MLB OFFSEASON 2023

Usually teams have a succession plan in place - especially in a case like this were Seidler had been sick for long enough to have one developed (and it is almost always a family member)

The longer term question is does the family want to continue running the team

Still befuddled about the Guardians designating Cal Quantrill for assignment. He was hurt a lot, but he came back strong at the end of the season.

The Guardians are about to get fucked by the collapse of their RSN deal (Diamond is reportedly about to drop Cleveland and the Rangers)

In his press conference yesterday - Chris Antonetti flat out admitted this is part of the reason the move was made because Quantrill's projected arb number (based on the standard formula is $6.5 million) was more than their new budget can handle

Owners have officially approved the relocation of the A's franchise to Las Vegas.

Welcome to the world, the Las Vegas Athletics.

I'm going to be calling this team the Las Vegas Tagalongs (No offense to the delicious chocolaty peanut butter cookies), since they're just copying what the Raiders have been doing for decades.

Oakland's mayor says that the city will only allow the As to play in the city from 2025-2027 if MLB agrees to...

1) The Athletics name stays in Oakland

2) Oakland is guaranteed an expansion team

This clearly appears to be a non-starter because Manfred already said with a straight face "we don't know if we are going to have expansion"

Speaking of Manfred - he announced that Atlanta will host the 2025 All Star Game

He also acknowledged that nothing has changed since 2021 and basically tried to hand wave everything

They're gonna draw less than 2,000 per game aren't they?

Clearly the solution for Oakland is to sign an aging catcher, a power hitting voodoo practitioner, an ex-con who can throw 100mph and someone who has the sprint speed of Usain Bolt. That'll fix everything.

we got a trade!

the Braves traded 5 players for Aaron Bummer

Its kinda more than just "5 players" since the White Sox are getting Mike Soroka and Nicky Lopez as 2 of the 5

However - it is so very much a "here a bunch of guys we were gonna non-tender"

He had a 6.79 ERA last year.  Good grief.

Bummer, 2022: .384 BABIP-against, .734 OPS-against, ERA of 2.36

Bummer, 2023: .340 BABIP-against, .699 OPS-against, ERA of 6.79

This might take way too much of a dive into the 2023 Chicago White Sox but I wonder how much of the White Sox being run by idiots shows up in Bummer's numbers (like, for example, how many runs were charged to Bummer because of the other relievers)

Meanwhile in baseball news:

Scott Barlow traded (SDP to CLE)

Brandon Woodruff non-tendered

Nick Anderson traded (ATL to KC)

Mike Wright traded (also ATL to KC but not in the same deal as Nick Anderson) for Jackson Kowar

That's... crazy. .699 OPS is outstanding.

It appears the first FA shoe has dropped

Aaron Nola is staying in Philly

7 years, $172 million

EDIT - Deal has no opts and contains a full no trade

Already 30 years old, 2 of last 3 years under 100 ERA+ - sure! Pay the guy $25m a year for the next 7.
