Even at 4 teams, we've already found ourselves in a situation where the SEC title game - usually one of the biggest games of the year - simply doesn't matter. And it has nothing to do with the mismatched teams. It's not the first time we've had a mismatch in this game. But this time there's not even the spoiler factor to draw people in like there usually would be. "What happens if the underdog pulls the upset?" Jenalysis Posted December 4, 2016 Share Posted December 4, 2016 I'd like the NCAA just reorganize the conferences: have 7 conferences of 10, and allow ND+ the Service Academies to be independent, with a guarantee in if they're top 8 and best independent, otherwise that spot goes to best non-conference champion, and an 8team playoff: The conferences would be rejiggered to bring back old rivalries, Maryland would go back to the ACC, Missouri to the Big 8, etc. Utah and BYU get thrown into the old Big 8 to bring it to 10 the SWC would return A lot of the old Big East schools would be back in a conference, alongside some misfits like South Carolina No more conf championships. 1st round of playoffs would be 1st weekend of Dec. Semifinals would be NYD, Final would be first Monday after 1/7. Everyone else goes to FBS: 8 teams in this scenario would still matter because the conf championships would be the only guaranteed way in outside of the wild-card spot, and even there a Navy or a Notre Dame sneaking into the top 8 could mean no wild card. Assuming Colorado drops out of the top ten, USC will be the only non-B1G top ten team to beat another top ten come tomorrow's rankings. Unrelated: it's true, the SEC title game was all but meaningless. But on the flip side, without the CFP, the PAC-12 game would have been pretty much meaningless with virtually no shot of Washington moving up (and hell, under the BCS it's entirely possible Bama would have still been safe today as a top two) The ACC game would have been all but meaningless, since Bama was an overwhelming favorite and Clemson is behind Ohio and Virgina Tech doesn't provide much juice to move up. The B1G game would be mostly unchanged, with the same potential "Penn State beat Ohio and won the conference, why aren't they getting the shot?" The Big XII would still be meaningless. The reason the SEC game didn't matter today is because it's become a one team league. Florida, Tennessee, Auburn and LSU have fallen off. TAMU is a fraud. The Mississippi teams have stopped their flirtation with being good. Bama meanwhile might be literally the best college team of the 21st century to date. That's why the game didn't matter today, not the playoffs. It made two other games matter more than they would've. That's a more than fair trade. A close game does them no favors. Although Clemson isn't helping themselves against Virginia Tech.
