I wonder why it was decided to have eng-wal and us-iran at the same time?

The final matches of each Group Stage are played at the same time (notice Group A two matches both kicked off at 10 AM EST) to prevent teams doing shady stuff after knowing the result of the first match

The reason why....

Quote

At the 1982 World Cup in Spain, heading into their final match in group play, West Germany and Austria realized that a victory for West Germany by one or two goals would enable both teams to progress — and thus eliminate upstart Algeria, which, after finishing group play a day earlier, needed an Austria win or draw to move on.

In the 11th minute, Horst Hrubesch scored for West Germany. Then, torpidity and languor and boredom and yawn. For the rest of the match, George Vecsey wrote in The New York Times, “West Germany made more kicks backward than forward.” The arrangement secured both teams’ passage.

In his book about the rise of African soccer, “Feet of the Chameleon,” Ian Hawkey wrote that Algeria fans waved bank notes at the players, and that German television called it “the most shameful day in the history of our Football Federation.”

Algeria complained to FIFA, but no punishment would be levied. Instead, FIFA responded by amending its rules: Starting with the 1986 World Cup, all final matches in a group would be held concurrently.

I am guessing it is like the last week of the NFL season where they put all the divisions in one time slot so they might have to play hard all the time.  Although in this case, I don't think there is anything England vs Wales could do that would help the US

so far, the team that doesn't have to do anything except draw is doing better at accomplishing their goal than the team that has to win, also guessing that a La Liga ref means that you gotta die to get a penalty kick today

Talk about a sacrifice.   The good thing is that he got the goal desperately needed.  The bad news is that our best player (?) will be limping his way for another half

Spanish announcers are saying the injured Iranian guy must come off because he stepped off when he got hurt.

As someone who doesn't understand the off side rule, why have defenders near the goal at all? Why not just stay by the half mark, then the other team could never bring the ball down?

Offsides happens when a ball is passed offensively and any part of an offensive player is ahead of the last defender at the time of the pass.

Why don't you have them at mid-pitch?  Because a legal pass would happen to your fastest player and the zone's defender has to turn around and catch up AND try to take away the ball. Even if you do catch up, your defender will be dead meat the 2nd or 3rd time it happens.  Meanwhile, that super-fast player now has a 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper... that usually doesn't end well.  (And even worse if there's a second offensive player in tow.)

Okay that makes sense.
