Spring Training Opens 2/18/15

Dolfan in NYC

Assuming the Royals don't collapse, Toronto will now have the longest playoff drought in the majors (and I believe, pro sports in North America). I wonder what MLB team is next...I'm thinking it's Seattle.

Yup - Seattle is next after the Jays

The next longest in sports after the Jays are the Bills

Rangers plan on interviewing

Tim Bogar - current interim manager

Mike Maddux - current pitching coach

Steve Buechele - currently managing their AAA Team

Supposedly they will look outside the organization too but who knows

I know today is usually Black Monday in terms of firings...but I really don't think we're going to see any more managers shitcanned The only possibility is Fredi, but that decision will be made by the new GM, and since the bozos hiring the new GM love Fredi...nope.

Well technically - since Cashman's contract is up, the Yanks COULD get a new GM and new GM could not want Girardi as manager.

This won't happen and if it did it wouldn't happen today.

Other than that... yeah

I mean since Gardenhire has one more year left, I figure Minnesota will just ride that out.

Maybe Ryne Sandberg since everyone supposedly hates him

Yeah, totally did not see the Gardy thing coming.  But it makes some sense in that the Twins are getting some pieces together (notably Sano and Buxton) to POSSIBLY contend in 2-3 years - hey, don't laugh, it's the AL Central, it doesn't take much to contend.  So I guess hiring someone younger to deal with the kids coming up might be a good thing for the Twins.

No idea what reputation Gardy has with dealing with the kids at this point.  But he turns 57 next month....and there seemed to be some rumbling this year that Molitor was getting primed to take over.  So maybe...fuck, I don't know.

Of course, Rippa states Gardy has another year on his contract.  So god knows.

I dunno.  Looking at how the Yanks looked toward the end of that injury ravaged year, knowing how much they're on the hook for with CC, Tex, A-Rod, Beltran, and Ellsbury, the shambles the current infield looks to be, the outfield not looking much better unless everyone's healthy, and how un-stocked the farm is, I'm almost ok with getting a new GM, but then again, its not like there's any GM out there that sets the world on fire as a great choice.

But there are some fucking HUGE holes to fill in the Bronx. We're not quite at 80's level of futility yet, but next year could be the real turning point.

Sandberg is a good manager.  His problem is guys like Montgomery and Amaro micro-managing the team from the press box.

When he benched Howard and started to play Ruf he was told to play Howard.  Then he was told to play him again in September so that Howard could get 100 RBI's and look more attractive for a potential trade this offseason.

Hard to manage the team properly when the guys above you undermine everything you do.

I feel bad for Sandberg. Looking back, I think the Cubs did him a favor, on repeated occasions, by not considering him anytime the manager position opened up. It would have been as bad or worse of a situation than the one he's in now.

It appears Ryno wanted to manage so badly though, that he didn't care about the shit-storm he would be taking over. At least now he can say he has experience at the major league level, but his next job as manager, if that's what he wants and if the Phillies bid him farewell next year, is just going to be in another perilous role unless some team on the cusp of contending has a GM whose philosophy closely matches Ryno's.

A source of mine said that Sandberg was pissed off coming into this season because he was under the belief he'd be taking over a club full of younger players. Instead, they signed Burnett and Byrd, re-signed Ruiz, traded zero veterans. And since this is his first opportunity in the majors, he's hesitant to rock the boat with management.

It is odd that Sandberg was praised during his time in the minors that he was great with the players yet gets up here and is horrible.

The core of the locker room has a reputation as divas and uncoachable so it is not surprising that the coach would butt heads with them.

The Draft Order

Here’s the whole top 10:

1. Arizona Diamondbacks
2. Houston Astros
3. Colorado Rockies
4. Texas Rangers
5. Houston Astros
6. Minnesota Twins
7. Boston Red Sox
8. Chicago White Sox
9. Chicago Cubs
10. Philadelphia Phillies

Astros are at #2 for not signing Brady Aiken and then #5 is their "normal" pick

Rosenthal is floating a little tidbit that the Brewers might be considering firing Ron Roenicke.

Oh.  And you can add Ozzie Guillen to the list of guys who might have an interest in the Twins manager gig.  I REALLY don't see that happening.

Yeah that might be just a BIT of a culture clash there. . .
