[Best Of] Top 110 Movies of 2010 - 2014

[Chaos]

This is my first time doing one of these for any board, so this may be a little different than what others have done.

We had 13 ballots submitted to make up 284 films (there's a technicality here that will show itself very late in the reveals list.

I went back and fourth on the number of films before resting on starting this countdown at #110 for a couple of reasons. 

1) 110 is a nice number when considering the decade tie-in.
2) The first film that will be shown in the countdown is one that caused great debate on this board (and honestly, everywhere) after its release.

I did allow for ties on this list. I broke any ties where a film received more votes. (Due to the low volume of ballots, I decided vote volume should supersede point averages in a tie). 97 movies hit 100 movies also hit the 100 point threshold. I also tried a couple of different point variables, and it did not shuffle my top too drastically, so the formula is straight forward. Each vote was a descending scale of 2 points with #1 vote getting 100 points.

Iron Man 3, Paul, Thor, The Wolverine, The Town, Superman vs. The Elite, The Hunger Games, Easy A, Man of Steel, Thor: The Dark World, The King’s Speech, Batman: Year One, Everything or Nothing: The Untold Story of 007, Night Will Fall and Ted.

I'm surprised Thor: The Dark World got more votes/is higher than Thor because Thor's the better of the two IMHO. I originally forgot Easy A but I was able to send an amended ballot to Chaos.

Night Will Fall is a documentary that tells and shows footage from a documentary in 1945 about liberated concentration camps. The footage from 1945 is shelved and has only recently been shown in this film. Said footage/film is horrific. Such evil on our fellow man/woman.

Kinda surprised I'm the only one who voted for Bridesmaids, Tangled, and Frozen.  

Sadly less surprised that I was the sole vote for Tusk, Machete Kills, The Village of Shadows, The Expendables 2, Your Highness, Texas Chainsaw 3D, Anchorman 2, Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever, Hatchet II, and Hobo with a Shotgun. 

I do really wish more people had seen Cropsey, The To-Do List, Labor Day, The Dead, Peep World, The Homesman, In a World, and The Secret of Kells.

There's quite a few films that were voted for in general that I felt like would have made my ballot had I seen them. That was my biggest disappointment in doing this. I had a lot I should have watched for the betterment of my list. Depending on how Cinco de Mayo festivities go tonight, I should have the first 5-10 films posted this evening.

Woof, 33 of my 50 are in that honorable mentions list.  Only got co-votes on four of them: Big Hero 6, Locke (and those were the bottom two on my list, #s 49 and 50 respectively), Coherence and Compliance.

Looking at stuff I didn't vote on, I might have been able to make room for Another Earth, John Wick and Beasts of the Southern Wild on my list.  Regret not seeing In A World, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, All Is Lost, and particularly Jane Eyre.  It's Fukunaga directing Fassbender so I should theoretically like it, but you know, it's a period piece.  Tough to bring myself to actually watch it.  Same kind of deal as Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights.

I almost put Locke on the bottom of my list too, but I ended up putting a few Marvel movies like the Thors on instead. I liked The Wolverine too, probably should have voted for that as well.

I fell asleep watching Man Of Steel, so I didn't feel it was list worthy.

Anchorman 2 and Expendables 2 were both kind of disappointing sequels, just too derivative of the originals.

I probably would have put Hobo With A Shotgun on if I remembered it.

I couldn't stand Bridesmaids though, didn't like Captain Philips much either.

I thought Ted, Prometheus & Killin Them Softly were all ok, but just not too memorable and I didn't think anyone else would vote for them

I think I watched Blue Valentine, but I get it confused with every Ryan Gosling movie and they all start to blend together and I can't remember which one it was.

Kind of surprised The Hunger Games didn't make the top 110, I'd never heard of the books but I thought it was a cool movie with some great costumes and scenery and everything.

I probably would have put Divergent on if I would have remembered it too

I think I voted for 21 Jump Street also, eh, I like goofy shit.  Hmm, guess It got cut from my ballot last minute though.

Kind of sad The Raid 2 Juuuuuuuuuussst missed the list, the fight scenes in that are insane.  The fight in the car going down the interstate is some Matrix-level crazy shit.

