Two questions. 1) to those who think this was all for ratings why not then put tOSU vs Oregan in the Rose to keep that tradition? 2) do the people who claim this was the commetie why of telling the big 12 to get two more realy think the out come would have been diffrent if yesterday's KSU/Baylor game had been a championship game?

Big 12 commish:  We need to add 2 teams next year.

Secretary:  Boise State on line 1 sir and Marshall on line 2.

Big 12 commish:  Put Boise on hold.  Marshall, you want in?  Sure, no problem, you are in.  Thanks, bye.  We just need one more.

Secretary:  Boise on line 1.

Big 12 commish:  Just need one more team.  Maybe Colorado St.  No, they just lost their coach.  Maybe I can entice BYU if I let them keep their network.

Secretary:  Boise on line 1.

Big 12 commish:  Get me BYU on line 2.

My joke meter is broken, does this imply the Big 12 thinks they are better than Boise, or that Boise is better than the Big 12?

I think it implies that they want to add to cream puffs(or as close to it as possible) and not a team that could fuck some of their team up. . .

Spot on.  Does any big 5 conference want Boise?  The last thing anyone wants is Boise to come in and win the conference title the first year.

Nobody is scared of Boise winning their conference. No major conference will give Boise the time of day because they bring nothing to the table in terms of TV markets. Nobody is desperate to add Idaho to their footprint.

The other problem with Boise is that they bring less than nothing to the table in sports other than football.

They've proven time and again that not only can they hang with major conference teams, but they can beat them. Should they join a major conference there would be growing pains, no doubt. But, it's naive to think that the major conferences don't look at Boise and say, "Is it really worth bringing them in and possibly knocking off some of our already established top teams?" That's not to say the lack of a TV market doesn't play a role, it's probably the main factor, but there's also a healthy amount of not wanting to lose face to a team that the casual fan still, misguidedly so, thinks of as inferior to every major conference team.

Nobody cares about any of that. It's all about the additional revenue you can bring to the table. If fear of the usurper could keep a moneymaker out of the major conferences, then Utah and TCU wouldn't be where they are today. But both brought something of value to their respective conferences. Utah expanded the Pac-12's footprint and brought in the Salt Lake City market. TCU helped the Big 12 compensate for the loss of A&M in Texas. Boise brings nothing to the table. Plain and simple.

Believe me, as a Southern Miss fan, I'm well aware of the fairytales that fans of quality mid-major programs tell themselves to make themselves feel better about their lot in the grand scheme of things. But its simply not true.

But here is the thing, Southern Miss is not a threat to beat anybody?  Boise is in major bowl talk every year and regularly ranked in the Top 25.

While they may not bring lots of tv viewers they do bring a lot of national recognition.

Put another way, they wouldn't expand the amount of money the Big XII (or PAC 12) brings in enough to offset the extra slice being taken out of the pie.

Although the added money of a conference title game might for the Big XII, but they'd still much rather have a team that makes the league more valuable in and of itself.
