odessasteps Posted September 7 Posted September 7 I don’t know about most people here, but I have no plans to get Netflix for RAW and presumably everything else. If I didn’t already have a peacock, I wouldn’t have gotten tHat for their content.
Yo-Yo's Roomie Posted September 7 Posted September 7 If anything, I'd cancel my Netflix. Don't want it to be seen that any of my money is going to that rapist-enabling company. 3

If we only seen Ric Flair past 40 I'm sure alot of us would still think he was very good but if we never seen him in the NWA , JCP, Mid-Atlantic , touring world champion and before working the territories then we would have missed out on alot of his best work. That would be like judging 90% of 70s and 80s wrestlers based on their WWF run. The TV style , the schedule and Vinces quirks are all things that play a roll in limiting a wrestlers abilities We’ve definitely talked about this before. Flair’s pinnacle was 1984 or so, not 1989 even though he was still really freaking great while also having really freaking great opponents. In 1984 he was carrying Dusty, Ronnie, Hawk who he wrestled a lot somehow. Even Harley Race, which is not a knock. That’s why Harley finally handed off to Flair for good. If I had to pick the 10 best Ric Flair matches for just wrestling, or work if I’m talking to Bret Hart, I’m picking nothing from any Starrcade that made all that money. I’m probably not even picking a Steamboat match unless there’s an older one somewhere that’s better. I haven’t gotten around to watching their older matches.
odessasteps Posted September 7 Posted September 7 Did you mean 86, where he was wrestling all the different people at the Bash? Although in 1984, he was still a touring champion and wrestling people all around the country and in foreign countries. But I would definitely agree he was probably a better worker when he did not have to wrestle the Flair style match against a lot of green bodybuilder types (warriors, sting, Luger, Nikita, etc). 1
AxB Posted September 7 Posted September 7 Flair always said that his best Steamboat matches were in 79, not 89.
Stefanie Sparkleface Posted September 7 Posted September 7 For my money, the best thing Flair ever did was when he showed up in Memphis in 1982 as the calm, cool, collected touring champ, gets baited into wrestling Jerry Lawler on TV, then goes absolutely berserk after the match and gives a $10,000 check to Jimmy Hart to make sure Lawler never gets close to contending for his title, which he promises to sign when Lawler's put out of wrestling. If Lawler wasn't already a made man in Memphis before that, he sure was after that. Speaking of Flair, Memphis, and Koko B. Ware, there's a really great Flair/Koko match from 1985 from Memphis that's worth tracking down. 4
BloodyChamp Posted September 7 Posted September 7 He was always wrestling different people but the most available matches aren’t really the best. Dusty, Harley, I said Ronnie even though that was way later in 1987 but still. Even though the Steamboat matches have always been out there, they seem like they were out there from least to best. It was the Spring Stampede 94 tape that was in retail stores back in the day.
odessasteps Posted September 7 Posted September 7 The Story about the Koko match is that neither Lawler nor Dundee wanted to lose to Flair, so they gave the match to Koko.
Log Posted September 7 Posted September 7 The DVDVR 80’s sets are littered with great Flair local defenses. There’s the aforementioned Koko defense and the Lawler angle in Memphis. There’s the DiBiase defense in Mid South that is, for my money, one of the single greatest pro wrestling segments ever shown. He had a few good ones in World Class, and I seem to recall one against Gordy being my personal favorite. I’m probably missing a couple others. 2

If a good show or movie hits Netflix, I'll subscribe for a month and maybe watch something from the archive too. 1
Technico Support Posted September 7 Posted September 7 I already have Netflix but I stopped watching WWE in January of 2017 (after being a fan since 1985) and there’s nothing calling me back that balances their continuing to be run by scumbags. 4
BloodyChamp Posted September 7 Posted September 7 I’ll add that I’ve seen many. It seems like every time something comes up I’ve never seen it. The Dibiase match isn’t exactly a pure wrestling match either, but it is 1 of the best, most unique angles in history that doesn’t seem like such just because it’s been copied so many times. And it all happened in 1 hour. It felt like 3, or like an hour after a year long build. Just an amazing match. I think the best older technical wrestling match I’ve seen by Ric Flair is actually from Japan vs Ricky Choshu? Or Jumbo? Idk…I remember a good one vs Brad Armstrong. Kerry Von Erich. I remember coming to this conclusion about Flair actually, when I first saw some older stuff that wasn’t token picks of Starrcade main events or whatever.

I first saw this on whatever WWF TV show was on Fox that started the wrestling block back in the day, which of course was otherwise NWA and regional TV. It was the only match on the show I ever saw that wasn’t a total squash. Koko beat up a guy in a tag team match and did that thing, tagged his partner and his partner lost. 1
RazorbladeKiss87 Posted September 7 Posted September 7 (edited) I might have a new favorite comedy spot. Watching the ChocoPro show that aired last night I saw a tag match with Dr. Gore. He put his opponent in a wrist lock, gave his arm an exam and acted like he found something terrible, even showing it to his partners and the opponent acted so scared he fell prey to another move. The whole time, the announcer is saying "Oh no! What is it? Doctor, what do you see?" Just great stuff. Edited September 7 by RazorbladeKiss87 1

I don't want to encourage anyone to ditch the only legit source of Exo-Squad, but if Columbo is all you care about than you have options. 1
BloodyChamp Posted September 7 Posted September 7 Columbo isn’t my favorite show but I watch it whenever it comes on because it was a pleasant sign of the times. There’s 1 episode in particular that is so bad, yet so accurate if you were there. It was 1 of the “new” ones that people agree weren’t as good. 1

But if course, Homicide: Life on the Streets just dropped so until I binge that, Peacock remains. I don't remember Exo-Squad but I just added it to my stuff on there. 2 1
RazorbladeKiss87 Posted September 7 Posted September 7 AEW is now pandering to TikTok with the Costco guys. I'm sorry TK, but that's not for the sickos.

Father who is exploiting his son in unpaid (at first, now I don't know) unfunny promotion for Costco. I don't use TikTok either but saw a clickbaity YouTube about them and have had some of their stuff shared in the work group chat for roasting. The dad's a former indie wrestler. They're getting backlash so the timing is weird for AEW to feature them. 1
Cobra Commander Posted September 8 Posted September 8 how many wrestling recruitment letters do you think Scott Steiner's son is up to by now? https://jaxstatesports.com/sports/football/roster/brock-rechsteiner/6204 I'm guessing that 6'2/225 could be dialed up a little in wrestling height/weight. A white wide receiver from Jacksonville State is probably gonna be looking for his next pursuit after wrestling. So, he can become the handsome member of his wrestling family if he wants to.
Octopus Posted September 8 Posted September 8 I believe WWE’s move when they had moments like Punk’s return to use footage of and promote TikTok streamers’ reactions to their moments was pretty brilliant. They were all super excited to be on WWE, now love the company so much more, and will overreact even harder to try and get on the show again. It’s basically free extra promotion.
