2020 HORROR MOVIES

Dolfan in NYC

Recommended Posts

We have the worst time trying to coordinate three hosts, I can't imagine the nightmares guests would bring to our producer.  But if you good folks would like to check it out it's Another Miserable Podcast on Youtube and pretty much every podcast platform including Spotify.

As for Color Out of Space, I'd hold off on buying it unless you really want to own it- the Blu Ray comes with a Shudder membership promo, which means that it'll probably be streaming on there soon.

Also, it'll go up on a streaming service because I bought it and this happens to me every single time I buy a horror movie no matter how old or obscure it is.

I loved 3 From Hell. Probably my favorite Zombie since Rejects. As sorely as Haig is mostly missed, Richard Brakes is a fine replacement and I laughed anytime the name Midnight Wolfman was said out loud. It’s not the slapped together disjointed mess I would have guessed, and the “vintage” file footage is some of the most authentic looking I’ve seen in a movie of this nature. I thought with a low budget we’d lose the breezy fun soundtrack that DR had, but Zombie delivers (Leather Tuscadero herself, Suzi Quatro?!!) I think Manhunter owns In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, but I wasn’t mad about its inclusion.

Sheri Moon is delightful here; crazier from her time in prison, but also warier, with less patience for playing the cutesy bait and more inclined to be ruggedly terrifying like her male counterparts. Mosely delivers once again; Otis slips between Mansonesque grandiose statements and a matter-of-fact deadpan delivery with ease, so we’re never sure if he really believes he’s an agent of the Devil or just a run of the mill hellbilly.

I think what makes this and DR work so well is the relationships between the three.  Zombie has created a dynamic where people who claim to have zero regard for social norms, show complete indifference to human life, and return pleas for empathy with contempt nevertheless reveal a deep loyalty to and protectiveness over each other. Midnight Wolfman is a small potatoes criminal compared to the House of 1,000 Corpses crew, but he still sticks his neck out for Otis. Otis knows Baby’s gone off the deep end in prison and she’s going to sacrifice the minimal amount of cover they use to hide out in the first place, but he sticks by her. In a world where Baby’s job is to be taken lightly to get her victims’ guard down, even her brothers don’t seen to take her seriously, yet she comes to their rescue, albeit with a chip on her shoulder. They don’t deserve our sympathy, or even a term like antihero. Yet watching them navigate a world that they turn upside down with the most evil deeds, only to be vaguely confused why everyone’s harshing their good vibes, is compelling and I daresay charming in an alarming way.

I probably already mentioned this but I loved the relationship between Moseley and Brake. That bit in the hotel where Brake bullshits about getting into porn actually breaks the ice with Otis who seems impossible to have happen... unless he's killing someone or on drugs.

Hammer House of Horror is getting a marathon run on Comet tomorrow. Take in mind also that it's Friday the 13th and there is probably gonna be a lot of Jason and other stuff on every other channel.

I know everyone hates it when I harp on Tubi, but the entire HHofH run is on Tubi.  I love that show.

I don't have to look at the schedules, but I'm sure that both El Rey and Syfy will have Friday the 13th movies on all weekend.

If Syfy really wanted to impress me, they'd have a Friday The 13th:  The Series marathon on all day.

Also the Cube-esque sci-fi horror / thriller, The Platform, should be debuting on Netflix very soon (March 20th).

The Series used to be on Comet so I dunno why they just don't do it instead. It's not like somebody else was clamoring for those rights.

Tubi, incidentally, was just downloaded on my Prime for free so you can get it on there too. I used it to watch a pretty badass doc entitled Eurocrime! about the politziotesschi films of the '70s and '80s, featuring Fred the Hammer, John Saxon before he passed, Franco Nero, Henry Silva before he passed, etc. needless to say it should be on your hitlist @J.T.

Tubi bailed me out from paying for both live action Scooby Doo movies when my daughter found out they existed. Still ended up buying the first season of A Pup Named Scooby Doo on Comcast because I’m a sucker, but what’re you gonna do, we’ve had worse phases than Mystery Incorporated.

Friday the 13th The Series was Supernatural before Supernatural was cool.

Also, Robey and her magnificent 80's hair.

So, I wanna sign up for a streaming service that has Full Moon films (eg Puppetmaster, Castle Freak). I know they have their own streaming service and maybe their own channel in Prime, but is there another option that has those films plus other horror titles?

Your best bet is probably to just get a monthly subscription to Full Moon and get through their stuff and then bail. Shudder has a much better selection overall, but I think they only have Castle Freak, maybe a couple of others. Most of the non-FM stuff on the Full Moon service seems to be cheapo horror comedy, like closer to Troma than Full Moon.

Woof. I just watched The Fly in its entirety, all the way through, without being on edited TV, ever. It feels like I just got side-swiped by a car. No wonder nobody ever really talks about it, because it's got a lot to unpack (like a dump truck worth) and digest. After you vomit on it first of course.

