at the one season, regardless of its success, or maybe because of that since they feel they said all they have or they should with the story. That's... a first, sounds like.

You can seriously Google it.  Not being a dick or anything.  I saw a story a little while ago about why this trend happened.  It comes down to: Stanley had stopped making them and then a popular blog stated they were the best thermos type things.  Demand went up, they started producing them again, more blogger/insta/influencer types jumped on the train when the company leaned into social media advertising, and there you go.

Combination of Gen Z being very environmentally conscious, so reusable bottles are important to them, and it being popular on TikTok because again, cute colors. WaterTok (don't ask) loves the Stanley in specific.

Did my own legwork this time

Quote

“WaterTok” is the collective name for the TikTok trend of adding artificially sweetened syrups, powders and other mixes to big tumblers full of ice water.

Alright then. I expected something stranger.

Because while Clavell wrote the Asian Saga, the characters of Shogun were only in the one book.  There is no story of Season 2 to tell (going by the episode titles and pacing, they'll get through the book in the next 4 episodes).

I enjoyed The Gentleman but felt like they could have ditched an episode or two, I'm assuming Netflix will give it another season but on the Cobra Kai/Stranger Things timetable.

How about replacing it with the Nestle Alpine White song.

I looked up at the TV the other night to see an ad for the REELZ Channel Cops re-runs that they air all the time (alongside On Patrol) and it had footage of a cop doing a full-sprint, 40-yard field goal kick to someone's groin. Followed by people weeping in the back of squad cars. I know we as a country are full of bootlickers but this cop porn is just the worst. It got cancelled after the George Floyd protests, but here it is again, finding its own dark corner of the airwaves.

My manager was trying to make conversation with me and asked if I ever watch On Patrol. I had to laugh and tell him I've lived it. One thing about the time I spent at rehab is guys moved there from jail watching those and stuff like the First 48. Guys, we're living in this show. Can we just escape for a bit?

I thought you meant Last Man Standing the Bruce Willis movie from the 90s. That was really good, it was like Yojimbo.

Shit I brought up the commercial to a guy IN GROUP who HAD BEEN TO JAIL and his response was to laugh and say "yeah, I like it when they run". Never discount the ability to turn suffering into entertainment and have even the abused enjoy it.

Finished up with a full-series rewatch of Oz. When this came on I was around 15 years old, and watched it until I started to get bored, so about after the midway point of the fourth season (which was really two seasons in one). It was nice finishing it up and realizing they still did have some stories to tell and that it didn't completely dissolve into a prison soap opera. There were some errors made. Leo's fate was totally unnecessary to me. They killed WAY WAY WAY too many people off; it was practically a murder an episode eventually, and totally ridiculous. But when it was good, it was really good. In particular, I have no idea why all the leads in the cast weren't seen more afterwards. J.K. Simmons ended up having a solid character actor career and commercial spot, and of course Dean Winters parlayed his Ryan O'Reily character into Mr. Mayhem on the tee-vee, but you see practically none of the rest of them. Particularly striking, if not surprising, is just how goddamn good Rita Moreno was. What a firebrand of an actor. Incredible.

Harold Perrineau has had a good career, but based on how much he pops off the screen on Oz and his Mercutio being the standout part of Romeo + Juliet, I’d still say it’s been underwhelming.

When I think about it, HBO was a big initiation into the waiting world in a kinda rough way at that age. All that America Undercover stuff -- Autopsy, The Iceman Tapes, Hookers at the Point, Gang War: Banging in Little Rock -- and Real Sex, The Cathouse, even shows like Dream On and Larry Sanders and the Carlin specials. It was a special time to grow up while that stuff was just piercing the bubble of TV. (Not to mention the endless airings of Cops on Fox.)

That 2014-2020 (or so) period had a lot of TV shows I very much enjoyed. A lot on AMC/FX/SYFY, but not just. I have no idea why I'm making this list mind you. Just bear with me.

  • Fargo
  • 12 Monkeys
  • The Magicians
  • Legion
  • Hell on Wheels
  • Halt and Catch Fire
  • Leftovers
  • Orphan Black
  • Killjoys

People should watch 12 Monkeys. I bet it holds up.
