Cobra Commander
Just now, Tabe said: Yes, you can do that in college but they were throwing to get yards. yeah they were sorta playing with the possibility of ending the game on an INT Always amazing that the top college football programs don't have a pipeline to get good kickers. Kevin Wilson
The odd thing about that last pass play is there didn't seem to be a lot of receivers out there. GA did a blitz so you'd think a RB or TE or sweeping WR would have been open in the middle, but the open was vacant. They had a timeout so they could throw anywhere, seemed like they were "content" to kick from there which is never a good idea. Especially in college. AaronMLuke
Absolutely gutted the buckeyes lost, but it was a great and had a chance to win at the end. Can't ask for much more. Great pair of games.

I think most of coaches don't understand what to look for in kickers that can develop into top guys. Even most special teams coordinators usually weren't specialists when they played. That said, Ruggles was 15 of 17 this year, so it's not like he was a bad kicker.

Yeah, they seemed content when they got near the 30. That's not a gimme for anyone than Justin Tucker.

NFL guys are under 70% from 50+ and that kicking mostly on artificial turf and indoors. College guys with the wider hashes are probably 50/50 from that distance. elizium
Ohio St should have thrown the ball after Georgia called the timeout when Stroud ran into field goal range. Georgia basically gave them a free play by doing that. Take the shot at moving it 10-15 yards and if it doesn't work, then run it and use your timeouts. At least we won't see Day's horrendous beard dye job in the championship
Brian Fowler
One other thing worth addressing: I know it got overturned (after these two games I officially have no idea what targeting is) but from the point Harrison took that hit in the back of the endzone on, the Buckeyes offense shriveled up and died when it had been near unstoppable up until that point. The sample size gets a bit wonky at longer distances (kickers had a higher % from 55-59 than 50-54, but there were only 10 attempts from 55-59). Ruggles, having made a 49yd field goal at one time in his college career, is probably in a high echelon for the field so it's not fair to single him out. But CFB programs have a bit of a glaring flaw with kicking. Somehow every Australian who can kick a ball is able to punt for a college football team but there's still room for better field goal kicking
EVA
Kickers are notoriously difficult to evaluate out of HS because the rules are so different (goalposts are wider, allowed to kick from a tee, etc.). You can see them kick under college rules at camps, but then there’s no rush and no crowd. The pressure isn’t there. You never really know if they can kick well under pressure until they step on the field and do it for you. You're basically signing a leg and a prayer. I think the thing i wanted to see tOSU do was basically a repeat of ND defending against USC in 2011 or 2012. Other teams do it too, but Jesus, keep drawing a pass interference penalty to break up every single goal line pass and force them to either make a perfect pass or run it in and tOSU instead opted to just…play it like their season wasn’t on the line. Nobody has to make a game winning punt. Missing 3 feet to the right on a punt doesn't matter. Field goal kicking is very tough to project. I don't know that 43% from 50 yards is all that bad for college guys.

hammerva
Yeah Tulane has no clue how to handle a passing team as good as USC. This could be an ugly game. Edit: Looks like I underestimated Tulane's passing game as well. Edited January 2, 2023 by hammerva

EVA
Like, they are outrageously bad. This game should be 5x over with how dominant their offense has been, and yet they can’t stop Tulane at all.

Brian Fowler
If there's any team in the nation I have absolutely no clue if they are any good or not, it's Penn State. Dominated a bunch of bad teams, won close against a mediocre/decent team, got destroyed on the road and lost a fairly close home game against the only two good teams they played, but those were two of the five or six best teams in the country. I have no idea.
Brian Fowler
And they just scored a touchdown using a simplified version of the offense we ran when I was in highschool. (We would've pulled the backside guard.)
Pete
Tulane went from 2-10 a year ago to 12-2 and their first major bork win since 1934. Biggest one-season improvement in FBS history. Unreal.
