I was tracking the viewers on the ABEMA (Japan only) livestream of the game. Started at 640,000 for Ohtani's first at bat and by the end of the game it was at over 5 million.

I was in Japan when LA was playing the Padres and Japanese news coverage of the game was hilarious. It was basically San Diego vs. One Guy. He's everywhere there.

When Japanese news covers the daily MLB scores it is mainly to cover what the Japanese players did that day. They might flash the scores of the other games but really, no one cares. I'm used to that though because it's similar to what Hawaii newscasts used to do when local athletes went pro.
