That's freakin' hilarious. I remember them kind of addressing it on the interview he did with Best Friends on their old Highspots show, but I don't think I ever knew the impetus

Unless you just don't like Roddy as a matter of taste, I'm not sure I get this. He fits in perfectly for the AEW format and doesn't need to be pushed extensively. He can have a match every few weeks that will be reliably good, do some small programs, bounce between ROH, etc. This 8-man, a match with Garcia, and a friendly OC challenge probably gets him through the next 2-3 months.

I'd like to see him bump into Stoke and start a little feud with Moriarty

I'll go the other way. After everything he's been through -- indies, being ROH's anchor, flailing in NXT -- at the end of his career, Roderick deserves this. A tremendous in-ring talent who never never made the big time because of his size and charisma. Let the guy make his money and receive his accolades now.

It’s ultimately better for his family so I don’t really care if AEW has a wealth of “people like him” or whatever.

I'm blinded by the special talents of Roderick Strong and see no wrestler in the company as 'like him'. Maybe FTR, but there can never be too many near perfect in-ring technicians capable of having great matches with anybody. We'll see tho, maybe somehow he won't have the string of great matches I assume he's about to have.

That's what I was expecting too, but in addition to the problem you mention, it would kind of make Taya look like an idiot for hitting a move she knew was banned. The ending they went with was better - gets us to the same place without either issue.

Doesn’t it make her look like an idiot to be a veteran who is incapable of beating someone without her finishing move?

Not really? If she couldn't beat jobbers on Elevation, I could see the argument. But Jade has been built as an unstoppable force. I don't think Taya needing her best move to beat Jade hurts Taya at all.

I'm not sure who the biggest idiot is in this? But I'll nominate whomever is the Creative Team member who thinks Mark Sterling contract clauses are a good idea for an angle or saddled into a match. Surely there's enough to gripe, brag and shit upon between these two without fake contract clauses. And where the fuck was Taya's chance to speak? There really shouldn't have been any surprise that Taya came out totally cold to this or any crowd. They should've just had a match to see who could beat the other with their precious finisher. Maybe you give Taya a visual pin to come back to it down the road, but where's the need for a rematch when nobody gave a shit about this first one? I say that will all due respect, I dig Taya, but you can't assume your audience watches Impact or MLW or wherever she's been previously. Ol Furry Boots can talk and needs to do so to have a chance of getting over. She's not alone there. I also mean no disrespect to Jade who clearly has great presence/starpower. But... will she ever be ready to have good competitive televised matches? Certainly she's come a long way, but it's loooonnngggg been frustrating knowing she's getting no reps to improve to where she really needs to be. Great for her experience level is never going to mean simply great.

I think if the story is that she agrees to the stupid stipulation, and wasn't necessarily there to win the match, but hurt Jade's pride, and make it clear she could beat her without the stipulation, and goad her into a match on PPV instead, it sort of works from Taya's perspective.

It's just not the story to tell here against a dominant champion, rather than cowardly cheating heel who constantly worms out of a loss. Maybe if there was a spot that involved miscommunication/outside interference, and it sets up the finish, it could work. What they ended up with doesn't exactly make you think that Taya was robbed, that you think she could beat Jade, and that you want to see her try again.  

I remember that HBK/Orton match that had the superkick banned, and it was the drizzling shits from the Shawn Michaels School of Overacting.

I don’t know about robbed, but Taya losing because of Smart Mark Sterling distraction > badly executed flash pin makes me think that she deserves a rematch.
