Cobra Commander Posted March 18, 2023 Posted March 18, 2023 USA with an early lead on Venezuela in the top of the first inning. The first 5 batters got hits and 3 runs scored.
Cobra Commander Posted March 18, 2023 Posted March 18, 2023 3 batters into the bottom of the first and the score is now USA 3/Venezuela 2.
Cobra Commander Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 USA up 5-2 in the top of the 5th. We inch closer to a Sunday night game 60+ years in the making.
Cobra Commander Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 nevermind, Venezuela is gonna advance because dumbass Mark DeRosa thinks Daniel Bard is a good reliever 1
Cobra Commander Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 "Mr. DeRosa, what are your qualifications to manage?" "I can be a moron and get saved by my players"
cubbymark Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 Case in point: Miami could burn tomorrow night: USA/Cuba. 1
Cobra Commander Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 At least they put Marlins Park in a part of Miami used to hosting huge events (for the unfamiliar, Marlins Park was built on the site of the Orange Bowl)
Cobra Commander Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 the World Baseball Classic has had some of the best booking in sports so far 1

Kevin Wilson Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 I am impressed with the sizes of the crowds and how into it the fans are. I think this kind of event is always at risk of looking like an exhibition to those in the US, especially this close to the regular season, but clearly the fans are really into it and the players are as well. I know it makes MLB fans nervous, and the injury to Diaz shows why, but anything that gets fans excited about international games I think is a good thing for the sport. 3

It’s not as well booked as the NFL (what is?), but probably ahead of WWE, AEW, most celebrity bake-offs, and pickleball. 1
Tarheel Moneghetti Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 Jose Altuve fractured his thumb last night and will need surgery. Astro’s aren’t sure how long he’ll be out. Oh, well, letting the pros play was fun while it lasted.

Cobra Commander Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 as a Royals fan, I remember that Salvador Perez once tore his MCL while carrying luggage in-between Spring Training and Opening Day, which only kept him out for like 3 weeks
Cobra Commander Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 nobody told Livan to wear a suit. Meanwhile, Trea Turner hits another homer and USA is up 3-1

MLB has the best weird/dumb injuries.
SirFozzie Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 Cuba forgot about Dre..er.. Trea Seriously at this point, they should just redo the Hulk Hogan "Real American" video with Trea Turner hilights 1

Cobra Commander Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 (edited) Despaigne and the Cuban pitching coach (both of whom are national legends) both appear to be eating well. But maybe solid red makes people look even larger. Unfortunate that Despaigne hasn't played in MLB because at the very least, it'd be fun. Like the time that Byung-ho Park spent a year on the Minnesota Twins. USA up 5-1. Top of the 4th, and a fan in the front row unleashed an anti-regime protest sign directly on the hard cam ("Abajo la dictadura", "down with the dictatorship") Edited March 20, 2023 by Cobra Commander
cubbymark Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 T minus until some Cardinal fans start bitching about Nolan Arenado. Although the look on his face is he’s pissed they took him out of the game.
Cobra Commander Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 Always difficult to find openings to empty the bench while leading in an elimination game. Cuba has 3 years until the next WBC to find some way to make nice with the Cuban pitchers who aren't on this roster. Unless they can pull off a 3 year plan to develop pitching that won't immediately leave the country. Meanwhile first fan runs onto the field in the top of the 6th inning. Is that earlier or later than expected? 1
cubbymark Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 (edited) The pitching on the island that hasn’t already defected is in rough shape. Very few guys can throw 90+ and their control isn’t the best. Cuban leagues haven’t even played night games since before COVID because the current economic situation. The inaugural Cuban Elite League was kind of a disaster: the league started late because the teams didn’t get their uniforms on time. Fan interest wasn’t that great either. edit: is USA going to mercy rule Cuba? Edited March 20, 2023 by cubbymark
