He met Keirn when they were both working an NWA show (back when Keirn and B. Brian Blair were NWA tag champs_ and Keirn bragged about how he hadn't taken a bump in over a year. My guess would be they wanted a reliable, veteran hand to fill a mid-card spot so they signed Keirn and gave him a gimmick they could trademark. No different than Wild Bill Irwin becoming The Goon or Tony Anthony becoming T.L.
