Of course the no hitter will probably get overlooked due to people screaming about Anthony Rendon hitting lefty (the Rays put a position player on the mound so Rendon batted lefty… and hit a HR)

And we have our first COVID postponement of the year (oh what? You thought this wouldn't happen?)

White Sox at Guardians is off due to several positives on Cleveland's side

Terry Francona is one of the positives. Bench coach DeMarlo Hale was supposed to take over but he tested positive too.

It appears the reason the game was postponed was because the results came in so late, Cleveland doesn't have the ability to replace all the players necessary today.

Christian Yelich just became only the 5th player since 1901 to hit for 3 cycles.

EDIT -- Also notable, all three of Yelich's cycles have come against the Reds.

What is also wild is 2 of the 5 are current players (Yelich and Trea Turner) and a 3rd could probably still be playing (Adrian Beltre)

Then you have to go back to like 1920 for the other 2

Something I just noticed

The entire NL West is over .500

The NL East and Central COMBINED have 3 teams over .500 (And one of those teams - the Cardinals - has lost 3 straight and another of those teams - the Brewers - just lost 2 out of 3 to the Reds)

well, bear in mind the West largely hasn't started playing itself yet.

but it is a fun little flex for the time being (NL Best, toughest division in baseball, etc)

DBacks seem to be better than a lot of folks would've figured they'd be

Oh it’s not gonna last more than a few more days. The Rockies are starting to crater. They are only 2 games over .500 and had a run differential of -23

Bryce Harper has a small UCL tear and will not be able to throw for 4 weeks

However, he can still swing a bat so he will continue to DH for the Phillies

This happened a couple of days ago but Padres manager Bob Melvin is on a leave of absence as he is having prostate surgery.

Melvin said he doesn't believe it is cancer but doctor's won't know until after the surgery. The team said that it doesn't expect to have updates until next week.

Bench coach Ryan Christenson will be the interim manager.

Melvin is hoping to only have to miss the first 6 games of the Padres 9 game road trip that starts tonight

Turns out there was an update and that Melvin was right

Padres announced that no cancer was found during Melvin's surgery and he (Melvin) is resting at home

Mariners finally put Kelenic out of his misery and sent him down to AAA.

From the things that were definitely gonna happen category

Shohei Ohtani became the 3rd Japanese born player to hit 100 HRs in the majors

He also became only the 2nd player ever - besides Babe Ruth - to have 100 HRs (as hitter) and 250 Ks (as pitcher)

Reds pitchers Hunter Greene and Art Warren just threw a combined no hitter

Only problem is the Reds lost 1-0 to the Pirates

The Reds could have gotten a win if only their fans would pony up some dough.

As a reminder - neither pitcher will be credited with a no hitter since the team lost

And the Reds became the 6th team in MLB history to lose despite not allowing a hit

Last time that happened was 2008 when Jered Weaver and Jose Arredondo of the Angels "no-hit" the Dodgers

And another quirky stat - Hunter Greene became the first pitcher since 1992 to throw 7 hitless innings and take the loss

Former pitcher David West passed away from brain cancer this weekend at the age of 57

This had lead to another round of "Veteran Stadium gave everyone brain cancer!" internet fodder (partly fueled by former Phillies like Dickie Noles and Larry Bowa) since West is the 6th Phillie since 2003 to pass away due to glioblastoma (brain cancer)

Now more likely if there is any link it would be more attributed to Astroturf than one specific stadium (especially since some of the Phillies on the list were only there a year or so). Looking at Astroturf would add names like Gary Carter, Dan Quisenberry, Dick Howser and Bobby Mercer.

All this being said - more likely it is the simple notion that a lot of fucking people played baseball and a lot of fucking people get cancer

yeah, i've heard the same sort of theory involving various Royals and astroturf and cancer

then there's guys like Ken Brett who spent a year at the Vet, 2 years at Three Rivers, and 2 years at Royals Stadium, while also playing for 7 other teams, and then died of brain cancer at 55.

The Cavan Biggio dream is dead (for now) as the Jays have sent him down to AAA

It wouldn't surprise me if there's a link but, like Rippa said, it could also just be the law of averages.

Matt Harvey was just given 60 games for his 'violation of the joint drug agreement.'  (Harvey is in Baltimore's MiLB system.)

Which, I think is code for giving drugs to Tyler Skaggs.

That is exactly why he was suspended

Suspension is retroactive to April 29 when he first signed with the Orioles. He is eligible to return in late June

Based on their statements - Baltimore was aware (for the most part) of what the suspension would be before they signed him

The biggest positive surprise in the Jays season so far has undoubtably been Espinal learning how to hit. Dude was always a great defender but now he's actually looking like an every day player.

Not that I am shedding any tears for them but when things go bad for the Red Sox - they go bad quickly

Nathan Eovaldi became just the 3rd pitcher in history to give up 5 home runs in an inning

It was the first time Houston hit 5 HRs in an inning and the first time Boston allowed 5 HRs in an inning

The Red Sox are currently 14-22 and only a half game ahead of the Orioles

That's incredible.  How have they not given up 5 in an inning before now?
