Motor City is now the Broke Ass City

Recommended Posts

I was actually just in Detroit last week for the first part of a road trip. That place was nuts. The two-minute drive from the ballpark to the two Coney's (diner-type places) everyone goes nuts for was really frightening. It's such a shame. The city has a lot of grandeur and beauty hidden behind the bleakness.

I live about 10 minutes from the city and outside of the downtown area it's a terrifying dump. I don't think there is anything that can save it or turn it around and I don't think it's going to make a comeback anytime soon.  It's a festering pile of shit mixed with some Beyond Thunderdome level blight.  It's awful.

Who would have ever guessed the subplot to Robocop would actually come true.

I lived in Michigan for quite some time.  There is a casino in Detroit where the OCP building should be.  It is only a matter of time.

Thanks to google earth I can see what you mean. A lot of it reminds me of Philadelphia/Camden. With the crumbling infrastructure and buildings that still have a 1940s/1950s look as if they haven't had any new tenants in that time.

Awhile back they did some really nice "urban renewal" by the riverfront, with the new baseball and football stadiums, you have the Joe, etc.  And just outside that is some really amazing old churches and stuff.  And that's like a 10 block radius that is just beautiful.  Then you go to the 11th block and....

Same thing happened in Camden on the waterfront. An aquarium, a concert hall and a baseball field. It didn't really spread though. The baseball field in particular is really nice. It averages 4,000 fans a game which for a minor league team with no major league affiliation that is really remarkable.

Camden may be the worst city in the country for all of the issues going on with it. It's really sad to see and I'm not really sure there's anything you can do about it without throwing horrifying amounts of money at it.

This. I lived one town over from Camden for 15, 16 years. It was always nerve-wracking, to say the least, when I had to go there for whatever reason.

So is a city declaring bankruptcy worse than laying off an entire police force? As far as I know, Camden hasn't filed for bankruptcy...yet.

For a moment there, I thought you meant a cadre of wise-gesturing mimes had plundered the cities coffers on a daring night-time raid by Gallic Rooster-back. That's apparently France's national animal.

They actually referred to the renovated parts of the Motor City as New Detroit and the older parts of the inner city as Old Detroit today on an NPR interview with a professor from Wayne State.

Man, Robocop will be here any day, won't he?
