Spring Training Opens 2/18/15

It's an odd situation, and I like Renteria as well, but I think the effect of a legitimately great manager is something that is very underrated now a days due to stat nuts who who can't recognize that there is an intangible part of the game you can't express in numbers. To me, Madden is as good of a manager as there is. It doesn't promise us anything, but I think it takes a serious stance of "no more waiting, we want to contend now."

I am curious if this could affect pursuit of former Rays. Shields this off-season, Price next as targets?

I still think they go after Lester. Or they go bananas and make a stab at Lester and Scherzer. I think Scherzer negatively impacts their draft slot, though.

Nope.  The first 11 slots are protected regardless if any of the teams go wild with FA's.

The Cubs have the 9th spot.  So they COULD go after Scherzer.  Not saying I necessarily WOULD, but they could and not lose their draft pick.

Maddon to the Cubs is great news. I am hopping on that bandwagon unabashedly after not really having a connection to a team other than close proximity to Seattle and the Blue Jays supposedly being Canada's team. Does Bryant start next season in Chicago?

The assumption has been that the Cubs will wait enough to buy one year if extra service. Understandable with Boras as an agent and two guys coming off solid seasons (Valbuena, Coughlan) set at 3rd and Left.

They wouldn't lose there 1st, but they would lose there 2nd (and the slot money with it)

Hi everyone. I'm gonna sit in the corner and listen to Joy Division for a few days. Don't mind me.

Remember the words of Jane Siberry on the closing track of The Crow soundtrack, it can't rain all the time.

Jane Siberry is 59. If she lives to 2161, she will have lived as long as the Cubs have gone without a World Series win.

Jane Siberry doesn't know what the fuck she's talking about.

When is the needed date for qualifying offers to be made?

5 pm EST on the 5th day after the World Series to offer. Player has till 5 PM EST on the 12th day after World Series to accept. I am not sure exactly when they start counting so it is either Nov 4 or Nov 5 to offer and Nov 11 or Nov 12 to accept. (I have seen places specifically cite the 5th)

And as an aside - Dec 2 is the deadline to tender a offer to someone under team control and for exercising player options
