*NEW* DC MOVIE THREAD

It just seems counterintuitive that the comic book company that pretty much wrote the book on tie-ins and mash-ups would decide to only loosely connect their cinematic properties.

I guess I am just amazed by their continued ineptitude when it comes to getting the Super Friends right in a fucking movie.  It should be second nature.

Maybe I am just expecting too much?

Their studio used to be run by Kevin Tsujihara. That pretty much says it all right there.

It's a mashup, basically, of Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, the Joker mythos, and a bit of Falling Down.

It's the second best blatant Scorsese knock off I've seen in the last month, and that's not even really a dig at it, just Hustlers is that good.

Incredible film.  Beautifully shot and Phoenix's performance was otherworldly. Controversy was overblown.  There's a problem with gun violence and mental health in this country and Joker explored those and dealt with a lot of tough issues in society.   I can see why it's already off to a great start at the box office.

Great review. This be mine:

I concur with all you say, @Ligerbusa.

I looked forward to Joker Movie (2019) on account of the character, Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime, the makeup test, the trailers especially trailer one I kept watching back and the posters all appealed to me. I hoped the film wouldn’t fall at the final hurdle. The concern wasn’t merited, this was great!

The movie’s very dark showing the man before the monster. How one can be turned based on ones circumstances. There’s also a commentary on class, have and have not’s in society. A scene near the end is perfectly done with the visuals and audio. Joker’s a new entry into my list of the best comic book movies.

Joaquin Phoenix is terrific as Arthur Fleck/the Joker and deserves the Academy Award for Best Actor. I’d like to see the Cinematography by Lawrence Sher and Hildur Guonadottir’s Score rewarded from the Academy. Best Picture nominee be nice too.

Spoiler thoughts:

  Reveal hidden contents

Best scene was Joker using his blood as a smile while standing on the cop car and cheered by the clown rioters. That’s the scene I was referring to. That will be THE scene for Phoenix’s Joker like the magic trick and interrogation with Batman was for Heath Ledger’s Joker. I’d also want to single out when Arthur meets Bruce with the nice nod to Bruce sliding down the pole play set and Joker on the Murray Franklin Show.

The reveal that Arthur was physically abused as a child by his Mother’s boyfriend. I mouthed Jesus at that revelation.

Rioters killing Bruce Wayne’s parents due to the influence of the movement started by Arthur killing the Wayne Enterprises employees.

I am loving people going at one of the greatest directors in history over an opinion. The best are the "who gives him the right?" quotes.  Hey,  it's news because of who he is.  When you make Raging Bull,  Goodfellas,  Casino, Taxi Driver,  etc.  then maybe someone will give a shit about your opinion.  Until then....

I talked to Todd a lot about what else we might be able to do, in general, just to work together, but also specifically, if there’s something else we can do with Joker that might be interesting.

Phoenix night be more interested in a sequel than expected. Hopefully it would have a script to match his talent instead of forcing him to carry the entire movie.

I would watch the fuck out of that. I need at least 4 sequels.

Despite my bank account smarting from purchasing a new car (well, the bank owns it right now), I will find cash in the budget to go see Joker sometime this weekend.

I'll probably have ramen for dinner, though.

I would watch the living shit out of that movie and three or four sequels.

Collage of all the official movie posters for Joker. First and second are my favourites. Second if pushed.

Hahaha... My friends and I were about 40 minutes in when the sound stopped working. Meanwhile, they let the film keep running as they "addressed the issue". The entire theater tapped out after about 20 minutes of that. Refunds and rainchecks all around! We'll try again Tuesday.

I’m going for a third time on Tuesday with some co-workers. I know they want to let these directors do their own thing but man, it would be nice for Joaquin to stick around for a while. If the Pattinson Batman takes off just throw him in there. He doesn’t even have to be Arthur Fleck.

Shows you how much weight Joaquin Phoenix lost for Joker when you contrast to how he is now.

It is somewhat disturbing to see what actors do to their bodies in prep for roles.

I think Christian Bale still holds the record for DC Comics body transformation madness since he put on nearly sixty pounds of muscle for Batman Begins after wrapping up The Machinist.

He only weighed 120 pounds during the principle shooting of The Machinist and then bulked up to a rock solid 185 while also undergoing extensive KFM training for the fight scenes.

Yeah, it's scary to see what some actors do to their bodies. Understandable why reshoots couldn't happen for Joaquin Phoenix in Joker and Phoenix putting weight on since then. Christian Bale from The Machinist (2004) is the worst I've ever seen. To go from that to Batman Begins (2005), wow. Bale's gone up and down in weight for roles.

Well, from what I saw of it, I'm in agreement with everyone that says it is a great performance. But the sound went out right after the subway scene so still a ways to go. I'll catch it next week.

I hope there’s never a sequel. It’s best without one.

There's going to be a sequel or crossover with Batman or something there's too much money on the table.   Joker is going crazy overseas and holding strong this weekend here in the states.  The profits will be massive.
