NXT TAKEOVER: BROOKLYN

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

I'm not a fan of Bayley at all so I absolutely hated to see Sasha lose. Admittedly it was a very good match and the finish was off the charts. Love the reverse frankensteiner and it hit perfectly. Though I did hate the "possibly broken hand" being ignored often, especially after Sasha's vicious hand stomps during the BankStatement. Post-match NXT Curtain Call was a bit much. Naomi and Tamina shoulda jumped the rail. Super cool to unexpectedly see Kana in the front row with Flair & Slaughter. Really thought Sasha would retain but damn she looked great all match from the spectacular entrance on. Not going to have interest in the nxt womens' division going forward if the top 3 are out of the picture.

Other than that Joe/Corbin was solid, surprising but cool finish. Disappointed Liger didn't get his traditional theme. Owens/Balor pretty good. More looking forward to SummerSlam.

Amazing, astonishing... so much greatness in those 4+ hours - Balor special, pre-show, and that insane fucking miracle of a card! I laughed, I cried, I wanted someone to smack Graves into CTE for all the shit he was talking about Bayley... yeah, I enjoyed the night. I think the youth today call it "all the feels" or some such.

I kept on waiting for a heel to win. Never happened.

Sasha Banks better be in March Madness this year.

Owens/Balor was physical. Hard to go on right after that womens match, but they made it work. What distracted the crowd at the beginning? Bryan in the stands?

Oh yeah and.... JOE CAN STILL GO! Step one of my two step plan is now complete. Now it's time for someone on Raw to get choked the fuck out. Is Monday the day?

Side note - I wonder if this will finally be the show that gets Meltzer to realize that he needs to be covering the Takeover shows instead of passing it off to other folks.

Well, there was a ufc ppv to cover too, right? :eyeroll:

Bayley/Sasha was everything I hoped and more. Just a fantastic match. I'm really excited to see what the new crew of Nxt women deliver.

Cool seeing Kana acknowledged in the crowd! She would be a nice addition to the division.

One last thought; for a second, when they showed Neville and Cesaro arriving with Bálor, I thought that they might do a Humiliation Conga Line for Owens to write him off NXT. Have both men down when Zayn, Neville, Cesaro, Joe, and Itami come out and surround him. They beat the shit out of him, hold him up for Itami to kick him, and let Zayn hit a move (a Helluva Kick if he can do that without tearing out his shoulder) before Bálor gets up, does the double stomp, and climbs the ladder. It would have protected Owens a bit better and wrapped up the narrative that Owens crossed one too many people and now they were all there to get payback at the last possible chance.

Speaking of that segment, Neville does not look like Neville in street clothes. I thought he was arena staff at first.

Sasha Banks is the best wrestler in the WWE period end of discussion.

I enjoyed the whole show, but as expected the women's match was on another level. The whole storyline and the match itself was one of the best things the WWE has done in years right up there with Bryan at Mania 30 and Zayn's redemption story. Bayley was amazing in all of this, and she took her game to a new level.

Liger/Breeze was fun as hell.

The fans went nuts for Blue Pants(who's as terrible as she is over) and I was glad to see the Vaudvillians get a monster pop for winning. Solid performance from Black and Murphy as well. Crews' debut did it's job, and Joe/Corbin was a pretty nice slugfest.

The main was one of the better WWE gimmick matches this year. I really wasn't looking forward to it much, but they had a fine match.

Now for the customary Takeover review sign off; Sasha fucking Banks.

I knew we were in for a classic when Bayley did the best "appendage trapped under the stairs" sell job ever.

Like, that never fails to look ridiculous. But I was buying what she was selling for those few seconds.

Kana being in the crowd next to Ric Flair was only like the 8th greatest thing on that show

Does it make me a bad wrestling fan when the first thing I thought was "Oh man Flair bought an Asian escort for the evening".

Everything on the show was very good to just great.   Sasha vs Bayley probably not as technically good as the Becky Lynch match but the raw emotion from wanting to see Bayley was so powerful.   The whole match and the incredible hype video gave you the feeling that this was her last stand

History will tell you have a Kevin Steen/Owens ladder is going to be brutal.  Just watch his ROH ladder wars and get ready to cringe.  I thought this was the same.  Tells you all you need to know about the guy that he is busting his butt today when he has another match tomorrow against Cesaro that can't possibly be bad.

Wonder what distracted the crowd?

Bix answered this on Twitter. People threw streamers for Balor and got thrown out. The cheers were because they changed their mind and let them back in.

The NXT crowd can range from awful to awesome and this show was a good example of that.  They were hot as shit, but still throwing out the occasional attempt at getting themselves over.