Yeah, that old "if it's for kids, then it can't be fun for adults nor can it be Serious Art" is a stigma which is programmed deep into our brains by the way our society has worked for the past century or more.  Despite being a childless bachelor, I seem to remain fortunately immune and can easily kill an entire happy afternoon with a Teen Titans Go! marathon.

It's brilliant, impeccably crafted and hilariously funny.  You know how when you saw the movies Ben Affleck directed, and you're all like "damn, he was an okay actor, but he's a great filmmaker"?  Same thing with Lake Bell here.  It's a crying shame that she's never made anything else besides short films and a few episodes of Children's Hospital, but she is finally in production now on another movie she's writing/directing.

They're both worthwhile.  I've seen all the major movie versions of Jane Eyre and a couple of TV adaptations as well, and Fukunaga easily did the best job with the material.  Fassbender provides a much more human and accessible version of Mr. Rochester than is the norm, and Mia Wasikowska shocked me with a performance which is way above her usual par.  The score is pretty hauntingly beautiful as well

It's certainly easier to watch than ANY version of Wuthering Heights, which is just one of the most suffocatingly nihilistic stories I've ever encountered in my entire life.  Yet even so, I'd eagerly recommend the Andrea Arnold version; she does an even better job than Fukunaga at handling the material in a jarringly personal, contemporary-feeling manner where they come across as living breathing bleeding human beings rather than historical waxworks.  It feels more like you're watching 12 Years a Slave than the sort of stuffy corseted diorama that you usually imagine when you hear "Victorian-era period piece".

Agreed that Anchorman 2 wasn't as good as the first one, but, well, "it made me laugh more frequently and with greater force and volume than any other movie I saw that year" is pretty much my whole defense there.  As for Expendables 2, I'd argue that it's better than the first one.  Better-choreographed action sequences, less jerky handheld camerawork, less reliance on obvious CGI, less time wasted on extraneous subplots, better use of the special guest cameos, and a much better villain.

It juuuuuuust missed my list too, partly because of "I liked the first one better", but also partly because it was just all over the goddamn map.  The tense dramatic stuff involving the intricate gangland intrigue felt like I was watching Infernal Affairs IV, but then it would suddenly spring Baseball Boy and Hammer Girl on you as if this were a Stephen Chow flick.  I liked both parts, I'm just not sure I liked 'em in the same movie.  Felt like filet mignon topped with neapolitan ice cream.

I think about 15 of my choices didn't make the cut, then. Hopefully there are a couple of surprises and dvdvr didn't just make another list that could have ended up on Yahoo (or whatever).

I'm not at all surprised I was the only person to ride for ROOM 237, but I'll stump for it here.  It's a sneaky great documentary that's ostensibly just a trifle about the lovable nuts who come up with bizarre theories about the hidden meanings in THE SHINING, but is, in fact, a stealth examination of authorial intent and the subjective nature of art.  It's really brilliant.

I'd love to know who was with me on KILLING THEM SOFTLY.  Undervalued!

I'll be honest. Your ballot was frustrating for me, as there was quite a few on there that I probably would have voted for as well if I had seen them.

Fist bump!  Was my #43.  That opening with the harsh dissonant noise was frikkin' STAGGERING in theaters, but less so on an ordinary home-system.  Love the eternally sweaty Ben Mendelsohn.  And that beating of Ray Liotta's character was so raw and painful, it was the biggest indictment of onscreen violence that I've seen.

Kind of shocked to see that I was the only vote for Life Itself because I seem to remember it getting a lot of love around here, but I guess those people don't vote.

I didn't put a lot of room on my ballot for documentaries this time, and I really enjoyed Life Itself, but it wasn't one I held in as high regard as the docs I did put on my ballot.

I'll guess overall that the voting here was not very reflective of what has been a quality decade so far for documentaries.

If this format proves to be too time consuming, I could change it up, but I thought I'd get a spectrum. Let me know what you think. I know this was a very debated film here. Honestly, I was surprised it was the only one that received a vote. For some reason, Rottentomatoes listed it as a 2015 film despite it getting a 2014 release in quite a few major markets.
