Victator
I'm looking into signing up for the service. Sounds like a good price and I buy enough stuff off their to benefit from the free shipping. How is the streaming service and the book borrowing Kindle service. Ace
The streaming doesn't have the library that Netflix has, but it ain't too shabby. The lending library has a decent selection too.
Matt D
I Think the best thing about the streaming is that there are a lot of random old movies from the 40s/50s and not always the ones you see on TCM.
Pete
There's also a bunch of MST3K if you're into that sort of thing.
Cliff Hanger
I feel like I get my $80 worth every year, even though I don't use the streaming service that much. The Kindle Free Library is pretty cool, but bear in mind it only works with dedicated Kindle devices (the e-ink gadgets and the Fire), not with the Kindle app for smartphones, PC, etc.
Craig H
I more than make the money back at Christmas time, but by that point, I've already made it back in other ways. It's a great service that seems expensive on the surface, but it pays for itself about as well as a Sams Club card does, AND you can share/split the cost with others. Victator
While I've got you here. How good is the Kindle? Will it only work with Amazon E-Books? Or will it play other file types like regular text files?
Bustronaut
The Kindle's pretty good about loading up whatever you've got laying around. txt, doc, mobi, I think epub, but may be mistaken.
Cliff Hanger
I've had a succession of Kindles since 2009 and probably couldn't live without one at this point. The Paperwhite is pretty much the perfect reading device IMO; I can read on it for hours with no eye strain, it's easy to change print size and I only have to recharge it every three weeks or so. As for formats, it will read plain text or document files, though I haven't used that feature in so long it may still be set up such that you have to e-mail the document to a @kindle.com address to get it converted and added to your shit. It's not so good with PDFs and it won't read epub (which has become the dominant format for store-unaffiliated e-books) at all, unfortunately. Ace
But you can get Calibre to convert it from epub to mobi and upload it.
glfpunk
Yep I remember way back when they first came out I was between the kindle and nook and went with the nook because of epub. It's a non issue now.
Niners Fan in CT
I use Amazon quite a bit and I had thought for a while that I should just sign up for Prime but then I noticed Amazon Student? I know people who have Amazon Student but I never bothered to look into it. How does it work? You just need a .edu e-mail?
Brian Fowler
I think you need a verified student status, but I'm not 100% sure how that works.
_MJ_
There was a time when you only needed a valid student email address (.edu) to sign up for Amazon student. Amazon probably has closed that loophole by now.
assfax
Imma use this as a platform to bitch about how the free shipping threshold leapt up ten dollars on the month I had a second prime trial. BOLL SHIT. I'll probably sign up legit in January tho'.
