ALL IN III - 8/25/2024

It’s like they thought of every possible ending to the main event and just decided to do them all. Which does not work 99% of the time, but absolutely did today.

I remember, when I first started posting on message boards about 20 years ago, there was another lad in the UK I talked with a lot called Paul. Him and I had a lot in common and got each other into all sorts of cool pro wrestling off the beaten path across the indies, japan, mexico, wherever. I remember us both being massive Bryan Danielson fans and sending each other ROH DVDs so we could see every match he had there. This must have started around 2005, just before he won the title, and continued until he left in 2009 or they got the TV deal, can't remember which. At some point we lost contact.

I thought about those conversations tonight. Where is Paul? Does he still even like pro wrestling? And does he know Bryan fucking Danielson just won the world title at a stadium show at god damn Wembley in the year of our lord 2024?

Nigel! GYV! Sorry I'm not going back and editing my last post

Besides Britt/Mercedes I loved the whole damn show. Those two women had a lot of rough patches in their match and an absolute death slot to be in but I enjoyed the last few minutes of their match as well.

I popped huge for Nigel.

Danielson lost me with the fake injury for the eleventeenth time. It's a crutch he doesn't need.

We’re probably getting Danielson/Nigel on some random Collision in a few weeks. Let that sink in.

Nigel is taking the belt off of him

I didn't think Bryan Danielson would ever win the AEW World Championship as he's so selfless plus he lost the others apart from the draw with Hangman Adam Page but won here. Makes it all the sweeter.

I hate to say this, because Britt was so instrumental in AEW’s early success, but her back/hip is clearly fucked beyond the point of being able to go at the level she wants to go at.

I thought Mercedes looked pretty good. A very Bayley-coded match layout. That spinning whatever-the-fuck off the top that she basically did to herself was kinda impressive.

Rest of the show:

My second favourite match was the Casino Gauntlet match. I joked about Nigel McGuiness as a surprise entrant and it came to pass. Glad Kazuchika Okada, Zack Sabre Jr and Jeff Jarrett were in it. Ditto for Ricochet's debut. Really anticlimactic finish though with Killswitch going by Luchasaurus helping Christian Cage again to win.

Mariah May vs. Timeless Toni Storm was my third favourite match. Thought it was one of the best AEW Women's matches. Should have been higher on the card as it has a great build, it's for the top AEW Women's championship and it was better than Mercedes Mone vs. Britt Baker.

Will have to rewatch MJF vs. Will Ospreay as I was having streaming issues.

I thought Jack Perry vs. Darby Allin would be wilder as it's Darby in a Coffin match. Probably my most disappointing match on the show.

As someone who is much more cynical on AEW than this board is, the main event saved the show.

The 12-man tag, 10-man tag, and the 4-trio ladder match all felt like the exact same match (lots of guys getting their shit in very quickly). Too much of the same to start the show.

All I’ll remember from the ladder match is Juice taking the highest fall into getting crotched of all time.

Some completely jumbled thoughts as I got really high just as the show kicked off.

Was it me being high or was the opener a bit of a fucking mess?

Toni vs May was fucking AWESOME. Maybe again it was me being really dialled in just for this match but they absolutely smashed it. Holy shit May is great and Toni deserves her flowers here.

Nigel getting THAT pop almost instantly after the Oasis riff, showing the fans knew was what was up, was fucking magic. He looked alright considering he hasn't been in a ring for what, well over a decade? The fact we are likely getting a 2024 Danielson vs Nigel match is unfathomable.

Ricochet looked great. Zack being there was great. Okada rules. Do we need 2 matches building up a Luchasaurus face turn of all things though.

MJF vs Ospreay could have honestly been the main event and called it a night there. Amazing match, amazing moment.

I liked parts of Mone vs Baker but assume there was some flub there at the finish?

Darby vs Perry was nutty but they probably have an actual really great match in them when they aren't on a stage this big. Sting being there was cool. Is Jack the hottest heel in AEW now? I look forward to Danielson hopefully murdering him on his way out.

Main event was strong. I'll be honest, I found parts of them showing Danielson's kids and doing the fake doctor stuff (which everyone knows is a trope now and doesn't get any reaction) to be pretty uncomfortable, and not in a good way. Credit to Swerve for holding a lot that match together where there points where it almost looked like the moment was getting the better of them. Danielson's fired up comeback while looking at his family was something special.

Great show really.

This honestly may have been the best bump on the whole show. I salute it.

Love we got The Final Countdown for Bryan Danielson's entrance, only the fourth time that's happened:

Bryan Danielson vs. Kazuchika Okada. AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2023.

Bryan Danielson vs. Ricky Starks. AEW All Out 2023.

Anarchy in the Arena. AEW Double or Nothing 2024.

Bryan Danielson vs. Swerve Strickland. AEW All In 2024.

His aim was incredible. To fall from such a height and dead-on split your balls with the top rope—Juice is a true pro’s pro.

I thought this was a remarkably solid show. The only things that didn't work for me brother were the 3 way tag title match, moreover the finish and the bullshit aftermath with GYV. And the TBS Title match, which basically went out there and died a horrible death. The TNT match wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but at least it was short. My cousin was working and was asking me how the show was. My description of the Casino Gauntlet was that it was a "TK coke OD fever dream." The whole match was like a 2015 PWG show.