I just went back and checked my list from the greatest movies thing we did a couple of years ago; I had the Fly at #33. I probably saw it for the first time when I was 6 or 7, and I’ve watched it every couple of years ever since. I have no qualms saying it’s my favorite horror movie. Between seeing that, the Claude Rains Phantom of the Opera, Darkman, and Robocop all around the same time, I definitely developed a body horror fascination that exists to this day.

There is a lot going on. Fundamentally, it reminds us of the horror of living in a human body, which on its most attractive and highest functioning day is still weird and gross when you think about it for too long. Add the universal anxieties over aging and death, and then consider how Cronenberg’s own desire to portray a body in the throes of cancer intersected with HIV and AIDS increasingly entering the public consciousness at the time. It’s a lot before you even get to Geena Davis having to make a decision about her pregnancy.

It’s also tightly paced, Goldblum is pitch perfect and should have gotten an Oscar nod, and the practical effects are magnificent. And not in a nostalgia-tinged “things were better before CGI” way. They’re timeless and still work exactly as intended. Gosh, I love that movie.

Even surface level before you delve into it it's not just a sci-fi/horror film but a Love Story, and a very modern one: bad boyfriend, new infatuation, unwanted pregnancy, horrible breakup. Another thing that struck me is the very deadpan black humor in it which is an underrated characteristic of Cronenberg -- think the parasite falling on the old couple's see-through umbrella in Shivers, for example. Some of the comments Goldblum made about himself about his transformation had me rolling. But then, that's my kind of humor anyway.

So happy to have finally seen this completely.

Lionsgate has pulled Antebellum, Run, and Spiral from the release calendar in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Antebellum was set for release on April 24, Run was set for May 8, and Spiral was set for May 15.

Fox Searchlight / Disney is also postponing the release of Antlers.

On the recommendation of a German friend I watched Attack Of The Lederhosen Zombies. With its tongue planted firmly in cheek it goes for broke. Low budget and silly it's worth a look.

WHOA.

This is about the biggest lineup of free Youtube horror movies I've ever seen, and I don't know how they have the rights for some of these -- they have everything from popular stuff like Hellraiser and Day of the Dead to total obscurities like Lunch Meat. If you're looking for something you haven't seen before it might be here, so check it out.

If I may, I highly recommend going on there and watching The Night Brings Charlie (great underrated slasher), Tourist Trap (legendary fright fest), Rituals ('70s Deliverance-style with Hal Holbrook), and Eating Raoul (hilarious black comedy from the Bartel/Woronov team), just to name a few, on that list. There's also a fair amount of '80s sleaze and cheese comedy on that channel too. Me, I've got my eyes set on Clownhouse, The Slayer, Scalps, Night Life, and Evilspeak.

Oh, and Humanoids from the Deep and Prophecy would be an AWESOME "nature gone wild" double feature for someone, hint hint...

Funny you & driver should mention some of those films as Lederhosen Zombies is also on Showtime Networks and Tourist Trap just got added to Tubi's cult classics queue.

That channel has Scalps and Street Trash.

This should be fun!

Cursed Films is a five-part documentary series from writer/director Jay Cheel (How to Build a Time Machine) exploring the myths and legends behind some of Hollywood’s notoriously “cursed” horror film productions. From plane accidents and bombings during the making of The Omen, to the rumored use of real human skeletons on the set of Poltergeist, these stories are legendary… but what’s real and what’s myth?

Cursed Films recounts the horrifying events that haunted these productions through interviews with experts, witnesses and the cast, directors and producers who lived through them, including Richard Donner, Linda Blair, Michael Berryman, Lloyd Kaufman, Kane Hodder, Gary Sherman, Eileen Dietz, Mitch Horowitz. Were these films really cursed, as many believe, or just the victims of bad luck and bizarre circumstances? A Shudder Original Series. Also available on Shudder Canada and Shudder UK.

Stuart Gordon, best known as the filmmaker behind such cult classics as “Re-Animator” and “From Beyond,” has died, his family confirmed to Variety Tuesday night.

BB11FOho.img?h=450&w=799&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=

He was 72.

Although best known for his seminal work in independent horror, Gordon had a varied career that included founding the Organic Theater Company with his wife, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon. The Organic premiered such prominent works as David Mamet’s “Sexual Perversity in Chicago” and “Bleacher Bums,” which starred Dennis Franz and Joe Mantegna.

He was a co-creator of the “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” franchise, for which he shared a story credit, and produced the film’s sequel and directed an episode of the TV spin-off. In 2005, he directed a film adaptation of Mamet’s “Edmond,” starring William H. Macy. Other films include “Fortress,” “Castle Freak” and “King of the Ants.”
