odessasteps Posted March 13 Posted March 13 RIP Junior, always one of the mainstays of Mr Tony (can’t call him TK here anymore) radio show. of course, as an IU alum, there’s THAT book. 1
Zimbra Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Damn, that is terrible. RIP I think I like The Last Amateurs more than A Season on the Brink.
odessasteps Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Without having the list in front of me, I’d prob put A Good Walk Spoiled ahead of Season on the Brink.

I met Feinstein a couple of times in college when I was working in AU's SID office He was always gracious with his time - especially for kids thinking about getting into the profession (thank God I didn't) If I have the timeline correct - it was when he was promoting Last Amateurs It also hit me after seeing Navy football tweet about Feinstein's passing is how this year has already claimed two of Navy football's biggest champions (with Pete Medhurst being the other)
zendragon Posted March 14 Posted March 14 I've read The Punch, The Last Amateurs and Next Man Up. Heck of a writer
supremebve Posted March 14 Posted March 14 My biggest Feinstein memory is him getting into a fender bender during a live interview on local radio. The time I was listening to local sports radio crossed over with the time when I was reading the most books on sports, but somehow I didn't read any of his books. It probably has a lot to do with my lifelong disdain for Bobby Knight, but I really enjoyed his radio interviews. In college, I wrote a feature on my recreational kickball team that I pitched to my professor as a "Season on the Brink" style deep dive into team. I got a pretty good grade on it, but he wrote something snarky about me not quite being Feinstein. 1

I've always heard how good it is, but I don't know if I can get through a book that focuses on a person I find as reprehensible as Bobby Knight. I honestly can't think of anyone who I hold more contempt for in all of sports unless they've committed a heinous crime. Even then, Rae Carruth is clearly a worse person, but no one has ever tried to justify Carruth's behavior because he was ultimately successful.
odessasteps Posted March 14 Posted March 14 (edited) As someone who benefited from knight donating his shoe contract money to the library, I can’t 100% condemn him. Plus, he made his kids go to class and punished them for things that would have been a silly excused at other programs. But, bad human being. Edited March 14 by odessasteps 2

Well, if it helps, the book went a long way to changing the perception on Knight. He's definitely not portrayed positively. 1

If you can't stomach it because of Knight, here's something way more wholesome: https://www.amazon.com/Civil-War-College-Footballs-Rivalry/dp/0316278246 (Army vs Navy) https://www.amazon.com/Last-Amateurs-Playing-Division-Basketball-ebook/dp/B001IZC3OW (Patriot League College Basketball) 1
RIPPA Posted March 27 Author Posted March 27 ESPN is closing its LA based production of SportsCenter and moving the show back to Bristol (The studio also housed the network's soccer coverage)
hammerva Posted March 27 Posted March 27 I am beyond sick of the whole Lebron and Screamin A stuff. Just wish someone would just knock one of them in the mouth and get this over with 3 1

Dolfan in NYC Posted April 1 Posted April 1 Katie Strang from the Athletic is reporting that Pat McAfee amplified a completely untrue rumor about a girl at Ole Miss who has subsequently had her life 'destroyed.' This was during a segment with Adam Schefter talking about Jaxson Dart. The girl in question allegedly cheated on Dart with his father and though she is never mentioned by name, McAfee left more than enough breadcrumbs to identify her. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6245376/2025/04/01/pat-mcafee-espn-ole-miss-student/?source=athletic_pulsenewsletter&campaign=13017811&userId=10740135 She's been harrassed, SWAT'ed, etc. etc. Just awful stuff.

Actually, Dart wasn't even involved. The boyfriend was just another freshman at Ole Miss IIRC. Dart just got thrown in there because Schefter tried to awkwardly ask how Dart was related to the story. 1
Brian Fowler Posted April 2 Posted April 2 Yeah I think Schefter was just trying to change the topic, focus on the draft, and did it poorly. Anyway, the poor girl has moved into different, secured housing on campus and switched to doing all her classes online, it's bad. And I hope she gets something out of it, and that it eventually dies down for her, because god damn.
zendragon Posted April 2 Posted April 2 This is another situation where Pat has to wear sleeves for his apology
hammerva Posted April 2 Posted April 2 Eventually Pat is going to have to use the Tucker Carlson strategy which is just say that anybody that who takes what he says seriously are idiots and that he is playing a "character" and all that shit. Probably why he loves to call himself a doofus because it gives him a shield to be stupid and immature
