AEW Dynamite - 4/14/2021

Just wanna say that I loved the Bucks playing off of what Kenny said on BTE.  It's one of those times where if you didn't see it then cool.  But if you do know then that makes it all the more better.

Oh, and much better show overall.

That Bucks match should have ended after the first Back-Rake. If you are not going to protect the Back-Rake as a finisher, then nothing in pro wrestling has any meaning.

Mike Tyson is The Greatest Champion in Boxing History? Uhhhh...

muhammad-ali-pardon.jpg?w=800&quality=85

AEW showing their diversity cred by showcasing two black female wrestlers in a high-profile singles match! Has WWE ever done that? I think not!

w/r/t Anthony Ogogo: Hey, if everybody goes under 20 seconds, then nobody goes under 20 seconds, you know what I mean?

Hawt Taek: Iron Mike Tyson's punches are even better than those of MMA legend Shane McMahon. I actually wouldn't mind if he got involved in Blood & Guts now.

At least AEW is still protecting the Coffin Drop Off Of a Giant Scaffold (or Whatever That Was) as a finisher. If you're not going to protect Coffin Drop Off Of a Giant Scaffold (or Whatever That Was) then, I ask you, what in pro wrestling has meaning?

(According to @Matt D's Hot Take:

Moves are the diction of wrestling and selling is the syntax. Moves can be choosing not to do something and selling can be reacting emotionally to what's happening. It can be selling the crowd booing you.

What you do is the diction, how you react is the syntax.

You put them together and get meaning.

Which: Oh hell yeah! That is a legit take, and I genuinely like it.

And, arguably, even if we don't protect finishers, it's still possible for things to have meaning).

EDIT: Good Gawd A'mighty JR was terrible tonight!

Legit marked out for Buttlander coming out to the Pixies. Suits her really well. I don't know why John Silver calling her Buttlander amuses me enough to copy it, while JR complimenting her on losing weight creeps me out...

This show did well to forward or renew feuds but holy fuck was it trash.

Here's how poorly this kept my attention, as someone who considers Wednesday their wrestling night: I paused it while on the phone with someone with 45 minutes left in the show. So little of an impression had been made on me as a fan to where I realized I'd whiffed on the main angles in the last hour.

Nothing made me want to see more even though I'd already been nominally into the program. Team Taz and Christian is a goddamn plot culdesac.

Jade and Hook are the future. Jungle Boy and Darby can hold the fort for a year or something but make no mistake those two are taking over in time. Kinda surprised Jade doesn't do a military press but then Statlander did it so at least somebody is doing it in the women's division.

Dude, we're to make JR reach his final form as a Rage Volcano, not kill him. This is cruel.

Oh shit, we had Tyson tonight!

... sure wish I knew how his appearing and involvement will improve buyrates/sales.

I'll admit I can't remember what even happened in that match, but even if something earthshattering happened I couldn't tell you what that particular angle was at play.

I'm digging everything they are building to. Wonder about the title scene, though. I know we're 6 weeks out but there's been so little build of a challenger for DoN (not that I mind; totally cool with Less Kenny) that I'm wondering if they aren't going for some kind of "special challenger" deal like Okada. No one wants to see them run Mox back, too early for Hangman. Christian? Kingston?

He's going to retire in order to post pics of his hog and like wrestling porn twitter accounts full time.

The opener made me say out loud to myself "Why do I watch this shit, I hate it!" and I immediately flipped to the Dishscapes channel and started reading a book I've been putting off.

I turned back, but most of the time I had my head in the book. The Tyson punch was sick. Ogogo getting a win off that was stupid; at least have the ref count to four before kneeling over the guy and then frantically calling it. That didn't look like some kinda MMA knockout where he had to jump in. Statlander still looks great though I miss the old makeup, forgot how nasty her finish is. Darby flew like a nut through a Hardy and a table.

I am now 111 pages into my book.

Just wait until JR sees the Young Bucks use an actually Rake to do the Back Rake in a Hardcore match.

Rude. But it's clear Hangman is still working his way through shit. I need that Miro mini feud in the summer to build him up as a final stop gap before All Out.

Your guess is as good as mine but I like how they've built up a bunch of legit threats to the title in Mox, Christian, and Miro. People want the belt. This is good.

Good stuff from Jade and Velvet. Red Velvet has been one of my favorites for a while now and Jade is joining her.  Also great to see Statlander return. The pieces of the women's division have really come together.
