hammerva Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 So in the goodness of TMZ heart they decided to show the actual elevator video from Ray Rice. Yeah it is just as bad as you would think and really not helping the "well she provoked him" argument. Not that it means anything now since they aren't going to do anything more to Rice and I believe they didn't even look at the original video when they made their 2 game decision in the first place

But yeah, yay for lowered ethical standards.
Dolfan in NYC Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 The full Ray Rice video is out. http://www.tmz.com/2014/09/08/ray-rice-elevator-knockout-fiancee-takes-crushing-punch-video/ It is quick, and vicious. ...and only worth 2 games
J.T. Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Okay so she jumps into his grill, he has a fight or flight moment, sucker punches her, and just stands there in "Oh shit, what have I done" panic mode. Regrettable and certainly deserving of suspension, but I have volunteered at a battered wife's shelter before and eating a surprise left isn't systematic abuse. I'd have given Ray four games off without pay and under condition that he attends some spousal abuse / anger management class and confirms his enrollement. If he refuses, he can't come back until he goes to the class. At worst, I'd have made him do some community outreach at a shelter. There would definitely be some public atonement in order. Hitting his wallet would not be good enough for me.

Hitting his wallet would not be good enough for me. Umm...that was amongst the most horrible things I've ever watched. He probably should have done some time for that, I know that it isn't evidence of systematic abuse, but I wouldn't rule it out either. He didn't hesitate at all to just level her with a punch when it didn't seem to me that he was in any danger. I think the biggest question to me is did the NFL see this video? If they did 2 games seems even more egregious, and if they didn't how did TMZ get access to the video and the NFL didn't?
Burgundy LaRue Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 The biggest issue for me is how he dragged her out of the elevator like a bag of potatoes. Even if you think he acted suddenly--how he treated her after the assault takes the cake. Ray simply had no regard for his financee/wife at that point, IMO. Not to mention that she could have died from the blunt trauma of hitting the elevator rail. As for TMZ getting the video--Harvey Levin knows how to get the goods. The NFL could have gotten the video too, but I imagine they were hoping this would die down by now. When really, it's getting worse.

The hotel where it happened, the Revel in Atlantic City, is shutting down. My guess is, whatever security person who worked there is probably disgruntled about that, and sold it to TMZ. Also, I'll 100% guarantee GingerBoy and the rest of whoever needed to, saw it already. 1
Raziel Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Its not as if the Security People at Revel saved it in case someone (including the NJ State Police) wanted it and they might be willing to let it slip out. Not that I know anyone in security at Revel or anything... EDIT: Revel's not getting shut down... yet. Just up for sale.
glfpunk Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Chris Carter said that he had seen the video already and so did Goodell and the NFL.

Even if you think he acted suddenly--how he treated her after the assault takes the cake. This was the most disturbing part of the first video to me. That is not how you treat a person you respect. He basically picked her up and dropped her face down on the dirty ass casino floor. The punch is horrific, but the treatment after is probably more damning to me as to how he actually feels about his now wife.

There is no audio in the clip, so we don't really have benefit of any sort of context. It is a horrible situation but a one punch KO is not systematic abuse. It is, however, assault and battery which is a fucking crime and she should've pressed charges against him. And the young lady had the good fortune (if you can call it that) to have her incident caught on camera. For every single violent altercation between a football player and his significant other, there are probably scores of women still suffering repeated and systematic abuse at the hands of these men. If Goodell wants to do some good in the world, he needs to make sure that teams to not turn a blind eye to abusive husbands for the sake of their records. As we've seen with the bullying bullshit in Miami, the locker room can be an ugly place and fraternities like that do awful things to protect and preserve their culture. FWIW, my girlfriend's cousin is the mother of Janay Palmer, the woman being assaulted in the video. There was a lot of telephone traffic between the family members after the incident. Janay did not want to press charges despite our urging. I am still angry about it, but I had no say in the matter. I decided to mention this lest people take my earlier comments out of context and assume that I condone what Rice did.

hammerva Posted September 8, 2014 Author Posted September 8, 2014 Bill Simmons @BillSimmons 44m Goodell's ability to keep screwing up signature decisions is unparalleled. I don't trust him to organize a fast-food order at this point. He also said that if the Ravens don't waive Rice they are cowards. If I was the Ravens I would waive him because of what he did and because it looks like he hit the running back wall. meanwhile Greg hardy of the Panthers is biting his nails to the core with all of this guns because as far as I know they still haven't made a decision on that one.
BobbyWhioux Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Gonna be wonderful when Rice serves his suspension and is back in time to wear pink cleats/gloves and a pink towel all through October. 2

hammerva Posted September 8, 2014 Author Posted September 8, 2014 Gonna be wonderful when Rice serves his suspension and is back in time to wear pink cleats/gloves and a pink towel all through October. Don't forget the standing ovation that he is going to get in Baltimore. You really think that the same people who cheered in a scrimmage are going to boo now? Not in the NFL. And before I get bashed on it, I realized that if Ray Rice played on every other team in the NFL the fan reaction would be the same.
odessasteps Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Someone at work said last week "you dont know what she did in the elevator." And it was a woman that said that.

I have caught myself coming dangerously close to finding a sliver of benefit of doubt to give Ray McDonald, myself. Or at least thinking "you idiot, the team needs you" as much as "you idiot, beating your wife is wrong." Sports team loyalty makes hypocrites of us all.

Burgundy LaRue Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 If nothing else, this proves that Goodell is 100% oblivious and lacks basic common sense. A rotten eggplant could have done better with this situation. I realize that much of the anger stems from us seeing the video. If there's no video, the outrage wouldn't be nearly as loud. But for the love of humanity, show better judgment in sending a real message. Because Heaven forbid if Goodell tries to appeal to the 50% of the NFL fanbase that carries XX chromosomes who spend money on the sport. The Shield should cancel Breast Cancer Awareness Month this year. It's going to ring more hollow than a jack-o-lantern. 3
Burgundy LaRue Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Someone at work said last week "you dont know what she did in the elevator." And it was a woman that said that. That's not surprising. If you want to tear a woman to shreds, get another woman to do the job. Women's suffrage, indeed.

Dolfan in NYC Posted September 8, 2014 Posted September 8, 2014 Pot Roast just tweeted that Ray Rice should be kicked out of the NFL. For an active player in a league that has/had murderers in it, that's bold http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24701021/current-former-nfl-players-tweet-out-intense-criticism-of-ray-rice
