Joker is getting a whole mess of social media criticism leading to Todd Phillips now banning press from the world premiere, which he's further getting blasted for since his whole "Sneaking an art movie in the backdoor of a comic movie." approach would theoretically hold up to criticism.

Everyone I know who saw it on the festival circuit says it sucks, fwiw.

I'll probably end up seeing it in theaters due to both my nerd curiousity and my desire for WB to do this kind of art focused approach with other DC properties and creative teams but yeesh this looks like a mess.

Press weren't banned from the world premiere, just red carpet interviews, which are BS anyway. You aren't going to have thoughtful "real" interviews on the red carpet. And they are all just canned, hype promotion anyway.

I was invited to see the film on Tuesday night. So it's not like press have been banned from seeing the film or talking to the actors.

Basically, it looks like Phillips made a social crime drama just under the guise of it being a comic book movie. It looks like it has next to no relations to the comics and lore outside of a few things.

It's not going to be a definitive cinematic take on the Joker. It's going to be a quasi-art film attempt. I'm not sure I want DC Comics movie to massively go in this direction. I hope it's more of a one-off experiment.

A minority.  Even after all the faux outrage and "incel" talk surrounding the film it's still at 77% on RT after 127 reviews and it's average is nearly 8.0.  It's receiving high grades all over the board. Over 30% of the total reviews are perfect scores.   It won the Golden Lion,  it finished 5th at TIFF.

You might not like the film,  shit everyone here might say it sucks, but it wouldn't be accurate to say there's a "mess" here.  It will probably double it's budget at the box office in the first weekend.   Warner Bros. couldn't have asked for a better result.

On the other hand, it's only 50% with Top Critics

Also with an average well over 7.0, 10 critics who liked it gave it near or perfect scores.  But many of the non-U.S. critics aren't counted as "top critics" anyway regardless of their expertise.

I *think* Top Critic status is dictated by amount of readership. I know that's how metacritic chooses critics.

I thought it was based arbitrarily on publication;  there are websites etc. that have way more of a readership/viewership than say the S.F. Chronicle but are not counted as "Top" and *some* of the aforementioned Non-U.S. critics.

The discourse on the Joker on social media is hardly what I'd call intelligent thoughtful discourse, especially the cesspool that is twitter.

Right? So much whining about how people would dare make a crack about their silly comic book movie.

It's pretty much trash across the board, just like with Star Wars, and Game of Thrones.

Twitter is pretty much trash period most of the time. I am enjoying the people yelling at the clouds about "Not my Joker"  because I hate to break it to these people..  there is no Joker origin,   there are versions of what his origin might have been.

You know.. like this movie.

As always, twitter is what you make of it. Much like here and every other place on the internet, the more you are a caretaker of your feed (muting/blocking/ignoring), the more pleasant it is.

@odessasteps is just letting everyone know he has me on ignore. ?

Maybe surprisingly,  I do not. But I do stay out of the Raw thread for a couple days if Sasha did something noteworthy.  ?

Hell in a Cell a week from tonight.  ?

Edit:  Actually that's the day we're going to see Joker so I might have to watch later.

Cesar was a confirmed bachelor ?

I was half wondering if she wasn't barking up the wrong tree when I wrote that. Bet the Tattler-style rags back then had a field day with him. Luckily it appeared he didn't give a fuck but did have plenty of beards on hand according to Wiki

Quote

made frequent appearances at Hollywood events escorting actresses, such as Joan Crawford, Linda Darnell, Barbara Stanwyck, Lucille Ball, Ann Sheridan, Jane Wyman and Ginger Rogers;

He was a registered Republican too which is another beard I suppose

I liked the Birds of Prey trailer and seeing Margot Robbie back as Harley Quinn. More looking forward to Black Widow and Wonder Woman 1984 next year. Will create a thread with a poll for most anticipated 2020 comic book movies like I have in years gone by.