Tyler Breeze had what was easily his best match yet with Liger.  He got all his stuff in and looked like a legit threat to Liger and lost without looking weak.  I think the best thing about the match were the announcers marking out over Liger.  Lots of people here have shat on the announce team, but I think Graves and Saxton are finally developing some good chemistry.  This show was an example of just how much they both clearly love the product they're discussing.

Tag title match was really good and the best outing I've seen from the Vaudevillians yet.  They need to keep the Gangs of New York ring gear, it really helped them stand out.  That's one of the things the NXT wrestlers do so well - the little touches that add more to their character.  Ring entrances, interactions with their partners and opponents, the things they say to the crowd, all of it really adds up.  Match was really solid and Blake and Murphy looked equally impressive.

Speaking of teams, it's really surprising that Enzo & Cass weren't on the main card.  They're one of the most over acts in the company and this was their home turf, putting them on the main show regardless of what match they're in should have been a no-brainer.  If they are set to debut on Monday, it's really odd that their send-off was in an 8 man match taped for tv.

I'd never seen a Uhaa Nation match before, and he seemed decent.  One of those guys who is obviously a talented athlete, though from just this brief match I couldn't tell how good that translates to wrestling ability.  Using one of RVD's mid-match spots from 2000 as a finisher didn't really wow me either.

I've never been impressed with Corbin and tonight didn't do anything to change that.  Joe was solid and the match wasn't awful or anything, but just kind of there.  Working longer matches with more experienced guys is obviously the only way Corbin is going to improve, but I haven't seen anything from him that suggests he has potential so far.

Bailey/Sasha was excellent and I won't say much about it as others have already covered how and why it was such a delight.  I thought Bailey might have legit hurt herself when Sasha countered that top rope rana.

During the main event I was busy with work stuff and just caught pieces so I'll have to go back and watch it, but initially I wasn't blown away.  This is probably due to being used to Owen's over the top ladder matches in the indies with Generico and others and obviously they can't do that sort of thing up here.  He did look like he almost legit fucked up his head taking that bump off the ladder onto the other ladder lying in the ropes.

No, it makes you a logical wrestling fan.

Yeah.. That Owens ladder bump was nasty. Hope he is all good for tomorrow.

Sasha stomping on the hand when Bayley was trying to break the hold should have been the finish!

Some of you are sleeping on Corbin/Joe. I thought Corbin did alright, but Joe looked downright good. That strike exchange was legit. You don't see that type of thing much on WWE TV.

I need Joe/Cena in my life.

It really was a something for everyone show without being panderously so. Liger-Breeze brought the ga ga, The women brought the storytelling, Finn-Owens brought the highspots and Joe-Corbin brought "Fuck this wrestling shit, we fighting"

And Blue Pants brought the punch and pie. All told, NXT Prom was a good party.

Show was very good, top to bottom. No weak spots. Too many great things to mention. Most surprising thing though was Kana in the audience next to Flair and Slaughter.

Sasha/Bayley was potentially my MOTY pick (Roman/Brock needs to be at #3 now). I'm not sure the work was better than Sasha/Becky, but the story was tremendous and the work was at LEAST better than anything this year that didn't have Sasha in it. The collective hug of the 4 Horsewomen at the end felt like Triple H's salvation. He was punished for doing the same with the Kliq back in the day, after all.

Owens and Balor had to follow THAT match. I think they did a good job of it and the match was good, but it was still not an enviable position, main event or not!

Good to see Liger in a WWE owned ring, too, doing his thing and hopefully teaching the young guys a thing or two.

That ladder match is being criminally underrated so far. No it didn't have the story or emotion of the women's match but they really went at it full tilt. Owens looked like a scary mofo standing over a broken and battered Balor.

The ladies were fantastic. Sasha is amazing but this wasn't a one woman show. Finishing run was great stuff.

Joe looked real good. Motivated, intense, quick. The undercard was fun in general. Appollo Crews is going to get over big. Huge it factor.

Some quick thoughts not on the amazingness of Bayley/Sasha.

Tag Title Match was good stuff man. NXT went from having no tag division to a division I'm pretty excited for. Enzo and Cass, the Mechanics, Gable & Jordan, and even the Hype Brothers are good supplemental teams to these 2, and that's 6 tag teams and I like 5 of them. I'm really looking forward to the Dusty Rhodes Tag dealie.

I think people are gonna downplay how good Corbin was in that Joe match, and let me say his strikes were shit. But he bumped pretty damn well in this match (I loved his head landing first barricade bump.), and he's significantly better as "Indy Hating Heel" then he was as a face. Good trashtalker too. Joe made me want to see Joe win the NXT title.

Some are trashing the Apollo debut because Tye got offense in, but eh. I liked the match. The 10 thing has put some fresh air into Tye, and him as the new CJ Parker heel jobber who isn't a bad wrestler just not good enough to beat most people works. I think the Military Press into Standing Moonsault is a cool finish, personally.

The opener was a surreal blast too.
