AEW TV - 8/7 - 8/13/2024 - Last Night A JJ Saved My Life

Recommended Posts

Last night a DJ saved my life... Last night a DJ saved my life, yeah... 'Cause I was sittin' there bored to death...

It's a new week and... well, Bryan raised the stakes on his match didn't he?  We may be seeing his final (AEW) match in a few weeks!  (Oh, I fully expect that carny idiot to appear one more time in Japan or even WWE before he's done for good.)

🎶

You know you drive me crazy baby, you've got me turning to another man. Called you on the phone, no one's home...

And just to show how seriously AmDrag is taking this...  he's gonna beat up an old man!

🎵

Last night a DJ saved my life... Last night a DJ saved my life from a broken heart!

Full disclosure, I set these things up in advance, so if I missed something big that happened over the weekend, please feel free to NOT contact me as I cruise the Adriatic looking for @NikoBaltimore.

Enjoy the week!

Also tonight, MJF vs Kyle Fletcher, and Mariah May vs Viva Van. And presumably quite a lot more to be added, unless MJF is going an hour again.

Is Fletcher/MJF an "eliminator" match or is the belt on the line?

It's an Eliminator. I'm vaguely dreading it. I'm a firm believer that MJF can accomplish something special at Wembley and increasingly think that he's going to try, but that sort of means not doing so here and showing everyone he can go as fast as Fletcher, etc., and that's a recipe for dreck.

Excellent selection!

Mariah May knows how to make the most of a quarter hour. Danielson v Jarrett, okay, let's see what this one has to offer. Hanger's gotta get in there to set-up something with Double Jeff. I just wanna see Ricky sell something like no other. The throat would be good, and triggers fond Macho memories from the Steamer. Bad Apple v Shibata excites me, but I'm wary of both time and shenanigans. Kyle v Jake Friedman sounds like a helluva time! Wait, is there no '(so n so) talks' or '(so n so) arrives to the building' on the pre-sell? I love the building arrivals on the other channel (steal!). Especially when Cody goes from serious to big toothy grin.

The only complaint I can muster regarding AEW, as the string of shows as of late have been tremendous, is just the complete vanishing of the tag titles.  I really miss them being somewhat of a focus on shows whereas now they're like the WWE tag belts.  Just props for an overarching angle.

Hoping for at least a full-segment affair, but fear a squash. We haven't had a Viva appearance since she wrestled Toni on Rampage a few months ago, which wasn't bad, but only a half-segment and definitely schtick-heavy. I know Viva's pretty green so no surprise or anything (I still remember her reddit post talking about starting wrestling school ffs) but she's got a great look that I think could be pretty easily parlayed into shirt/toy money if they had the right vendors and marketing team in place (see: Abaddon, Lady Frost, Alien Stat, etc.)

Is it Costco? I hope it's Costco. They got a lot of neat stuff there.

It could also be BJ's. Much like Costco, they have a lot of neat stuff...and a really good deli.

F4wonline.com:

A video package for Jack Perry vs. Darby Allin is briefly shown, with Perry watching clips of Allin pouring gas on him at Blood & Guts followed by smashing a bunch of TVs with Allin celebrating with the TNT Title in the past. My feed cut to a Taco Bell commercial halfway through this vignette and cut back right when it ended. I assume Perry’s vignette wasn’t supposed to include a promo for a cheesy gordita crunch.

I'd like to think it was intentional.

I'll take a guess and say Matt will hate the opener and love the main. And he'll likely be right on both counts. But Danielson/Jarrett was exactly what I hoped it would be and I loved it so much.

Really enjoyed Bryan Danielson vs. Jeff Jarrett.

I probably shouldn't say this but while the content of the Swerve Strickland interview was really good, seeing Jim Ross in his state wasn't.    I hope that this is him on the uptake to what he has dealt with and not the start of something worse.

Dragon vs. JJ in a Tupelo Concession Stand Brawl cosplay act is everything I wanted. I know Danielson is pretty much the original indie darling, but he’s at heart the biggest wrestling nerd of us all.  JJ does all the bells and whistles for heat. Was it DEAN~ who described Memphis psychology as “I am punching you now?” This is that and I love every second. For some reason Ricky Steamboat is here? This is in North Carolina? This is peak AEW — give me all the weirdness and stuff I grew up watching on late night cable as an insomniac. A figure four and Dragon breaking out of it with a chair?  Man, this is the shit. Crazy blood from JJ at the end. Modern day JJ is in three of my top AEW matches — this, vs OC and with Lethal against The Acclaimed. How great would Dragon vs. Lawler or Dragon vs. Terry Funk have been? And Swerve (another weirdo) comes out at the end to steal the thunder? I hope Swerve tortures Yuta and Bryan throws in the towel. This was Perfect pro wrestling.

OC/FTR vs. Rush/Roddy/Mortos is also another great AEW fever dream. Dax said on his podcast he was a huge OC fan and drinking buddy. I have been waiting for some kind of pairing with them. Fun match with everything breaking down in full nonsense.

AEW rules the mktherfucking world.

I missed that part of the show so caught up on YouTube. Man, Jim Ross has had it rough.

I honestly can't figure out if Jarrett is just straight up much better now than he was in the late WCW/TNA years, or if it's a condemnation of how trash almost everyone around him then was too. Either way he didn't look out of place in there with Danielson which is a testament to the match layout for sure.

Awesome show. Thought MJF/Fletcher was a fantastic opener and was surprised it went all the way through 15+ with no commercial. Another excellent trios match with Rush/Mortos/Strong vs. Orange & FTR. Mortos is a highlight on everything. Was a little surprised to see Rush take the fall there. Digging the FTR/Acclaimed rivalry thus far.

Main event was absolutely epic and something I hoped we would get since their trios match interaction a few months ago. Initially I was interested in a more traditional wrestling match between them, but the wild brawl we got was pretty much perfect. Loved the figure 4 spot with Bryan using the chair to Jarrett's knees to break it, great visual. Killer finish too and seeing the blood on Jarrett afterwards added to it immensely. Definitely lived up to expectations, awesome match. I imagine next week Swerve's gonna put Yuta through an absolute bloodbath.

Hyped for another round of Thunder/Deonna, Texas Bullrope this time on Collision and the House of Black/Bang Bang Gang with Christian as ref should be a blast.
