Log Posted September 13 Posted September 13 (edited) My son (7) is playing football this fall and has really gotten into the NFL. He likes to ask all these, "Who was the best team when you were a kid?", "Who was your favorite/least favorite player?", etc. questions. He was asking about my favorite team, and it made me realize I didn't really have one as a kid. I grew up in Southern Illinois, and at the time, there was no team in St. Louis (closest city), so there was no one close. I was kind of into the Bears. I loved Bo Jackson, but wasn't a huge Raiders fan. But, I would religiously watch NFL Primetime every Sunday evening. I loved keeping up with the NFL overall. I think, on any given week, I could've probably told you the standings and stat leaders from memory. As annoying as Berman is to me now, that show was very formative in my football fandom. *See post about ESPN's NFL Primetime on previous page to see why I posted this. Edited September 13 by Log 4
RIPPA Posted September 13 Posted September 13 Per Kyle Shanahan - the Niners are considering putting Christian McCaffrey on IR

I mean they can't do again twice can they? If Tua even sniffs the fields next week someone needs to be forcibly fired And frankly this might be the end of Tua period. I believe his own family is telling him to retire. Dude, it was such a ordinary mundane play. This was not a huge, helmet to helmet hit. The sport would not exist if hits like this regularly caused injury. I don't know how you can reasonably protect him from collisions like this, the guy literally didn't hit him. If he goes down like that running into what might have been the smallest player on the field, how can he possibly hold up when bigger players hit him.
BloodyChamp Posted September 14 Posted September 14 Chris Berman is a GOAT and the fact that he’s past his prime doesn’t change that. He was like a play by play and a color man rolled into 1. I’m a Seminole in Florida and I think I’ve explained how my fandom was the same as Log’s. There were no Jags, the Bucs weren’t on TV they were so bad, and rooting for the Dolphins was out because I associated them with the Hurricanes. That stinks about CMC. Not for the 49ers tbh…they’ll be fine. Just stinks for him because he wants a ring and he wants to play no matter what.

He ran into Hamlin, Hamlin didn't launch, or lead with the crown of his helmet, or even really hit Tua, and Tua crumpled (and then his head slammed against the turf to compound it.) Each concussion makes you more susceptible to the next, and I just don't think there's anyway to make the game even marginally safe for Tua at this point. It sucks, but Jesus. He's got a wife and two kids, he's a millionaire, get out while you can. Go coach quarterbacks somewhere or something. Just... God 4
Tabe Posted September 14 Posted September 14 If you're wondering, Tua's contract guarantees him $167m because of injury. If he is not cleared to play again, he collects the $167m, $43m of which he gets for this season. If he is cleared but retires, he gets nothing more beyond the $43m unless he and the Dolphins come to a settlement. I sincerely hope he retires. 5 concussions in 4 years is a signal it's time to retire. ESPECIALLY when you don't need the money. 4

I agree with what you are saying and I am definitely in the camp of Tua probably need to at the very very least be out for a month or two. But I guarantee you there are some serious arguments going on in Miami from the people who are terrified every time he plays and doesn't want him to play and the people who realize that if he doesn't play their season is over and that is all they care about . Right now the only other options I have heard for the Dolphins is Skylar Thompson who was terrible and a returning Ryan Tannehill who hasn't played in about 2 years and was average then.

madl Posted September 14 Posted September 14 (edited) Considering the 2022 season was only a year and a half ago, the Dolphins seem very unprepared for a season without Tua. I dunno how you move forward after 2022 and don’t have a better replacement than Skylar Thompson on the bench. They thought Tua would never suffer another concussion? That seems charmingly naive. There’s a rumor going around that Brady might be interested in suiting up for the Fins, but I’m nots expecting that to work out even if he is interested. i’ll be surprised if Tua is back on the field any time soon. But it’s entirely his decision (and his doctors), not mine. Mostly annoyed by the faux concern and hand-wringing going on. I know ESPN talking heads have to talk about something, but when you’re opining that the team or the league should force Tua into retirement for his own good, I think you need some perspective. Tua’s an adult and, so far as I know, competent to make decisions for himself. I am guessing that, if he get cleared and plays again, it’s because he likes playing. Not all of us treat jobs as some sort of punishment from God. Some of us work because we like it. At this point, I am guessing he has reasons to keep playing besides finances. The decision to retire or not should be entirely up to Tua and his family. I don’t know enough about his life, the specifics of the situation, or how he feels about anything to even begin to have an informed opinion about what he should do. I’ve never even had a conversation with his neurologist. Also, it’s less than 24 hours later since the latest incident. He hadn’t even had time to get a proper neurological assessment. Maybe save the hand-wringing for after the doctor comes in to give him a report. On the plus side, the Tua debate did finally motivate me to turn off the Chris Canty morning show in annoyance. Probably won’t turn it back on anytime soon. I don’t particularly enjoy it so I dunno why I watch. Haven’t liked an ESPN talk show since Mike and Mike split up and Bayless left the network. It was a relief that Canty and cohosts spent so much time talking about Tua that they skipped the dopey Bachlorette parody they’ve been doing with Michelle Smallmon picking a new team to root for. Kevin Wilson Posted September 14 Posted September 14 I speak for all people that had the #1 pick in FFL this year - fuck the 49ers and hiding what his injury was until two hours before Week 1. 2

hammerva Posted September 15 Posted September 15 To steal from Rippa last year, if I put you on my fantasy team, you are probably going to get hurt this year. I have three guys out in the last 30 minutes although Kenneth Walker seemed inevitable.

I (sadly) watch Unsportsmanlike and Smallmon had already picked her new team (Green Bay) before Week 1 started. Canty has been extra aggressive and negative about Tua before the concussion, mostly because of the contract he got and for whatever reason being against Tua being more outspoken and showing confidence in his ability to help the team win which baffled me as he's always been about players getting paid.
RIPPA Posted September 15 Posted September 15 And Graham Gano - who showed up late on the injury report - gets hurt on the opening kickoff Good thing the Giants don't score any points
dogwelder Posted September 15 Posted September 15 If Daniel Jones played Washington every week he'd be a HoFer.
RIPPA Posted September 15 Posted September 15 THE GIANTS SCORED A TD! I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MY HANDS!
hammerva Posted September 15 Posted September 15 (edited) Sure enough the biggest play in the Giants will probably have all year and Nabors gets hurt. Not sure how serious it was Is Malik Willis throwing for a TD pass another sign of the end of the world Aiden Hutchinson is on pace for about 8 sacks today. Edited September 15 by hammerva
