MLB 2023 - 1ST HALF

Jazz Chisholm strained his obliques over the weekend and is probably going on the IL (again).   As a result, Miami is promoting CF Dane Myers from the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.

He's been hitting an inhuman .448 there.

Dane Myers hit .358 in 280 PAs in his final season at Rice in 2017 while pitching 54 innings. He pitched in the Tigers minor league system from 2017 to 2019 before switching back to hitting in 2021. So sort of the reverse of the people who switch to pitching, instead he switched away from pitching

Mike Trout is hurt… again

He injured his wrist on a swing and then said after the game “it doesn’t feel great”

He is hoping it is “just” a sprained wrist

Trout officially has a left hamate fracture

Timeline for said injury is usually 6 to 8 weeks

And now Ohtani is hurt

He left yesterday's game early due to a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand.

He was getting lit up including giving up back to back home runs for the first time in his career

It is yet to be determined how it will affect his ability to DH but he did say that he probably will not pitch in the All Star game

(Anthony Rendon is also hurt again but that is pretty much par for the course now)

Clayton Kershaw is on the IL as well. Given his history, it could be legit but it sure feels like a "get out of the ASG" IL visit.

He has a bible study that night.

Siri, add Clayton Kershaw to my prayer list.

Marlins in the top wild card spot.  Hell, I dunno... this might be one of those special seasons.   But here is the living embodiment of "Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good..."

You just know something bad's gonna happen to the Cards as soon as he double clutches a throw he's made roughly 60,000 times in his life.

What's particularly nutty is the Marlins this year are 1-9 against the Braves (with a -54 run diff to boot), and 50-28 against everyone else. I know baseball loves their whacky stats but that has to be a record difference of some sort.

Couple of notable pitching returns today

Carlos Rodon will make his first start as a Yankee

Meanwhile, the Jays are all "Fuck it - he has figured it out" and are starting Alex Manoah

It wouldn't totally shock me if the Jays made an impulse trade of Manoah sometime in the next few months and if there's any team interested in giving the Jays a rental for the cost of Manoah, they'd like to see how Manoah pitches in the majors instead of in the minors.

of course that sort of thing would have to work out for the Jays to avoid being an infamous trade

the Marlins demoted Eury Perez (2.36 ERA/185 ERA+ in 11 starts/53 1/3 innings) due to reasons that may involve "limiting innings"

We're also around the time of year where some pitchers get demoted purely because they're not pitching until after the break (although you have to keep pitchers in the minors for 2 weeks if nobody gets hurt, so this is pretty late to do that sort of thing)

First combined no-no in Detroit history.

Elly de la Cruz is a fucking cheat code.

Stole Second. Then he stole third and home, ON THE SAME PLAY.

(no throw on the steal to third, as he had a great jump and the third baseman couldn't get over in time, then when the catcher threw it back to the pitcher, the pitcher was frustrated and turned his back as he was walking around the mound. De la Cruz then said "DON'T MIND IF I DO!" and stole home before the pitcher could throw it

Just coming to post it

Kudos to Fox Sports for cutting off the clip before showing a halfway decent angle of the steal of home.  Good grief.

In other news yesterday, the draft happened, and the Marlins picked a kid.   No, literally, this guy looks like he's 13.  (And can apparently throw @ 100mph.)
