WRESTLER OF THE DAY: BILLY KIDMAN

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

At the Jeff Peterson Cup 2006 in his match on Day 2 for some reason the people sitting next to me in the front row all decided to get up and leave during Kidman's match then return to their seat once the match was over. We heard from a wrestler after the show once Billy got back to the locker he grabbed his stuff got in his car and went home very pissed off.

I think Kidman's definitely become underrated over the last few years. The IWC used to love him back when Nitro was on the air, but a lackluster WWE career and being on the butt-end of so many running jokes and online memes haven't helped his reputation. Which is too bad, cuz until he started putting too much weight onto his tiny frame, Kidman was really damn good. All people seem to remember now is botched SSPs and countered powerbombs, but Kidman was one of those rare Good Cruiserweights who didn't make everything look so damn effortless out there. He sold more than most high flyers, and did a damn fine job of conveying just how difficult it was in an athletic sense to be pulling off all those high-risk moves.

Sadly there's practically nothing from his career on Youtube, but ol' Dailymotion has a few bits and pieces. Here's him and Rey (a sadly forgotten duo who had great chemistry) teaming against Juvy and Psicosis on some random Nitro, complete with a prematch vignette with Eddy G hosting an LWO party (which looks, um, rather incredibly racist in hindsight):

Kidman tears shit up with a debuting Mikey Whipwreck:

part 2

And this might have honestly been Hogan's MOTY for 2000, if not his last really good match in his entire WCW tenure:

Sorry for the shitty DM video quality, but it's all I could find.

There was an awesome Kidman/Rey vs. Eddie/Juvi match from Nitro that the IWC went nuts over at the time. I may have voted it as the Best Match of the 90s, even.

EDIT: From the 12/28/98 episode of Nitro. I need to rewatch this ASAP.

Looked around, couldn't find it. Tarnation , dadgummit, and fiddlesticks. Oh well, here's a couple more Billy/Eddie singles matches as a consolation prize:

I have it on VHS somewhere but does anyone have a link to a match he had vs Liger on WCW Pro? It had to have been around 96

I couldn't find any copies of the whole thing, but on the WWE website here they've got the last two or three minutes of the match. And it's really weird just how uncannily the young Kidman looked exactly like modern-day Chuck Taylor.

Kidman beat Hogan, brother.  Who says the Hulkster is a selfish jerk who never puts anyone over and intentionally undermines the heat of all other wrestlers in any given promotion who threaten his position?

People who don't know he put Kidman over, that's who.  Whatcha gonna do?
