jaedmc Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 I think Martyrs is better than all those. It's probably my favorite of the French Extreme. I'd probably put in the Top 10 Horror Films of the last 10 years....But that list probably isn't so hot anyway, so big woop.
Jingus Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 I've watched Inside, Frontier(s), and Eden Lake. I come to October Horrordays with my big-kid britches pulled up, tough and ready! Bigger than mine... I ain't seen those movies! God, not enough hours in the day.
Burgundy LaRue Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 I'm not questioning whether Martyrs is better or worse--obviously, I don't know yet. Just pointing out that extreme horror films don't really get to me. Or at least, I can get through them without wanting to set myself on fire. Yet. I am BLR, hear me whimper as I check off my horror watch list!
Curt McGirt Posted August 29, 2014 Author Posted August 29, 2014 Went into one of the VHS boxes last night and picked out a couple things. How's this for random: The Hidden Scars of Dracula The Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy (!) Urotsukidoji - Legend of the Overfiend (!!!) Plus a video with Big Black, Black Flag, and Slayer live videos, Target Video hardcore punk vids, and a bunch of shit recorded off MTV in maybe '97 that my friend did. Got to see No Doubt and Manson videos, heh. I got through some of Aztec Mummy but the rest I'm digging into today. The Hidden is one of those '80s classics that nobody ever talks about. Scars is at the tail end of the Hammer run and thus features far more blood and nudity than usual. Urotsukidoji is the most fucked up anime ever made (at least that I've seen) and I paid $35 for that tape at the local Camelot Music at the mall when I was a kid. Thoughts?

New Blood Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Martyrs is incredible and my favorite of the French horror films of last decade. The boutique label Vinegar Syndrome which releases many forgotten sexploitation, softcore and hardcore XXX and horror films will be releasing Graduation Day on Sept. 9th and Dracula Sucks starring Jamie Gillis in October!

I don't ever follow your line of thought, Jae. You know this. Your ship sails straight and my toy boat is circling the bathtub drain.
jaedmc Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 We're not even two ships passing in the night, we're two ships blindly colliding and killing everyone on board. We're Titanic vs. Hindenburg. Coming to SyFy this Fall.
piranesi Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 I refuse to leave my safe cocoon of sleek 80s synth horror.
jaedmc Posted August 29, 2014 Posted August 29, 2014 Then there was the experimental but ultimately disappointing Maniac remake. The synth score is the best part. You could probably listen to 15 seconds chunks of it on Amazon and get the picture though.
Burgundy LaRue Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 TitanDenburg. Everybody dies! I just want my fair cut of the profits when you sell the movie rights. Moving away from my periodic "Let Me Confuse Jae Again with My Ramblings". . . I thought the Maniac remake was decent. I'm coming from the POV of not having seen the original yet, but I was satisfied enough. It's not great, but it's fine enough.
jaedmc Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I guess if I had to gauge Maniac, decent is a good word. There's some cool stuff in it, and as a regular movie it's really interesting to dissect. However, as a horror movie, with the intent to scare, it does not succeed because of the gimmick. I applaud it for trying something new, and think what it did was ultimately a worth while film, but if you're looking for a "scary movie" you're not really going to get it.
New Blood Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I really dug the Maniac remake and thought that Elijah Wood put in a very good performance. It's more of a remake in name only with only a couple scenes that ties to the original. The original is a top 5 horror flick of the 80s. In my book, Joe Spinell puts in the best performance in horror history in that.
Burgundy LaRue Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 I'm not sure if the movie was trying to scare anyone so much as present this sick person doing terrible things, to see it from his POV. It's reality horror, as I like to call it. The film's biggest problem is how the gore blended in with the glossy, neon art-gallery backdrop, and overuses said motif instead of fully developing Frank's mental breakdown. But Elijah Wood is really good as Frank and the movie does present an interesting premise, though not fully realized.
Jingus Posted August 30, 2014 Posted August 30, 2014 Urotsukidoji is the most fucked up anime ever made (at least that I've seen) and I paid $35 for that tape at the local Camelot Music at the mall when I was a kid. Thoughts?Wow, there's a blast from the past. For those who don't know, the Urotsukidoji/Overfiend series is what basically single-handedly invented the entire tentacle-rape genre in hentai anime. But the weirdest thing is, Legend of the Overfiend is... dare I say it... not a terrible movie? It's an outright horror film, first and foremost, with the porn element cuming in a very distant second. All the sexual assault sequences (and fuck me, but there's a lot of them) are very clearly supposed to be horrific and repellent and just plain wrong, rather than conveying that icky feeling that you're supposed to be jerking off to them (like in most hentai porn that copied this movie). I wouldn't blame anyone who DID find it to be offensively misogynistic, not in a movie containing more rape scenes than your average 1970s Italian exploitation flick. But for me it came off as being appropriately disturbing and heavy, rather than something which seemed to enjoy the molesty content in a popcorn-munching manner.

