AEW - JUNE 2023

Well then I have just the guy for you. He loves getting into random feuds, and bringing guys that are hot down to a level below where they had been. I give to you, the Inaugural AEW World Champion, Le Champion Chris Jericho.

Actually on a more serious note I think they might circle back to Mox after the BCC/Elite feud ends. Personally I’d prefer they run Kenny vs MJF (and Kenny is someone I think 95% of the audience would get behind beating Max).

I know you're being sarcastic about Jericho, but in the spirit of transparency, I have to admit as a long-time fan of his: if he has one or two more cycles of the 'Tour with Fozzy for 6 months, come back refreshed, kill it' pattern left in him before he hangs it up full time, I'm completely down for The Nueve. I know that might be a bit of a polarizing opinion, since a lot of folks (like yourself) are growing tired of his schtick right now, but I've got a self-admitted nostalgia blind spot for the guy. I was legitimately happy for the guy with the unbelievable shape he got in after getting mercilessly hanged on by NBA Twitter a couple years back and having the embolism or clotting issue, whatever it was, over in Europe.

I'm also completely into another Mox reign, too, for one simple reason: if I had the book, we'd be hitting year one of his second reign at the end of the month

Not from his past, but a returning Kingston as AEW’s savior would be neat. Not as likely though.

Love this to death. Yes, please. Even if they ultimately decide not to have Kingston beat it for it, your comment made me NEED a Kingston feud before MJF drops it. Yonkers vs Long Island, too? That's Grand Slam III main event material.

I second Kingston as the one to dethrone MJF.  Especially if you do it at Arthur Ashe.  I don't even care if it is a Tommy Dreamer like, one day with the title, he deserves it and it would be glorious.

I've been having similar thoughts about Kingston as a Tommy Dreamer-like 'heart and soul' figure for a long time, so I actually really like this idea. Id argue it almost does more for his character than a month -long transitional/courtesy reign.

Edit: @octopus with another great comparison below too in Mick Foley

The question is, how do we get there? All Out is a couple weeks before Grand Slam, they usually do a Casino Battle Royale - who gets the chip and becomes the Justin Credible of the situation?

Edit: @zendragon I'm good with Hangman too, the only reason he didn't come to mind was because of how hard they're going with the Hung Bucks configuration right now -  if they do,  they've *got* to have a better road map for his reign. I was following the show more closely than ever at that time, and I honestly don't even remember much about it than the kick ass lights out matches with Archer and Cole - and that's not a knock on Hangman at all whatsoever

The booking definitely failed Hangman once he became champ.  I'm not going to go too far into my hate of Punk, but it seemed that Hangman as champ was always second fiddle to the booking of Punk when he should've been at the top of the card.  His matches with Cole/Archer/Danielson were phenomenal and his reign absolutely had more legs to it before "That's not going to work for me" Phil reared his ugly head.

I'm honestly good with Darby,Hangman,Kingston(this is my #1), but I really hope they don't think they have a story to finish with MJF/Punk involving the belt.  Let Max drop it and then do it, Punk is the one person I don't think should come anywhere near the belt for the foreseeable future.  If you want to discount my personal bias, i think he's shown he isn't mature enough to carry the belt.

100% on the same page, every word - and most specifically, I'm really glad you seem to be at where I am with 'yes there's meat left on the MJF/Punk bone, but idk about a title program...'

I see the temptation to add stakes, and admittedly, I DO think it would add something nice and poetic to the story with the whole childhood idol thing, signed polaroid shirt etc., but I see no evidence Punk even needs the belt to be a focal point Sure, I see the argument that it helps the young ones he works with to have a televised match with the World champion, but if Punk is so important he's apparently getting his own night on TNT, he's clearly beyond the title - It's the being CM punk title, where he headlines over Hangman just like Cena/Johnny Ace headlined over him when he was World champion. So it negates the argument, in my book - it was sound logic at one time, maybe, before all this bullshit went down, but nowadays I think it would be akin to saying 'Lets put the belt on Sting to really put Darby over!' Hogwash.

Absolutely.

My disdain for Punk is documented, however, the MJF/Punk feud is bar none one of my favorite feuds in AEW's history and I'm not a fan of either admittedly.  They did a fantastic job hooking me in and I proudly own a Punk/MJF dog collar shirt from PWT.  It doesn't need a belt, at all.  It has enough legs on it's own to merit more and I would be happy if it did, but i can't express enough my fear that they will run it back revolving around the belt and once again Punk will have his ego stroked by having someone do the job for him that he doesn't deserve.

Actually I’m a bit of a Jericho mark. I just feel like right now he could badly use a Fozzy tour. As you stated he always comes back refreshed after they’re done, and it feels like he’s more energized as a performer after having had a break too. So if they gave him a break, and in 3-6 months decided hey let’s have him beat MJF I’d be cool with that.

I just threw Kenny’s name out as he felt like the guy fans would buy into the most, and that would get a good buy rate for whatever PPV they do it at (All In or Full Gear).

Year one of Mox’s second reign would be (imo) preferable to what we’ve ended up with. No interim title BS that way too.

While I liked Justin Credible I would hope Tony has the good sense to choose someone better than that for the role. I’d say right now Takeshita would be a good choice as he’s a bastard heel and Callis could really sell him beating Eddie too. Looking at the other heels I wouldn’t be opposed to Claudio or Swerve getting that role either. Claudio for the built in history, and Swerve just because.

with the heel heat Callis/Takeshita are already getting, adding them spoiling a Kingston title win......you might get close to people literally burning the building down.  I'm in for it.

Especially if the run some place like Philadelphia the week after Eddie wins the belt. Those fans would eat Callis alive, and make for must see tv.

I could easily see the Toronto crowd turning on Punk at Forbidden Door, so that's going to be really interesting - he gets the hero's welcome in Chicago, then a few days later steps into Bizarro World. I wonder if they keep him off Forbidden Door for that reason.

New Octo question:

How would you rank AEW World Championship runs?

1. Mox interim

2. Kenny

3. MJF

4. Jericho

5. Hangman

6. Mox 1

7. Mox 3

8. Mox 2

9. Punk 1

10. Punk 2

If we’re counting the entertainment value of the scrum, Punk 2 might shoot way up the list.

He's still going to be on Collision in Toronto the night before though.

And speaking about the Collision in Toronto...and Hamilton, TK needs to announce a couple of high level main events to help sell some tickets.

Can’t believe we’re in here acting like a crowd turning hostile on Punk is something he or TK/AEW are scared of. Or pretending that he pulled a Hogan and demanded the World title.

Wild.

I seem to recall Punk didn’t even want the belt 1st time around

The guy that according to reports refused to lose to Hangman didn’t want the belt? What the hell did he think the outcome was gonna be then? Either you job or you get the belt.

And he definitely wanted it the second time, because there’s no way his ego could take jobbing to Mox in Chicago. The stink he’s since raised over the match in Cincy proves he wouldn’t even think of losing in “his” town.

All of this.

Personally, I don't want the dude coming back, but all I ask is that when he does, he isn't the guy to come anywhere close to ANY title because he obviously lacks the self awareness to carry it.
