During the main event, he said something like "Jay White is like a Slinky! He can hurt you at any time from any position". JR clearly had a different experience with Slinkies than I did as a child. Corporal punishment? I can see how that could work. 1

Like, you could get away with that in the territory days because that big match only came to town every so often, and you could repeat fuck finishes that worked in other towns because none of that was televised. But with everything televised now, constant fuck finishes come off more like HHH's reign of terror from the '00s. And that's totally fair. All I'm saying is if they're insistent on keeping the belt on Mox with dirty finishes, doing different shit would be better than the same exact thing over and over. The current playbook has literally just been Claudio & Yuta interfere in every match he's had. I'm just saying get creative instead of hitting the generic run in spam button over and over and over again. Now neither is going to be a great choice for the audience they're marketing too. We def agree on that. But vary it up so it's not just the same finish over and over and over. That's just lazy. 1 2
RazorbladeKiss87 Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 I keep falling asleep so I've seen Ospreay/Fletcher twice and nothing else. I understand why some don't care for what Will does but to me he's the realization of a Teddy Hart style talent on cable TV and there will always be a 16 year old watching his indie tapes on his lunch break inside of me. If I'm in the mood to see cool things done well, he's got me. Fletcher looked like he should be playing the cocky quarterback in a 2000s teen comedy and it fits his current persona so well. Add in the blade job and yeah, I dug this match. Bonus! Fletcher does a really bad Fargo Strut on the barricade that looked like he might be channeling PeeWee instead. 2

We’re in this post-kayfabe era where maybe half the old booking practices still work, while half just put heat on the company. I’m not sure what the answer is but times are different, fans are different, and I feel like booking has to change. 5

We def agree on that. But vary it up so it's not just the same finish over and over and over. That's just lazy. To provide a vaguely recent example (which I think is like a decade old now): when Brian Danielson was playing The Honky-Tonk Man in WWE with the World Title, they were pretty good about finding new ways for him to weasel out with the title each title defense. They didn't just have his second get him disqualified or enable his victory every match. Did it work? Well, the fans gave him a babyface reaction. (I've even run into fans who don't seem to remember that the "Yes!" chants started as a delusional heel thing.) So... sort of? It's probably not what they were going for, but it's almost certainly better than putting heat on the promotion itself. Of course, when Sheamus Ultimate Warriored him at Wrestlemania to end the run, that did put heat on the promotion with smark fans. (Because they didn't care about what made narrative sense, they just wanted a match they could throw snowflakes at. Smark fans suck. But I digress.)

I'm sure JR had one in the 50's when everything was dangerous. I got a plastic one as a kid in the 80's, my dad busted out his old metal one, I proceeded to cut myself and that was the end of that. I've also got metal lawn dart and BB gun stories for days! I straight up have a Harry Potter scar in the middle of my forehead because I tripped over a BB gun and went face first into the edge of the tv stand when I was 6. The results were an impressive score on the Muta scale I bled so much about the face. My pillhead gun toting grandfather was certainly alarmed. Especially since HE gave me the BB gun about 10 minutes prior. I did get to see my face in the mirror and thought I looked fucking bad ass. Grampy applied what he called a “butterfly stitch” and I never saw that BB gun again. Mum was super-pissed when she came to pick me up later. I run like an artist to this day. 1

And to be fair to Tony he totally gets it with people like Swerve and Hangman. Like, he's shown he can do it and kind of let the audience book it for him. Then we get the stuff that just feels out of place for what the audience wants and maybe we need to start asking bigger questions Edited January 1 by ExcellenceofAirPollution 500!!!!!!!! I’m not sure what the answer is but times are different, fans are different, and I feel like booking has to change. Rambling NYE hot take: At the risk of my answer to everything being "just copy All Japan booking," I gotta say there's only one company in the world that actually protects under-30 guys and hotshots world titles on new talent the moment they have momentum and it's post-Mutoh AJPW. That being said, they're also perennially struggling to grow their audience beyond the diehards, so I don't know if it's a feasible business model to the general fanbase but it feels like it would satisfy the armchair bookers a lot more than just endlessly protecting the same already-established guys. It's also a little different because AEW doesn't have a dojo system so their "homegrown" talent is usually just US indy guys who never worked NJPW or ROH before signing with AEW which furthers the issue of how can AEW promote "new faces" if everyone they sign is only signed in the first place because they were already buzzworthy from working a different promotion. I'd like to see 6 or 7 truly "built from the ground up" guys like Hook on top within the next two years. It seems the route with the most integrity in light of the post-kayfabe era we live and complain in. Edited January 1 by dorfus malorfus 3