We're Titanic vs. Hindenburg. Coming to SyFy this Fall. If you're on SyFy and you're going to collide and kill everyone, you're probably not two ships. More like giant prehistoric snake and genetically altered pirahnakeet (half pirahna, half parakeet), Edit: Wait, have they not done Pirahnakeet yet? I want a producer's credit and a bonus tied to viewership, not ad revenue. 2
piranesi Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 I think it's time SyFy branched that theme out a little. Like maybe DinoWayans vs. BaraBaldwins. or CrocObama vs. Boehnerdactyl.

Reed Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 Ultimately, I attribute the lack of African American horror films to AAs having good sense. As Eddie Murphy once put it: once a ghost tells you to get the out the house, get GONE. No investigations, no trying to reason with the ghost. Just pack up the car and peel out. Some whites try to figure what's going on, learn the truth and what not. Eff that, some evil spirit has called dibs on the house. Whites stick around. Blacks say let Casper have it. The same holds true for wild animals beating up folks. Never seen Bambi or Yogi slap-box a black person, have you? And you probably won't. Paranormal Activity 5: The Marked Ones dealt with the whole "minorities are too smart to stick around for that shit" idea pretty well. Unlike the other white suburban protagonists, the two boys in it weren't actively looking for trouble. It literally found them and it's made clear they were screwed regardless. Also, when the shit went down the first thing they did was bring in armed gang members to fight the coven and blow those witches away. Hence why I liked them more than any characters that franchise has had so far. Nice to see some horror protagonists with common sense for once.
Brian Fowler Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 In the interest of being pedantic, that's not PA 5, it's a spin-off. PA 5 was actually written before The Marked Ones, and temporarily shelved. It's currently scheduled for 2016, although god knows why they are waiting so long.
Reed Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 Regardless, I hope we see Hector again. Without giving too much away, his fate was kind of ambiguous. I think he could come back. It was one of the few times I've really liked a lead in a horror movie. "Go down there and investigate? What? Are we Sherlock Holmes now?"
piranesi Posted August 31, 2014 Posted August 31, 2014 T.J. MAXXX, BABIES! I'm a sucker for skeleton couples...but we don't always need to be so heteronormative, COME ON NOVELTY COMPANIES!!! Kind of digging the "Tombstone of Dorian Gray" thing though. Here's the staging sheet for one shelf set of my local Big Lots: NOT ALL STORES WILL RECEIVE ALL ARTICLES is the Halloween novelty equivalent of "Card subject to change" Also, way too much empty space. The bottom part should be crammed with eyeball bowls and little spider rings and erasers shaped like brains.
Burgundy LaRue Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 I'll be hitting my local Dollar Tree. Their seasonal merchandise is always on point and for $15, your house will look like a haunted mansion.
piranesi Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 They usually have great little tombstone paperweights. Heavy and well made for a dollar and lots of varieties if you want a little mini-graveyard on your dresser.
