Random Boxing Thoughts/News v. 3

So Oscar De La Hoya seems to be going beyond just the normal old man "I could beat that guy if I still boxed" thing by continuing to talk about having a match next year.  Do boxing people think it is plausible?  I guess it would still pop a buyrate even though there is no way he is beating GGG or Mayweather as far as I can tell.

Golovkin is such a weird case to me.  Pretty much anyone of value refuses to fight him, then will turn around and say "he hasn't fought anybody".  I know Marvin Hagler had to go through something similar early in his career.  It just seems so odd to me.

Not when it comes down to money. I never thought the Froch fight was ever happening just because Froch has no real interest in fighting anyone. There is enough money on the table for Cotto and Canelo to fight each other rather Golokvin. HBO doesn't really have a bunch of fights that they can throw on PPV. They have whatever diminished iteration of Pacquiao shows up next, the impossible to make Kovalev vs. Stevenson bout, and Cotto vs. Canelo. Cotto vs. Canelo is the only feasible one of that mix that actually can make money even though the prior negotiations had been a dick measuring contest leading to nowhere. I mean there are fights out there for Golovkin, but I dunno if they are star-making bouts. They are more rating popping bouts that you can do if you can. No one is demanding Golovkin vs. Ward, but I don't see how that bout doesn't get people to tune in. There are also some random guys at 160 and 168 that might make sense. Andy Lee, David Lemieux, and James DeGale would all be much better bouts than what you would usually get with Golovkin. Beating those guys would actually mean more for his resume than beating Cotto does at this point. Cotto would just be there to up his status to another level.

Sounds like Kovalev vs. Ward might happen early next year. Of course, Kovalev has to fight Mohammedi in a few weeks. Plus, he is already scheduled to fight in Russia this fall.

Canelo vs. Cotto might either be on November 7 or November 21 at a catchweight of 155 pounds. YAY, CATCHWEIGHTS!

Leo Santa Cruz vs. Abner Mares is finally happening on August 29 at the Staples Center.

Someone give me the quick version of what Tyson Fury is.  I only ever saw his fight against Neven Pajkic and wasnt overly impressed and was shocked he went down in that fight.

He is a fairly decent boxer for someone 6'9" and has solid power. However, whatever version of him that shows up has little chance of beating Wladimir Klitschko.

I actually love that ESPN is making their PBC broadcast feel just like FNF but with a fresh coat of paint.

Also, Nelson vs. Harrison would've been the main event instead of the opener. Hopefully, even if Thurman vs. Collazo isn't the best fight ever or anything, they manage to have at least one enticing fighter in the main event. That alone would beat a lot of FNFs we got in the last three or four years.

Thurman didn't exactly look stellar last night.  Also, I hope I'm not the only one who found Collazo quitting to be a little fishy.  I mean, not questioning stopping the fight, because it was a really bad cut, but it's like no one in Collazo's corner knew they could go to the cards for the accidental butt.  The doctor and ref asked if he could continue, and he said he couldn't see, and they treat it like he quit rather than them stopping the fight?

I don't think it was a little fishy, but I think this falls on Collazo. It's like he figured, "well my vision is impaired so I might as well take my chance with a technical decision". Then, it turned out it wasn't a technical decision.

On a FNF or FS1 card earlier this year, a fighter tried to get a DQ on a borderline shot that actually looked very legal. He rolled around the ring in (fake) agony and didn't get up only to lose by forfeit.

So I believe these rulings are at the ref's discretion. If only the doctor can stop it that way, then you just can't roll into a technical decision.

I don't know what's more surprising.  That it's Berto, or that it's on CBS.  That kinda leads me to believe that this might be it for Floyd.  Go out with literally the most possibly eyeballs available on you.

Sergey Kovalev is fighting this weekend and this time against someone he should probably take out inside of six rounds. If you're following along, Mohammedi would be tuneup #1 before Kovalev takes on tuneup #2 in Russia in November. Then, we might get Kovalev vs. Ward in early 2016.

According to most of the major boxing journalist, Mayweather vs. Berto (or whoever the opponent is) is now 90% looking like it will be on PPV. Amir Khan is out of the running as an opponent.

Golovkin vs. Lemieux will be on PPV on 10/17 from MSG. Roman Gonzalez will be in the co-main.

Canelo vs. Cotto will probably happen on 11/21 at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.
