Yeah, I'm not in the business of policing my kid too much because she's pretty grounded and way too mature for her own good.  I punish her when she's misbehaving or disrespectful; not when she's being curious or doing what normal kids do.

With her mom having another child as a single parent and then having to fight lymphoma again, my daughter has had to grow up very quickly.  I want her to at least try to enjoy being a teen because adulthood comes way too fast.

Part of me would be secretly thrilled if she read Rawhead Rex, though.  I would do my best to pretend to be appalled.

It's just a short trip from that to "Daddy, what's a header?" ;-)

The school my girls go to has thing called "Talent Tuesday" basically a mini talent show during lunch period. My kindergartender decided she wanted to sing a song for Talent Tuesday. What song? Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away) by Motley Crue. Her principal now thinks she's the coolest kid in Kindergarten.

I don’t know if this will help, but I get the same way. I think all, or most, do. Take comfort in knowing that you will grow along with the baby and learn on the job. What seems overwhelming and scary now will become matter of fact soon enough.

Janice: [dumbfounded] The Milker?
Me: No you know what I mean.. the um.. THEBREAST PUMP! That's it!

Good luck, man.  You're in for an awesome, tiring, frustrating, rewarding, and awesome ride.  I remember those "gotta wake up every two hours...I'll feed the baby while you pump reserves" all-nighters like it was yesterday and not over three years ago.

You will never have enough diapers or baby wipes.  Just saying.

Always Accept Diapers As Presents.

Also, get yourself a baby wipe warmer.  Best invention since the electric blanket.

Last night my 3 year old woke me up at 2 am and asked me to stay in his room and protect him.

Today he explained that his mom protects him from lions tigers and bears.  I protect him from ants bumblebees butterflies and ladybugs.

The Diaper Genie is another godsend!

Diaper Genie may be the best invention since the robot vacuum, but you need to make sure you empty that fucking thing as often as directed.   Otherwise the smell from over-accumulating diapers could kill everyone in the house.

When my custody weekends started up on the regular, my daughter was five years old.  I prepped an air mattress in my one bedroom apartment, but she never slept in it.

She would ask to stay in my room and she'd crash on the floor in my sleeping bag and she'd ask me to sleep with my wooden training sword from kenjutsu class close by, just in case I had to defend the house from the odd feral cat or loud drunken neighbor.

When she turned seven, she wanted her a wooden training sword like mine "just in case I needed help," so I bought her one.  She's fifteen now and she still keeps the boken under her bed in her room in our new house.

I was one proud papa yesterday. My kids' school does nine-week award ceremonies. Basically recognizing academic and personal achievments that kids accomplish every quarter. My kindergartener always gets a bunch of them for her progress in reading and math.

Well, they each got a very special one yesterday. My 2nd grader got a "Most Improved" award for all the progress she's made socially. She's very shy and has terrible social anxiety. But, she has really blossomed a lot this year. When she started at the school in October, it was a struggle for her to get anything out without a lot of prompting. But, now she participates regulary in class discussions and always has a lot to say.  My Kindergartener got her usual truckload, but also got what they call a "Character Award" (basically for being a good person) and was the only one in her grade to get it.

Spoiler: All of the great Kindergarten/Elementary awards go to hell when the kid gets to high school. I think we have some sense of what went wrong for the next one at least, but some of it is just endemic to the time where I think every kid in his school is in some sort of therapy.

Kid had his first real Easter this morning. That is, he's 3 1/2 and now understands what is happening and is totally in to it. Anyway, I put clues (and jelly beans) in plastic eggs in the house. He opened the eggs and read the clue all by himself to find where the next egg was until he was lead to his basket of goodies. At the end, as he was looking at his basket and his new Teen Titans GO! Robin figure and ship, he looked up at me and said ".....are you the Easter Bunny?"

Kid is too smart for me and way too quick at figuring things out.

The flipside to what I said is that the 5 year old watched a bunch of Looney Toons yesterday, a random sampling on TV while we were cooking ham or whatever, and she loved both Duck Amuck and Porky in Wackyland far, far more than the rest so parenting has its ups and downs, right?

Oh. When you said Porky yesterday, I thought you meant Super Porky. :)

If you're a parent of a toddler who likes to watch YouTube and are sick of the toy unboxing and Elsa and Blippi videos, here is something my son and I have been doing for just over a year now.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCymwxa-llU0Q2qwGdd6SLDA/videos

It's his own YouTube channel that is mostly alphabet related, but there are other videos when we do a special trip somewhere like to SkyZone or Michigan Adventure or the Animal Farm. We started making short videos of him playing with his alphabet toys awhile back, and as soon as he saw himself on YouTube he wanted to keep making more and more. We never make a video unless he asks first, and he usually "directs" the videos telling me what he wants to do and how to do it. I try to keep the videos a decent length and try to make them at least somewhat interesting. I try to make them somewhat tolerable for any adults that may also be watching, but am interested to see if other kids actually enjoy watching these things.

Anyway, check it out if you are in search of an alternative to some of the other toddler age YouTube channels out there and if you like it "Don't Forget to Subscribe!" :)

10 month old managed a couple of steps last night. They were angry last steps in order to reach her mother, so no idea if she'll replicate them for the next two months, but they were definitely steps.

They could be the start of the real thing. My middle nephew started walking at that age to keep up with his brother.
