Boardwalk Empire

I'm working my way through season 3 and I can't recall a single bad episode. Is this show a little bit slept on? It's not in the top tier of shows but it's damn close. Some of the characters and acting are so fantastic. Richard Harrow inparticular, what a role. That guy deserves some kind of award recognition. It's almost like there should be a catagory below best supporting actor for parts like that.

We had a pretty healthy thread for BE on the previous board. I love it and absolutely would put it on that top tier... the acting is top notch and the history porn is glorious.

Not really, no. There was some confusion and a lot of chatter about where the series could go from that point, but I don't remember any outright hatred for how it ended.

I stopped watching after season 2. Jimmy's story was the main hook for me, and I couldn't care less about Nuckie or Margaret. There are a lot of interesting supporting characters, but the cast is so huge and the story so sprawling that they often disappear for episodes at a time. I just can't bring myself to sit through 40 minutes of Nuckie and Eli on the hope of catching a few scenes with Richard or Chalky or Rothstein.

I heard season 3 was alright, but I'm out.

I thought 3 was atrocious.  Jimmy was the only thing I really even sort of cared about on the show.  Gyp Rosetti is so corny.  This show reminds me of The Walking Dead that it wants so bad to be in that BB/Mad Men/Sopranos/Wire conversation, but it's just not there.  It was anointed HBO's flagship show when it first aired, only to be rightfully overshadowed by GoT.  So much style over substance.  I quit watching out of boredom early in S3, but caught up over the holidays when nothing else was on.  There are a few characters I still enjoy--Richard is still amazing, Chalkie is of course great--but I think I'm out.

I thought losing Jimmy would hurt the series too, but I absolutely loved season 3. Yeah, Rosetti is a bit of a cartoon, but he's a fantastic one and Richard Harrow owns the entire season. Capone, Luciano and Meyer get moved to the forefront more and Van Alden gets a great satellite story.

Plus, Billie Kent.

Billie, Billie, Billie Kent. Squeeee.

I'll agree on Capone, Billie and they really did do a lot of great things with Van Alden.  I won't budge on Gyp though!

I'd really like the show to do some daring things with the historical figures, like maybe kill one off or have one do something extremely ahistorical to keep the show a little more unpredictable.

I am offended by the insinuation that I watch How I Met Your Mother or Nerd Blackface.

Only running shows I watch are BB, GoT, Orange is the New Black (I guess that counts?) and Walking Dead.  Of those, I guess Boardwalk Empire might be better than Walking Dead, but it's probably a wash.

This. Yes. So much.

I never get so wrapped up in fictional characters to the point where a scripted event upsets me (and yes, that includes wrestling angles).  But...

Billie getting killed in the speakeasy bombing

literally had me SCREAMING WITH RAGE at my TV set.  Even I was kinda shocked at my reaction.

Plus... "What's that? A gun? I got a gun. He got a gun. He got a gun... Everybody got guns!" might be my favourite line of the entire series.

Ahem.

"We been on the road 18 hours. I need a bath, some chow, then you and me sit down and we talk about who dies. Eh?"

I'm stoked for the next BE soundtrack just for "Old King Tut" making the cut. (Poet, hardly know it etc.) Elvis f'n Costello!

That was the biggest mark out moment of the entire series, good pick. I find myself saying the guns line all the time, to the detriment of the people around me usually.

I guess I was the only one who watched it last night.  Looks like Chalky's going to be front and center this season now that he's running the erstwhile Babette's as a Cotton Club-style establishment.

Loved last nights premiere.  Really digging the direction they are going in, as all the interesting characters are stepping into the spotlight.

-The Harrow stuff is intriguing.  Curious about the motive behind those killings, but also why he recreated his facial injury on that last victim.  Great cold open, too.

-The Dunn Purnsley stuff was fucking brutal, but I did love the scene where Chalky and Eli were giving him shit while he was burying the body.  This story felt like the centerpiece of the episode, which is awesome because that almost guarantees more Chalky this season.

-The best Nucky scene was the Billie Kent call back.  Does the butler guy have a name?  He always has the best delivery,

- Al Capone was far and away the highlight of the episode for me.  Looks like we are finally getting the rise to power story this year.  Loved the scene with the reporter.

Best premiere of the shows run?  I'd say so.
